AFF Sydney Wine Meet Ups

For a minute I thought I stumbled onto the wrong thread.
Bottles that actually still have wine in them :shock:

Its not even April 1

Has to have been photoshopped....

Despite the time of year, it was a very "well behaved" lunch, focused more on the tasting and discussion, rather than guzzling.

Most of the group had to return to nearby workplaces.

It really was true - everyone was restrained as most were returning to finish work, I was the lucky one to just hop in a train from St James station straight out to the airport and secure a Fly Ahead on the 4pm BNE service (last seat available in J).

Thanks to Katy, Wozza and Anonymous Coward for the welcome after meeting them for the first time (plus those for whom I know their real name but not their screen names unless I missed seeing them post).

Separate thanks to penegal for walking me to the event, it certainly was easy to find.

Not sure about a kitchen that can't even take avocado off a burger though...that was certainly a weird experience.

Classic... I asked for no beetroot and they said cannot do special orders. So it came with beetroot and I slid it straight off...

I am certain it would be easier to just not put it on..

Anyway, great lunch and time well spent

I'm pretty sure I could make a lamb salad without lamb (just skip the step where you add lamb!)

I stumbled upon One Penny Road restaurant at Summer Hill recently who does 'Raid Your Cellar' nights on the last Tuesday of each month, free corkage with their tailored 4 course menu at $80/pp. Could be potential venue for a future meetup though location may be inconvenient for most SYD based AFFers.

Dates for 2017:
28th February
28th March
25th April
30th May
27th June
25th July
29th August
26th September
31st October
28th November

They also have Wine Club Mondays. According to their site: --

These evenings are an opportunity to explore, discuss and taste wines from around the world in an educational yet social environment. The evenings will have exclusive use of the restaurant and be conducted by sommelier David Murphy with the occasional wine industry expert assisting in walking you through the tasting. Educational material, bread, cheese and a topic matching main dish will be served during the evening.

Tickets are great value at just $90 per person with the tasting to start promptly at 6pm and finishing by 9ish. Classes are limited to 24 persons.

The tasting topics and dates for 2017 are as follows:

Monday 13th February 2017: The Summer of Riesling
Monday 13th March 2017: The majestic world of Chenin Blanc
Monday 10th April 2017: Road trip Austria
Monday 8th May 2017: Mornington vs Yarra Valley Pinot Noir
Monday 5th June 2017: Canberra & the Hilltops Hoods
Monday 10th July 2017: An Evening With ...
Monday 14th August 2017: Margaret River Cabernet V the World ($200pp)
Monday 11th September 2017: Wines of the Languedoc – Roussillon
Monday 9th October 2017: Vintage 2013 Retrospective ($100pp)
Monday 13th November 2017: The mystique of the Jura ($150pp) maximum 16 guest

Not for me - it's just over a block from where I live :) I also know the owners (David and Nina)

The regular "Raid Your Cellar" has them pick 4 items from their regular menu that they think will complement your choosen bottle of wine, however if we book in advance we may be able to get them to do something a bit different to line up with whatever theme we have for the night.

The wine list at One Penny Red's quite decent, with a good selection of international options and a few things "off piste" so to speak.

Sounds like a great idea Viridianne.

I am quite happy to go "off piste", both in terms of wine and location.

As a Summer Hill local, I would be very keen for a One Penny Red, raid the cellar night. Great food there. I've done it previously, and found the portions sizes a little miserly on these nights in comparison to their regular menu.

Anyone else going to GAUCHITO GIL'S Malbec Day (Sydney one)? I'll be going with a few other friends.
Gauchito Gil's – Malbec World Day – Bring me Malbec

Early bird tickets are $50 and they go up $10 after the 1st of March.

Hey DrSammyLee, thanks for this. I was planning a tasting event that weekend, but I'm quite keen on exploring more Malbec, so I might see of I can re-schedule and join you if you're going.

Cheers,
DB

Thanks - DrSammyLee. Same deal for the Melbourne one by the looks of it.

I've been informed that I should actually be following this thread. Hello :)

Did you end up rescheduling DB? I'll definitely be there with a few other friends.

I also have a ticket available if anyone is still looking. A friend couldn't arrange for a babysitter so had to give up her ticket. Happy to sell cheaper ($40 instead of $50).

I must admit, I've totally messed up the dates for this event. For some reason I had it in my head that this was on the 29th. I am unable to make that date, as I'm having a farewell party before I depart to relocate to Tasmania. However I am free this Saturday, so I'd love to take you up on the offer. I'm happy to pay the full price of the ticket, there's no need to discount it.

Cheers,
DB

Excellent! I'll hold the ticket for you and meet 1 pm at Carriage Works, Eveleigh (note the location is not at the cell block theatre anymore!)

I'm planning a SYD trip (was going to be 11 May to attend an AGM + see clients), but it's now changing to late May or early June. Another lunch time soiree with good wines and AFf friends....

Keep us updated on the dates. I'm interested but I'll be in Melbourne for the last weekend of May.

I saw some of those reprobates this week QF WP.

They are up to their usual tricks.
