AFF - are we our own self-moderating enemy?

Are you sure about that? Every regular, commercially available fare on SQ can be credited to both KrisFlyer and Velocity, provided not operated by Scoot or partially paid with KF mile. The cheaper - Economy Lite fares - will not earn any miles in other star alliance programs though. Group fares I don't think are eligible for any program earning, and the rare as hens teeth L class fares - only earn 10% in Velocity (and nothing on KF??), and discount economy status credits.

For example, I randomly selected some dates, SYD-BKK return, and that came up with a Economy Lite fare that books into K class - costing $790 return, and will earn @ 50% miles if travelling on SQ code, and 90 status credits.
I thought some of these fares didn't earn on VA.

Airfares have come down a little now only 2 weeks from travel. Economy Lite $863 earning 50% KrisFlyer miles and Economy Standard $1068 earning 75% KrisFlyer miles.

Assuming airfares are equal why would one choose SQ over Qantas? Looks like bonus velocity points do apply to VA Gold and also additional baggage allowance to cover golf clubs. Better inflight service? No. Better schedules? Possibly if this was a factor. Better lounges? Not as a VA Gold.

The strong selling point would be family pooling to maintain VA Gold easier and fly JQ more often.

Why would one choose SQ over Qantas? Or Why would you choose SQ over Qantas? Two different questions really. Many of us do appreciate the SQ service in economy, especially if we don't drink diet coke. ;)

BTW, status bonus velocity points only apply if flying on VA and EY, for other partners you need to be on the VA code (and not the operator - in this case SQ - code).

A very rich friend who is retired travels Scoot to/from Thailand and swears by it. They leave their clothes and golf bag in the condo in Pattaya and travel carry on only on cheap airfares. To each their own.

(sigh) I've heard about the golf in Thailand - the fairways are impeccable and the greens are like carpet......mmmmm

And FWIW, I don't subscribe to AFF so I can get a response from an airline when something goes wrong. I come here to share the joy/frustration of stuff that happens, with people I consider great friends and comrades.

I see facebook as nothing more than a platform for anonymous people to air their aviation grievance in full public view - in anticipation of some magical outcome. Or, more hysterically - that the airline will upgrade them due to their saccharine, schmaltzy post.

At least here, I can vent or brag and know that nearly every other person reading my words has a qualified sympathetic or counter view - because they too, either love flying, or fly often enough to have an informed opinion. Whether I fly Y or J or F - we all celebrate it. And that is something really special to me.

Self-moderating it may be. It's cathartic and antagonising all at the same time. At least it's never boring!

Not quite but close. Greens are treacherous. I had 43 putts earlier this year with 7 x 3-putts. Entire handicap used up on the putting green. ;)

@dajop this is the thing. I don't find the SQ service that great. Or the CX service for that matter. But I have tried both quite a few times and I've had countless economy flights and I don't fly Qantas for the hell of it.

But people here criticise my decision based on their own experiences not mine.

Basically, it's up to you, whatever floats your boat. And others shouldn't criticise you for it.

But I do sometimes wonder if we gravitate to the familiar. I fly other carriers too, but when I get back to SQ, I like knowing how it works, how the crew works, what to expect. The familiar works for me (at least to the point where I've watch everything that I'm interested in on the IFE). I will say I have flown med-long haul economy this year on QF, SQ, EK and CA. Have a guess which one - and only one - of those I am not keen to repeat? (to be strictly accurate I have also flown on TR, but for $160 one way including bags+meals, for 7 hour flight, I'm not going to count them).

@JohnK my response is meant to be light hearted so is the handicap 43 (can you have one this high these days), 21, or between 3-21. I to have used up my handicap on greens before. ;) :)

And just like that. The magic of AFF with its enchanting and charismatic members (me included), lubricates a once-frosty thread about self moderation.....only to morph into golf speak.

The Defence rests.

The R may be lame as the factory delivered it, but the aftermarket can wake it up way more effectively than any flavour of GTI.

clipped_wings, I also love when a thread morphs. In this case despite my hatred of golf. In the spirit of argument, I would, as the OP, challenge you on the description of a "once-frosty" thread. But I feel I cannot as your identification of the real nature of us members, "enchanting and charismatic", is just so undeniable that I feel I have no footing. :)

My weekend discovery was that Golfs come in wagons. I had no idea.

Ah, but if you capitalise the g in golf, it moves from the ruination of a pleasant walk to a lovely little automotive appliance … available in wagon form! :)

Good point. Yes, frosty was too harsh. I should have said "spirited" or "engaging".

LOL, I only just got the metaphor! Looks like I need to get out more. Blame it on the school holidays...….

And as far as the assertion by Serfty that QF is the worst Y product, that is just one of the most outright ludicrous statements going around. Having travelled on somewhere between 16-18 airlines on all continents...
I think he meant to say "one of the worst in the free world."
