He was a member of a 'closed' facebook group and being a member had unfettered access to content posted within the group. He splashed another members private details in the public domain.

No I do get it. All I was pointing out was that if you are using a social platform and in this case FB then the closed/private group and its members can still be at risk to any individual within that group. Which means if you post private information on FB even in a closed group you are exposing yourself for it to go to the public forum which has obviously happend as you have stated.

The specific FB group in question all members are vetted. To gain access you pretty much need to personally know an admin or a long time member in real life. Think of it more as a large group of traveling friends than the traditional FB group. In his case he was admitted because he was trusted and he ruined that trust.

Yes an old Professor of mine recently made a comment about social media. An oldie but a goody. in this day an age of technology "don't say, do or post anything that you are not prepared to see on the front page of the paper tomorrow".

A forum could be counted as social media. Think your forum handle hides who you are? Think again...

Whilst a handle is perhaps better than using your full name and address as a username, it's very possible to track down a person by a handle on a website alone if someone is so inclined. We "leak" enormous amount of information out on to the web, and whilst thinking that "big brother" is always watching might be an overreach, a person whom is targeting someone for some reason isn't as out there.

You really do need to look at the context of what I posted. This was not data mining by some insidious backdoor software (i.e. Facebook, Google), it was publication of others personal information for self gain.

The information was made readily in a group setting to members of that group in a social context.

Not to mention, he refused to take the post down or even apologise when it was pointed out he had breached the trust of the group.

It was a 'closed' group of which he was a member. After that effort Steven Hui was dememberfied.
