Advertising in the QANTAS Club - NO MORE PLEASE!

I'm sitting in the QC at Sydney at the moment with SONY advertising TV's on one side of me and LANCOME advertising men's face cream on the other. So what you may ask? Well, I have earned the right to be in here, a lot of you have as well and as many I am sure have bought the right to be in here. Why should we then be forced to look at advertising literally forced upon us. The LANCOME advertising covers an entire window, blocking the view and cutting the light.

QANTAS Club, enough is enough! Citibank on the sky bridges, AMEX in every crook and cranny, a multitude of advertising throughout the flights in the way of on screen, QANTAS magazine - even the sick bags!

What is next QANTAS? How long will it be before my 737 home is sponsored by DELL, painted in AMEX corperate logos and the mid-flight snack proudly bought to you by McDonalds?

Stop it! You earn more from me in a month than I'm sure LANCOME paid for that window space. Stop being so greedy! Get some common sense...

But any time they want an advertising campaign by Glen Morangie or Penfolds I will happy to participate.

I don't mind the more passive promotions where you can participate if you choose. Not so happy about the ones where they tend towards slightly aggressive tactics such as with the credit card promotions.

Now that is ugly - and I can't imagine it sells one thing. While I guess I have got to the point where I just filter out advertising, I take your point.
 
I think the Lufthansa sponsorhsip is pretty impressive for Collingwood - not sure how well it would be understood overseas...

I was actually followed up the escalator in perth by one of the cred card pests. When does No mean No!!!!!!

Come on Qantas, shut this cough down.

True story - I have an AMEX Ultimate card, I got it when they were first offering 2ffp's for $1 spent - I have since paid for a lot of on departure upgrades with it since! Anyway, Qantas Club Melbourne, one late afternoon, possibly a weekend (I don't rearly remember the exact day) I walked in, went to the QC counter to change seating, turned around and an Indian bloke was there poking a Qantas Frequentflyer Bag in my face saying "here sir, would you like a bag?" ... So I took it off him, said thanks and wandered towards the bar :D

He chased me through the QC and darn near jumped me to get it back. I stood my ground (I was going to give it back but I didn't want him to know that straight away) and argued the point that he offered it to me with no catch, therefore it was now mine. I can be persuasive. He backed down and walked away... hehehe...

On my way out of the QC, I walked over to him, gave him an Oscar type smile and offered him the bag back, he had cracked a case of the sads, shook his head and turned away from me... I kept the bag with no remorse :D

Ok, a few weeks later, same club, same bloke - I'm getting an upgrade, I turn around only to have a set of headphones being thrust in my face - again I took them, said thanks - the poor bloke just looked at me, cogs fell into place and he then realised he was not getting them back either (I'm laughing my head of typing this) - As soon as I sat down, I opened the packaging, pulled out trusty iPod and started using them- hehehe

To cap the story, that same day, I met a customer in the T2 QC in Sydney and I told him the story - he laughed as well, the funny thing was, the next day on arriving back to Sydney from somewhere, an AMEX man offered me a keyring which I tried to get, but he kept firm grasp on it so I had to listen - as it turns out, he gave it to me anyway :D
 
On the one occassion that I approach an AMEX rep in the QP (had a specific question) I found them to be hopeless. I thought this would be easier than calling their call centre, but was not in fact the case.

They are just comission paid sales people - bugger all product knowledge.

I actually don't mind the passive promotions (e.g. Sony/Lancome) in the QF club - they are obviously under strict instructions to never approach anyone, let people come to them.

I had some time to kill once so I looked at the Sony laptops and got a nice goodie bag from Lancome!

And FWIW - my friend works at Amex, they all know how much everyone HATES those stands BUT they are the number 1 most efficient and profitable way to bring in new customers! - So blame the people there signing up for their continued existance.

(PS its great I actually have an Amex & Citibank card if I ever get really stuck with them I'll just flash my wallet! Although a simple 'No thanks' doesn't really destroy my day like some other posters here ;) )

I'm with you. I don't find them intrusive at all (the likes of Sony, Vodafone etc... anyway) and actually find them interesting sometimes. Always interesting to see/try something new in the club.

I don't see you guys complaining when Moet et Chandon etc... offer you a free glass in the F lounges. ;)

Tried that the other day - ended up having the AMEX rep badger me to "upgrade" my QF AMEX to the Ultimate/Premium/whatever it is card (the $395/year one)...had to tell him "no thanks" twice (while he was following me) before he got the message!

I used to say sorry, already got an Amex Plat and an Amex Gold, but the 'lovely' commision based sales droids used to just make a comment like "But you don't have one of these" (showing off a Rewards Maximiser or whatever the flavour of the month was).

The following comment doesn't specifically refer to Amex, but rather the various credit card spruikers at the airport:

While I'm not going to make any allegations here online, does anyone know what happens to the credit card applications that the credit card spruikers get at the end of the day? What do the staff do with all of your personal information? Are you sure they securely look after it, not joke around with their friends on public transport about their day and look at the applications on the way to goodness knows where? And what do they do with the applications when they get to wherever they are going? Securely stored before transmittal to their respective card company?

Oh, and yes. I hate the inane question "Are you flying on Qantas today"

I have the QF Ultimate card, but that was not good enough for one rep...tried to convince me to upgrade...to what I do not know...and neither did he!

..... and I've had exactly the opposite. A swap from Platinum to QF AMEX. I just walked away in the end.

I will though! I have seen/heard these people on a bus from Castle Hill to Sydney, on more than one occassion, discussing applications and how many they had that day and what type of card and what credit limit and whether so and so had returned etc....
