G´day there everyone,

I am trying to assist my inlaws with a big trip they are doing next year. They intend (after a cruise and a USA visit) to return via SIN, where they will have about 4 or 5 days, in May 2015.

They are elderly, and basically want to enjoy poking about, shopping, sightseeing. They are not rich.

Any suggestions for accomodation? It appears online that Singapore is a tad expensive and accomodation is in tiny rooms.

I know nothing about Singapore - not my neck of the woods.

ANY comments or advice are hugely appreciated.

Cheers,
Judd.

I have stayed in the Ibis on Bencoolen St which is a short walk from the Bugis St market. Yes, rooms small, but it's central and is fine when on a budget. I catch the metro to the Bugis St stop, walk through the market and grab a fresh sqooze fruit juice and walk on into the back door on the hotel. You could plot it on it on google maps. It'd be about 3 small pedestrian sized blocks. That's my 1 cent worth.

Do the IBIS if u like rock hard beds.

What budget are your inlaws looking to spend?
Plan ahead accordingly and u can get a good deal in SG. Weekend rates in SG are very competitive, weekdays are not.

There are alot of options in SG, public transport is very easy to use.

Cheers

Thats normal for Asia, and I believe Ibis have now rolled out a standard bed across the chain that is not hard.

Its only normal if u go low budget in SG/Asian hotels:cool:

It is possible to spend a bit more and get alot more comfort.

Both the Hilton and CP Changi have hard beds( hardly low budget by my standards), it's not related to $$$ and more to do with a chain having a defined standard.

Try a Starwood property in SG, there are three of them, none of them have hard beds.

I have, including the former Westin, Starwood were the first to adopt the worldwide standard bed format in the form of the aptly named Heavenly Bed.

Away from hotel beds, the Singapore zoo is very enjoyable. I recall there is a wheeled tour train type thing which would either a good start or a good finish for the in-laws.

Boat Quay is a short stretch of the Singapore River downtown which has many under-tent and inside eateries on one side (with touts, but they aren't too bad; menus on the outsides) and Parliament and a museum on the other side. A nice place to walk around (mostly level) and plenty of places to sit in cafes or have a beer etc. The Fullarton Hotel at one end is worth a look inside - nice aquariums IIRC.

You'll see the Maria Bay Sands from most vantage points - three towers linked across the top by pools etc Mostly a hotel, but you can go up one of the towers (fee) and get the view from the top. Well worth it.

Little India is fun to walk around. If they are not nervous, poking into the various buildings reveals markets and all things Indian :)

They'll have to have a look at Raffles Hotel of course. Again, part of a level walk, although the heat and humidity means that they will probably taxi a lot.

Get them familiar with the metro/MRT. it doesn't have stops everywhere they will want to go, but its clean, efficient and the ticket machines are easy to use. Busses would also be a good option.

that's a start. I had visited Singapore on business maybe 8 times before I finally got to spend a few days holiday there - very surprised at how many various things to do and I enjoyed it very much.

Singapore is perfect for oldies and I should know.Yes it can be expensive and often rooms are small. One hotel that does have large rooms where we have stayed is the Goodwood Park hotel. Not far from Orchard road.Prepaid rates are not too high-just checked and ~ $S270 in May.
Goodwood Park Hotel | Hotel in Singapore | 5 Star Hotel in Singapore
Of the major chain hotels only the Sheraton Towers is likely to be cheaper but it is showing it's age and a little further from Orchard road. But if not into hotel loyalty then some TAs should have reasonable rates or check the online consolidators.
However when there they can still eat pretty cheaply with lots of good food courts.Shopping is also pretty easy.
As to what to do it depends on their tastes. Most things are easily accessible by good and easy to use public transport.

+1 for the Clarke Quay area and hotels, Swisshotel is good and very close to the SMT. The Gardens by the Bay are well worth a half day visit.

People, I am tecnically inept so can´t work out how to do multiple quotes/replies to individuals in a single post, so for clarity and avoidance of multi-post clutter, let me say a combined Thank You! to everyone for their suggestions and advice. :)

I should have given a budget: essentially (like everyone) they want to avoid paying much, but I suggest their upper limit would be $200 per night (even though they would love to find something cheaper)

Using Hotwire secret deals I have identified the Royal Plaza on Scots for $200 AUD per night - that is way at the upper end for them but it appears very nice - has anyone been there or know the área?

Yohy, that Park Hotel Clarke Quay is also looking good: would that be a better área for a base for general oldie tourists?

it would be fine if they are likely to take cabs mostly to get around

Stayed there prior to the renovations, nice place, would suit elderly travellers quite well. Its near the corner of Scotts and Orchard, right in the golden mile along Orchard. Easy access to the MRT, new ION shopping mall (very high end), good restaurants along Orchard, tons of food courts, near the Goodwood as well...much better nightlife than Clarke Quay, which is quite the party zone. If its their one and only visit to SG and given their age, Scotts road will probably suffice better than other areas. Sheraton Towers can always be had on Fri/Sat/Sun nights for S$200.

Are they interested in shopping? If not, Orchard Road will appear busy, boring and generic. It is important to be within easy walking distance to the MRT, whatever that is for them, to visit the other places mentioned. It is humid there which affects activities and distances.

Are they flying Singapore Airlines by any chance? If they are, SQ offers great stopover packages with good hotel rates, airport transfers and all sorts of sightseeing options - many at hugely discounted prices. There are also discounts on meals etc.

If they are on another airline, I have found a couple of good hotels for a reasonable price. Many 'cheaper' hotels offer some really good rates, but beware those can often be rooms without windows! Once you start to get a room with a window the price goes up substantially.

After a lot of research (too much perhaps!) I have stayed at the 1929 Hotel (which was a good property, but tiny rooms), and also the Cham Leng hotel. They were around $100-120 IIRC. No complains about either and trip advisor reviews were better for those hotels than other ones in the same price category (not all the reviews are good, but there were less bad ones about those hotels it seemed). As taxis are cheap, staying a little way out of the main shopping places like Orchard road is not really so much of a problem.

One tip is that hotels often have discounted tourist entry tickets available from reception. The prices seemed cheaper than booking in advance.

Would second scotts road. Convenient and very near the mrt.
