THE long-haul arm of the Malaysian low-cost airline AirAsia is set to announce it plans to fly to the Gold Coast, posing the first serious challenge to the Qantas offshoot Jetstar's international arm.

After several delays in unveiling its plans for the Australian market, AirAsia's chief executive, Azran Osman-Rani, is due to fly into the Gold Coast today to detail fares and the launch date.

All I get is "Sorry, there are no fares available on this date". I have tried many dates after November 2nd, and none of them appear to have any availability.

Anyone know what is happening? Are they waiting for operating certificate? Has anyone been successful?

The sale is supposed to start tomorrow. :)

Was I a bit premature in my excitement? I will try again tomorrow....

I wonder if this means they'll come online at midnight EST, or midnight KUL time (ie 2am here).

Seems AirAsia have followed Jetstar's "sale" approach. I sat at the comp hitting refresh until the fares loaded, at exactly 2am they did... and all the cheap fares were already gone. 1000 seats sold in the space of 5-10 seconds

Were there really any seats in the first place? I would like to hear from someone who got them because i was continually refreshing when they appeared

The sale period is for 2-14 November and there are still some cheap airfares available.

If you can manage to get promotional airfares OOL-KUL return for early next year then be prepared to pay ~A$640, and then extra for checked baggage (estimated at 20kgs), meal and comfort kit. All up ~A$750. Normal airfares appear to be ~A$200+ more. I guess it is OK if all you wanted to do was travel OOL-KUL direct. Forget it if your origin is anywhere other than OOL and your destination is not KUL.

So much for competition. Cheap marketing stunt and by the looks of the airfares they will not be getting any of my business for long haul travel.

It does give a good option for people living in KUL to get to OOL (although it would not be my chocie of destination, it is a popular one).

I am not sure where things are at at the moment, but MH used to account for all the seats a Malaysia based airline could provide to BNE/MEL/SYD/PER, which would stop Air Asia flying to those destinations. Hence why the tend to talk about flying to OOL and ADL.

I saw one fare from KUL-OOL for $1+ taxes ($100 all up) on the 12th November.

So the cheapest return fare I saw was $406.00 OOL-KUL ($179++ OOL-KUL, $1+++ KUL-OOL). Pretty good really, but not a super special.

i wonder if they will ever be audited to see if they really sold any seats for that amount (i.e. AUD99 inclusive of all taxes and surcharges)

In malaysia they'd get away with anything, but i would imagine it would be harder to be deceptive about these things here.

Anyone?

ARBITRAGE, and LONGER INDIRECT ROUTES MAY BE CHEAPER

I am pleased they started to put an end to Jeststars games of having more expensive tickets on the way in! ie 350 out, 650 return leg.
Also note Air Asia (D7) is about the same as TIGER for the inconveance factor.
The greenies will hate Virgins add on OLL-MEL->CBR for $140 - I can foresee lots of OOL antics, because of national infrastructure coughups.

1) I was looking for a cheap ticket from SGN to SYD on the 18th Jan.
looked, but could not find a reverse fare for under AUD$750. Tiger nearly got my money, but I may try out D7, but will have to pay for connecting jaws.
2) National Carriers MH VN and SG LOOSE business, because their deals are lousy.
3) As a genuine Tourist, ML looses my travel bucks most of the time, because SG and Thai airlines undercut them, and steal tourist nites. The OOL offering will still miss 2/3rds of potential market - it is a good start.
4) In theory, this should kill jetstigs lame website (ie $900 one way from Thailand - are there that many stupid punters?
I think D7's prices are OK, but if domestic connecting OOL prices go up/get manipulated, then that is a big business model threat for D7.
PS: Corrected some codes - but also noticed D7 has a NASTY high commission exchange rate - they should be honest about it, which will earn loyalty.

ethernet,

You probably should refer to Air Asia using it's correct code as 'AA' is the code for Americian Airlines :!:

Air Asia X's IATA code is D7.
The other branches of Air Asia all come with their own codes (AK for Air Asia Malaysia, FD for Thai Air Asia, no idea what's the code for Indonesia Air Asia...)

And by SG I presume the reference was made to Singapore Airlines/SQ, not SpiceJet.

ahhh.......so the "AA" mentioned refers to AirAsia as opposed to American Airlines.

Makes more sense now.
