About red-eye flights

Re: Miles on Sale

~2300-0100 departures from Perth to the East coast of Oz however, are classic 'red-eyes'.

... and in my experience, I've heard these flights referred to as the redeye, rather than a redeye...

I actually don't mind red-eye flights as I could do what I please all day before the flight and then grab a few hours sleep at the destination and do what I want for the rest of the day. Even better when returning home.
I agree. The red-eye flights are unfortunately a reality of living in Perth, and sleep-depriving as they may be I've found that I'm pretty used to them now and tend to find that the time benefits outweigh the lack of sleep.
For instance I can take a red-eye to get to the east coast Friday morning, have the full day, work, go out that night, enjoy the weekend and enjoy all of Sunday, then take a 6am flight from the east coast on Monday to be back in Perth in time for the new work week. This works better during daylight savings when the time difference is 3 hours.

My main issue is that quite often on your outbound flight you arrive somewhere to discover that your room won't be ready for another 6 hours!
To avoid this I've been known to book a multi-leg flight to arrive a little later. The 6am departs from Perth arrive too late in the day but the red-eyes arrives too early so take another flight, relax, hit a lounge or two, have a shower etc.

I remember reading once that the origin of the 'special' bit was because some airlines used to discount the fares to get people to fly on them.
Red-eyes usually are still cheaper because they're often less popular so the cheaper fares are more readily availabe. Friday night is usually an exception, although this can vary if the flight leaves late Friday or early Saturday, as the latter is harder to find on booking systems for those who are not looking for it.

Re: Priority boarding on QF domestic - what is the story?

QF 400 (sigh... Red eye again) worked perfectly on Sunday. Slept walked through the PB lane.... Plane was packed suprisingly for a Sunday.

Pauly, what is your definition of a red eye? Mine is an overnight flight - QF400 is MEL-SYD, 0600 departure. How is that a red eye in your eyes? ;)

Re: Priority boarding on QF domestic - what is the story?

Basically a red-eye it's whatever you want it to be, but the overnight flight is the base aspect of the more common definitions.

IMHO QF400 is just a flight at OMG O'clock.

Perth to Sydney departing at 2350, arriving at 0605 is always good for a laugh. Especially when a couple of rows back are seated two young children who screm continuously for the entire flight, only interrupting the racket to vomit.

My best PER-SYD red eye effort was when a rather unattractive middle aged man kept trying to cuddle up to me... Seriously, he was leaning over so far that his head was on my headrest. I was waking him up every few minutes to tell him to get back over to his seat, but alas, within 10 minutes he would be back there...

I can sleep anywhere at anytime so overnights are less of an issue for me, but getting up to catch the red eye express QF400 means red eye to me :)
