Only found this thread in the past few weeks. :p
Since then tried glenlivet 18yo, glenfiddich 18yo, and laphroaig 18yo (an innocent question to work colleagues at dinner brought out a big response!)
Wouldn't mind trying a highland scotch. hopefully the Aussie ones mentioned.

So...is there a "Whisky Index" of good places to buy good stuff cheaply? Heading o/s again, so I was going to check duty free - airports visiting next month include SIN, IST, VIE. How about Australian duty free?

SIN is generally ok for duty-free whisky prices. Certainly much better than Aussie duty-free prices. In many cases, its cheaper to buy at somewhere like Dan Murphy's than to buy from Australian airport duty-free shops. Duty-free does not mean profit-free.

This is a great point. If you pay close attention to local prices and products stocked, you'll also start to notice rarer whiskies for sale thru duty free. Some of which are value,if you do research. NZ duty free turns up some nice value propositions occasionally, and SIN is decent, as noted.

There is the AFF JW Black index, where our members report in from time to time on cheap deals seen in their travels for a nominated product. While JW Black may not be your tipple, it does give a guide as to value in general. Keep in mind currency fluctuations can have a big effect, NZ is no longer the bargain it once was.

Sadly JW black is no longer the index it was - its being relegated to back shelves at DF stores as the Manistee Terry to flog "more premium lines" such as the overrated (IMHO) " Double Black ".

I quite like the Double Black and for a minor price uplift from Black, I find it one of the better value JW varieties.

I agree, its my preferred drink since Gold became essentially green under the label Gold Reserve.

I guess my antipathy is due to the fact that there are no longer any obvious sale prices for JW Black while the double is being discounted.

An example is SIN where the Black is now around SGD46 (it used to be SGD30) and the Double Black is SGD48.

Basically, with the thread indicated by markis10, you can add a general 10+% to the price these days.

This gem was sent to me today - $100 for Highland Park 21yo Single Malt Whisky 700ml

In the photo they show the 47.5% bottle, but it may be the 40% which was released for a few years due to supply shortages.

Hubby loves Highland Park and did the tour in June this year. We purchased 2 bottles on site, but one of them broke in suitcase on way home. :(
At that price happy to replace it for him.

No, I haven't... One of the boys at work sent me the link and I thought I would share.

Picked up a bottle of Lagavulin 16 Years Old in NZ duty free a couple of weeks ago for NZ$83 (about AUD$75). Sadly NZ Duty free has been taken over and it looks like prices have been enhanced.

Mods, given there are a couple of wine threads in AFF, would there be any interest in a Whisky thread?

Lagavulin 16YO now at Dans for $83.90

I've paid up to $120 for a bottle and still think it good value. Anything under $100 is a steal.

I've joined a whisky club based in Tasmania - though in my membership so far, no Aussie whiskies have been offered. A good range of styles from all over the world. The Japanese Nikka Miyagikyo 12YO would be the best, with the BenRiach 15YO Pablo Ximenez Sherry wood finish right up there.
