That was one of the other things we have traditionally steered clear of. No alternate drop, and so far no buffet.

I believe there are restaurants out there that can handle groups and don't impose ridiculous conditions on spend or impose strange menus. If the past is anything to go by, AFFers tend to prefer to choose their meals and dislike buffets. I will certainly be looking to avoid, sorry. Regardless of the quality.

While my aversion to,buffet is well known by those who know me, large gatherings like this lend themselves to a buffet style dinner as it
1. Means you pay a fixed price for food (no argument about who had what at bill split time)
2. Drinks are your own responsibility.
3. You can mingle (swap seats) a little more easily without confusing wait staff.
All that said, I’m Penegal Copper for this , I don’t do dining tables of more than 8 people anymore, and the noise is too much for me bear. Also my arthritis has made me less mobile these days

Accommodation found. Decided to head out of the city a bit, so a hotel at Green Square. Considering the cost is a third the cost of the CBD, there is spare $ for cabs!

If you are at the Veriu you are 120 m from Green Square (railway) station and with trains to the city (1 stop to Central and two more to Circular Quay) running every 10 minutes or so during the day, an Opal card would be the way to go and cost far less then Sydney's taxis (or even Uber).

We paid this morning.
Yes that Veriyu Hotel should have ironed out the opening bugs by the time straitman gets there. It is a part of an urban renewal for the area so I will be interested in how it gets finished. Building there was what I would call a Level 10 difficulty.
The train station at Green Square is lovely and modern and the old warehouses and factories are being replaced.
I think $126 is pretty good for Sydney.

Yep at the Veriu. We chose it as it was so close to the train station. And I will have Opal card firmly in hand! :)

Thank you straitman as I own a chunk of that. Next one is the rebadged Novotel Sydney Airport that has had a substantial renovation to all of the rooms finishing May this year. This was the old Hilton which has double glazed windows that I used to use back in the eighties. If Lorraine is still there as the manager she is a fantastic asset for the Accor chain.
Veriyu Green Square has the Green Square train station right across the road so access to everything is excellent and this hotel should open late August.
So we are looking good for an upgrade then?

I haven’t had a meeting with the folks running this one straitman. I have only been there with a hard hat on a couple of times. Negotiate by all means.....for a great room....It was about 4 months ago that we toured this one and the Novotel Sydney Airport.

This sounds fabulous but I think this year we might have to pass. We are hopeful of a house sale and settlement on this weekend and have so much on in so many ways. If there’s space when we are a little clearer as to what’s up we might try and get in. So copper at this stage but could change.

I’d like to do just the HARS Excursion at this stage. Is that poor form if I’m not attending anything else?

So how about mate's rates? ;)

I saw this property on Qantas hotels;

ValueSuites Green Square

It was offering 2024 points for 2 nights.

I want my Hilton points but at double the price not so sure.

Also paid for a few events, not the Opera House tour.

I have a free night from IHG by upgrading my status with them. I don’t go and stay at hotels very often other than overnighting at Crowne Plaza Changi when we are enroute to the US or UK.
I will ask about Novotel Sydney Airport to see if there is a mates rate there.

Registered and paid for Fri drinks and Sat dinner.
Staying at my usual H-SYD. Flights TBA, probably arriving earlier in the week.

Similar accommodation found for my one night. At $126 vs $400+ it's a no brainer. Veriu Green Square.

Strange.

Same property and detail but roughly double the price through Qantas Hotels as through bookings.com

A serious dilemma has been brought to my attention...

19 Oct is quarter finals night at Rugby World Cup.

What chance the restauranteur is a rugby fan and has a big screen I wonder...;)
