AKL and beyond for a week

markis10, considering that in Flashware's first post he commented:

I'm looking at a trip to AKL (AA redemption, 35k miles for J return from PER)

I'd say that most therefore wouldn't have mentioned the LAN J fares, lest they be accused of not reading the OP. All of his comments are also singular, not plural; thus the knowledge about karens joining him was only relayed later in the thread.

Although I don't know karens [yet:D], I'll take anat0l's comment as truth.

Plus, your quote is AKL/SYD/AKL (which shows the cheaper pricing ex-AKL). To be fair, one had to get to AKL first (thus buying 3 sectors - SYD/AKL then AKL/SYD/AKL as you quoted), so unless they were looking to go back to AKL in the next 12 months, I'd say that the LAN option is dead in the water. That may be less likely if karens moves to PER.

Have to say its sad to see 6 pages of a thread on a frequent flyer board about what to do in Auckland for a PS status pax, when there has not been one mention of a LAN run:

What IS going on :)

I have QP life, thus no need for getting to SG. I don't care about OW lounges (e.g. CX), so am happy with what I'm doing. karens is taking the LAN flights already, it will help her requalify PS. She also has QP, so again moot point really. :)

AKL/SYS/AKL

Quite a mileage run you would have if you flew between Auckland Airport and Yeosu Airport in South Korea (but good luck finding a oneworld route to get there, much less a non-stop one!)

I think you missed my point, regardless of the personal details of the OP, the question was what to do in AKL, I was just suggesting a day trip to Sydney with LAN would have been a possibility to most on this board, not exactly a tourist activity that would be endorsed by NZ Tourism however if you are already in AKL and needed the SCs if would be on the list of some :p, especially if solo. Partners complicate things, more often than not in a nice way!

Its not often you find yourself in a position to do a SC run if your PER based without some expense in $$$ or time, I can understand why you would be content with QP, myself I am shooting for LTG in 24 months so where possible I try and maximise opportunties while minimising SWMBO angst.

aaahhh now I understand your point markis10, nesting an SC run - not something I had considered, as if I was the OP, having just flown PER/BNE/AKL, the last thing I would want to do is do AKL/SYD/AKL run, using the OMG:shock: flight (on any day of my holiday).

Yes, your point of partners does muddy the water sometimes, depending on their level of engagement in the FF process. Thankfully (for Flashware) I think karens would be a somewhat forgiving partner if he wanted to do it...which thankfully he doesn't. More brownie points to him for going on a holiday...for a holiday's sake:lol:

I might add that the Bay of Islands is worth the drive for a couple of days away, Paihia is a nice locale.

Has anyone caught the train from Auckland to Wellington? I've suggested it as an idea for the holiday but it takes 12 hours. Then we rent a car and over the next week drive back to Auckland. The up side would be having dinner in Wellington at Logan Brown. Plus I think the train would be fun.

Thanks for the link Mal. Sounds like I will be able to have a fairly decent knitting session on board :D Although after 12 hours of me knitting I think Flashware might look like this  or  or .

You could teach Flashware to knit and get twice as much done...:lol:

Ha ha sometimes he is!

I want to book my flights but my passport is at home and I will be away till at least Wednesday. Do I book it typing in any old random number then when I get to my passport can I update it? Or do I wait till I'm home then book the flight:?:

Who are you booking with...I know QF does not require this info so I guess it's not a showstopper to leave it out? Worth a try.

Just an update.... have booked 1 night in Auckland at the start, and end of the trip with my $99 Hilton room. So that's 2 nights, for $99 AUD each.

Catching the train to Wellington.

Using the Accor sale, we've booked 2 nights in Wellington so we can experience Logan Brown ; $99 NZD for the 2 nights! So cheap! That's about $5 AUD :lol:

Due to the savings there, we've spoilt ourselves with a nice lake/mountain view room at the Lake Taupo Hilton for 2 nights also. Other stops/accommodation still to be determined, but it's looking pretty solid now.

Looking forward to getting away! (don't we all..!)

Oh, and our final night is at the Ventura Inn due to the OMG O'Clock start for both of us!

Enjoy Lake Taupo! I have no idea when I'll go to Taupo; perhaps when the next "Real New Zealand" Do is in Taupo (although the bias is still Waimarama for obvious reasons)).

Oh yes indeed :D

Very good. Surely beats sleeping at AKL. :)

With our HPC 20% off, and the NZ Peso being so weak ; it's still only around $175 AUD/night!
