Advice for elderly people Singapore several day stopover.

I use the Royal Queens a fair bit and it does all I need.

http://www.royalqueens.com.sg/

If you book now you will get some good deals around $AUD150.

It is very well located and in easy walking distance to Raffles.

I am sure they would enjoy a wander around Raffles Hotel and even if a Singapore Sling is not their taste I highly recommended popping into the Long Bar to absorb the atmosphere and nostalgia.

The Raffles Centre is close-by too.

When you say elderly, how old? How mobile are they (walking difficult, or OK, just a bit slower than most, cope with trains/transport or not), and what interests do they have (shopping, food, history, sights, nature, relaxing etc, or just general sightseeing)?

+1 for Park Hotel Clark Quay. I stay there on pretty much every trip through Singapore (twice in the last few months) and often get upgraded to Club Floor with spacious rooms. The service is always excellent and breakfast is usually included which is great as finding a decent place to eat breakfast can be a challenge. They provide you with a free smarthphone which has wifi connectivity around the city too so access to google maps and free calls to five countries including Australia.

They have a very nice pool area to just relax if needed. If they cannot grant you late checkout then they will provide you with a room to shower and freshen up if you have an evening flight. I always take advantage of this before heading to Changi for SQ221 as we are all aware of the dismal shower situation in the KrisFlyer Gold lounge in Singapore.

The only downside could be proximity to public transport. I usually walk to Clark Quay MRT station which is a comfortable walk but may be too much in Singapore's humidity for an elderly couple.

An activity which would suit many ages makes use of the MRT.

Your parents could catch the East West line (green) at City Hall or Raffles Place, going west to Jurong Park. At Jurong Park, change to the North South line (red) and return to City Hall or Raffles Place. It takes over an hour, sitting in air-conditioned comfort and has most interesting views as the red line goes right out to the north of the island. We also really enjoy people watching on the train. Almost all of the trip is above ground.

When leaving the MRT, your parents will have to go to the information desk to pay the S$2 fare. I haven’t done this for a couple of years, but assume it still works well.

G´day there everyone,

I am trying to assist my inlaws with a big trip they are doing next year. They intend (after a cruise and a USA visit) to return via SIN, where they will have about 4 or 5 days, in May 2015.

They are elderly, and basically want to enjoy poking about, shopping, sightseeing. They are not rich.

Sounds like a good trip, but a cruise, USA and return via Singapore; they sound richer than me going on holidays. :D

Matt, yes it is a huge trip! The cruise was bought way in advance at a big discount - which causes problems now as they realize their departure is in school holidays - makes flights to USA a tad hard and zero QFF award availability. They have saved their QFF points for years - my wife and I have just spent the last few days trying to tweak the best use of their 320,000 points. We actually have come up with a winner: (I include this as it may assist some of you fellow AFFers who have been so helpful in this thread)

Anyone who has ever tried to get QFF award tickets internationally will be aware of the stunning ¨fees¨ that are added on. Part of the pain of the last week is trying to explain to my inlaws why QFF has to charge such things, and that award tickets are not FREE. (I love Qantas and it was not pleasant to bring that shock to them)

Anyway, we have managed to book on QFF points a single ticket NAN-LAX-LAS CPH-DXB-SIN SIN-BNE-MKY for 150,000 points each. The NAN-LAS and SIN-MKY are in Y, but the CPH-DXB-SIN are in Emirates J (one leg in A380) - a magnificent experience!

The trick was that (A) we managed to get an award booking to the US from Fiji when nothing was available ex-Australia and (B) the fees for this were only $515 each for the whole (effectively RTW) trip. (C) we saved enough money on the award fees and flight costs by doing the NAN trick, that it covers an extra two days travel and includes Fiji as an extra destination in their Once-In-A-Lifetime trip :)

dajop, being my inlaws, I have to be cautious in this :)
They are both in their mid+ 70´s, so that makes them ¨elderly", but they are in good shape for their age. My mother-in-law is still working and my father-in-law just retired a few days ago. So no specific medical problems (ie they can walk ok), but they are certainly not looking for hiking activities :)

I suspect their main interests are general sightseeing and relaxing. Seeing nice buildings, historical stuff, nice gardens, would be high on their list. Nightlife is not on the agenda, and shopping after their long trip will probably lack funds.

If nice gardens are on the agenda they should get up to the Botanical Gardens.Great orchid section. Will be a quite hot and sticky experience though.
Also down at Marina for their gardens.

I understand :D

It sounds like they shouldn't have a problem catching MRT's, as long as they can cope with the RFID swipe card entry barriers, and many people would indeed give up their seats for them. So anywhere in proximity to MRT should give them plenty of mobility without being too exhausted or having to queue for taxis at hotel or destination. Most hotels in the $150-$200 should be OK, I'd advise against Fragrance Hotel's or Hotel 81 chains, unless they enjoy the sight of heavily made up ladies coming and going ;) (I do exaggerate a little).

In history terms, the National Museum is quite interesting, and there's a few WW2 memorials and exhibits, such as the Battle Box at Fort Canning and Changi Museum & Chapel (via taxi or bus) is I am told (by relatives of that generation) is quite good. +1 for Botanic gardens, and either the Zoo or Night Safari are also quite good as far as Zoos go. Sound and light show at Marina Bay Sands is quite impressive, worth a look and of course old shophouse areas like Little India & Chinatown are interesting, although best left until evening when the sun goes down and slightly cooler.
