Re: Air Australia goes under

Geez - that dance of the princess only lasted months, not even a year!

Interesting of course that KordaMetha are the administrators - an Ansett relic. Then again, one of the key bearers in Air Australia was also formerly at Ansett.

Hope all those stranded customers manage to get home. "Rescue plans" by airlines have already started to be thrown up.

While I sympathise with those affected the headlines this morning that thousands (?) of people are 'stranded' overseas seems a little over the top. Yes it might be more difficult to get home, yes it may cost you a bit more and yes you might miss a few days of work but its not like they made an emergency landing in Baghdad and now cannot leave. These are popular commercial tourist destinations serviced by multiple carriers. There is an obvious risk when choosing a discount ticket on a small, new airline 'no one has ever heard of' that something might go wrong. That's the risk you take when choosing AA over someone like SQ or MH who you are unlikely to have problems with.

Those people demanding to be 'rescued' from such far flung destination as coughet should just calm down, check their travel insurance, head back to their hotel and have a Mai Tai by the pool. So you have to spend a few more days at the beach. You'll get home. The Australian government will not drop what it is doing to 'rescue' you because your 14 days holiday may not fit perfectly into your 2 weeks of annual leave.

Reading this thread of relatively well informed people and, to use your terminology, there appears to be quite a few Blind Freddie's around who did not see it coming :!:

I certainly knew it was a risk when booking. In the thread where i mentioned my selection i even commented about travel insurance... All up very frustrating for me, its been a mixed up morning. Still haven't contacted insurers or my bank.

100 000's of thousand people stranded.

Wow that sounds like a media beat up.

Simply not possible based on the number of planes and routes...

I think you mean 100000, which is possible given they have daily capacity of 2-4000, and were selling tickets for a year into the future.

But actively stranded today can't be that many people.

'Stranded' as in people with worthless tickets is a bit of a stretch of the meaning of the word. I'd say someone who is in the pickle of getting home is in a more dire need of resolution than someone who has to deal with a worthless ticket. (Not trying to trivialise the affairs of either kind of person).

News.com.au is saying
More than 4000 domestic and international travellers will be affected, included Australians stuck in coughet, Thailand.

and the SMH is saying
the now-failed airline has sold about 100,000 tickets for future flights that are unlikely to ever take off

Charge back logged. Once the bank heard the vendor name, she knew the story. The bank hasn't determined how they are handling this, but at the moment its a chargeback for services not provided. Many calls today according to the staffer.

I'm sure they will have something on offer. But remember Air Australia did help out Qantas customers last year, so i guess they feel obliged to act quickly to help out??

News.com.au reports VA has already made announcements to assist stranded pax in Bali

According to KordaMentha the airline is up for sale - perhaps this is an opportunity for VA to get their hands on some fire-sale cheap A330s? Also the unused traffic rights into China might snare someone's interest also...

If they couldn't pay for fuel it's probably a fair bet that they haven't made the lease payments lately either so we may see
the guys from "Airline Repo' turn up to get them.

I thought there was a story (possibly urban legend) before that an airline didn't have enough money to pay for the fuel so that a plane could take off, then the captain went around the cabin looking for "donations" so that they could pay the fuel bill.

Of course, little comfort and a nonsensical suggestion in this case.

Can't believe no one has suggested Air Australia send Mel Gibson and Robert D Jr in to save the pax stranded deep in the jungles of Thailand, Bali and Hawaii.

Mavrick is being a Goose. Those sorts of rescue missions would only be attempted if the airline was Air America - not Air Australia. We'll be sending Capts Bruce & Bruce.
