Anybody else experience this? Or know what the story is?
Mrs. TonyD and 3 yo arrived at SYD DOM. on Monday at 6.25am for QF506 to BNE at 7.35. with bags and no prior op to do an OLCI.
Fronting the QC queue, she and all around her were told " we dont issue boarding passes anymore - you will need to get one from the kiosk". I asked if she was in the bag drop queue? - negative!
There was an enormous queue of people in the QC lounge also trying to change seats, both with OLCI passes and reg. boarding passes.?? she didnt bother!!
At the counter they confirmed what the kiosk showed, that there were no other seats available, and the seat she had way down the back was all there was, as nearly everbody had checked in. Is OLCI that popular, that an hour before flight - that Check In was complete??? She is a NB+QC
To add to all this there were 20+ free seats multiple seats forward of her.
Aahh but its school holidays and she had 3yo with her!

have had a few funny looks when i have OLCI'd but not been able to print BP. the quickchecks won't issue you one, so you line up and then the check-in agent seems to think it the strangest thing in the world that you don't have access to a printer everywhere you go....

in general tho, yes they do want you to either OLCI or Quickcheck before hitting the desk. this is noticeable by the decreasing number of checkin desks as opposed to bagdrop desks. for QP and Business they usually seem ok about it tho...

as for the empty seats, there could be a number of reasons for that.

And what happens if you're not allowed to do an OLCI? For example if you're travelling on a domestic flight to an international flight e.g. (CBR-MEL-NRT) you're not allowed to do an OLCI so you must front up to the desk.

I don't tend to have access to printers when I am on the homeward bound journey so usually check in online then front up at the bag drop with my Gold FF card and say I need a boarding pass. They have never had a problem with that for me.

AFAIK, SYD/MEL/BNE have a separate domestic checkin for international connections.

I used the one at MEL domestic in June when I was travelling MEL-SYD-HNL ...

Last week I went to use my new gold FF card to check in, and found it wouldn't read in the 3 kiosks I tried at SYD

It was a little before 0530, checking in for 401 to MEL, but departures was pretty empty, so I rocked up to the nearest open checkin/bag drop and told the 'lovely young lady' on the other side that my new card wouldn't read, and could she give me a boarding pass?

Apparently, it's a very difficult thing to do, as she suggested that I try other kiosks (after all, there are more than 3, and they can't all be having problems?, and she could see my booking), or maybe next time try OLCI?

She did issue me with a boarding pass, though
Not sure if it was intentional or not, but I had a window at the back (2nd last row), which I have never had on that flight before, and my boarding pass showed I was 106 to check in on a 767

Next time I tried my card, in MEL, it read no problems, and has done so in SYD twice more since

But I find that SYD QF are not particularly pleasant most of the time
I much prefer MEL or CBR, with CBR streets ahead, in both attitude and their customer service ethic, but then they're QANTAS Link, aren't they?

Thanks Dave, must make sure I locate it before I fly internationally. :) Mostly just one day trips so rarely ever bother the check out staff. On the rare occasions I do though I agree with YankeeZephyr, they are very friendly and professional.

I have never been turned away from the checkin counter and asked to go and use the Quickcheck machines.

I have also used OLCI from home in the past but am unable to print out a boarding pass as I do not have a printer connected to my laptop.
