Venue: Via Napoli (Surrey Hills) (so people are fairly close to transport to get home)

Time: Lunchtime (and the afternoon) [but shout me down if this doesn't work for you - the consensus will win]

Date: Wednesday 6 January 2016

Theme: [Italian Wines] [Pinot Noirs under $40] [Other?] (yet to be agreed)

Might have to make it the Thursday - it looks like they only open for lunch Thurs-Sun.

Keeping with the Italian theme, can I suggest that we also add in a prosecco? I've got some beautiful little gem's form the King Valley... (NOT brown brothers!!)

I could be convinced to join in on Jan 6. Lunch is definitely a good idea. It's a bit of a trek, but I'm sure the inter-city train would get me there and back safely. No FF points for that sadly.

However I don't currently have any decent Pinot, but I could easily find a mediocre bottle or two.

I am thinking most of you think the Pinot Noir is too hard, so maybe we get more creative.

What do the would-be-attendees think of either:

a. swapping variety to something easier - say Cab Sauv; or

b. dropping variety and switching to region, say the Hunter or Margaret River; or

c. going for something like: cool climate wines - red or white.

I'm happy with the Pinot challenge, I'm sure I can find something suitable. I always enjoy tasting new Pinot's, even mediocre ones. But if others fancy switching to some other arrangement I'm also cool with that.

Dear Sydney AFF Wine Lovers and Beefarmer (and any other AFFs in Sydney on 7 January 2016)


I have found a spare 20 minutes to do some more homework on the Sydney AFF Wine Lovers January Meet-Up, and have narrowed down the options to the following two venues:


Option 1 - the Relaxed Budget Italian


Venue: Bar Reggio

Why: It is consistently rated good for groups. It does cheap BYO. It has outside seating if the weather is good. It does an all you can eat Italian buffet for $29 a head with corkage at $1.50 per person (not sure if per bottle too, but it's cheap corkage anyway). It's in Darlinghurst, and a short walk to Museum Station or a 10 minute walk to Town Hall Station.

Option 2 - the Posh Harbour Dining Experience (almost private function)

Venue: Ripples (at Milsons Point)

Why: It's the Harbour experience, which always makes for a special back drop and enriches the ocassion. It's fairly posh (modern Aussie food), but not exorbitantly priced for a Harbourside Sydney restaurant. It does $12 per bottle corkage. It's a short walk to Milsons Point train station or a quick ferry trip from the CBD. There are some great bars up the road in Kirribilli if the mood takes us. As a group booking they would want to host us between 2:30pm and 5pm outside their normal lunch dining time so they can better cater for us. And here is the view!!:




The rules for selection of venue: The majority of votes by those that respond before this Sunday (1 November) and intend to go will have the deciding vote.


Ps: I had to disregard Via Napoli in the end because it would require a taxi or bus ride from the CBD to get there, and there are too many people who would like to go that really need to be near a quick and easy exit home.

I am interested, but fairly venue agnostic. The two/three suggestions are fine by me. I am happy to take a short taxi / uber or use PT to get there.

Is the date locked in? If so, I shall start to investigate flights / accom. It could be a good use of that pesky AmEx "free flight" given proximity to NYE.

Very indecisive but both (all 3) venues work for me. I think food matching wise Bar Reggio may be easier (most of us know what food we will likely order) and can bring wine to suit. It also has a fairly relaxed courtyard that could work, but it does not have the view obviously.

Not sure if we have finalised wine choice/preference but my preference would be to keep it simple and say bring your fav wine under $x (that is not a Fo purchase) this way we get to try some wines that fellow aficionados have pressure tested and also means a bit of variety, although if there are more than 6 of us the serves will be small but I am sure there will be enough to make comment.

Having said all that I am very laid back and will go with the majority.

Given the likely weather in January, I will probably opt for something lighter in style. A knock your socks off big red might be a bit much in 30-40 degrees.

I have a slight leaning towards the Italian too, and am not fussed about the view. But we do have some folk who are travelling up, so I thought it appropriate to have a Harbour view option.

In terms of wine theme, I like your suggestion. Once we lock in the venue, we can deliberate on the wine theme.

I'm leaning towards Bar Reggio as it's easier for me to get to. I don't think view will matter much as we'll be too busy talking about the good wine and distracted by the good company.
