AFF Wine Lovers Meet-Up 6 Jan 2016 in Sydney

Also, separately - there is some interest for running the blind wine tasting event in Melbourne next. As Sydney is my stomping ground, is there a volunteer amongst us who could help me set this up? I am after a Melbournian who can source and book the venue and act as the point of contact on the ground in the lead up to the event. Hopefully I can make it, but never know with my work or with family commitments. I will be happy to do the rest

[And mods - please can we get this thread title changed back to a more generic one? It will be nice to build up a thread of all the wine themed meet-ups. But put me back in line if this is not the AFF done thing.]

Generally speaking a new thread is created for each event, to make it easy for latecomers to get the key information (often updated in the thread), but that doesn't *have* to be the case.

I'll just leave this here...

Great pic - what a young crowd - don't know if I would fit in :p :p

It's back again folks. Auction closes tomorrow evening. The starting price is a little higher this time round, but still currently less than $40 a bottle.

Merlot 2006 Auction (0045-2436196) | GraysWine Australia

I would be in for 2 or 3 again this time up to $45 total inc. if anyone was interested in sharing - and can bid, I don't have an account with Greys. I see it comes up on Sterling Auctions also - has anyone had dealings with them?

Grand Irvine 2006 at Langtons right now - $35/bottle

Thanks AC, I have successfully bid on a few bottles from Langton's over the last week that are due to be sent - as I am paying delivery for 12 I think I will grab a couple.

Delectable Blue, (or anyone else) any comments positive or negative between the 2004, 2006 and 2008 vintages

I tried a 2006 recently and was quite disappointed in it. It was cloyingly sweet, without a lot of the complexity I am used to in the wine. I'm hoping it was just a dud bottle. I'll try and find my tasting notes a little later when I have some free time.

I haven't had the opportunity to taste the 2004, but absolutely loved the 2008.

Thanks AC, I was just getting around to that. Here are the details for those that are just browsing through this forum:

A disappointing 79 from me. The James Irvine Grand Merlot is one of my all-time favourite wines, but this is not a typical example from my experience. There was a cloying sweetness to the palate, with a strong prune flavour, that overpowers and unbalances the wine. The wine was also missing the complex core that I remember it for. There were some fine tannins evident, which were well integrated after a 3 hour decant. Tastes like it still needs another 3-5 years.
