Hi Flying with the family from Hon-LAX in September. This leg is with AA... has anyone upgraded using points on this route before? Newbie question (can you upgrade with Qantas or does it have to be AA points)

Also as we are flying Qantas to get to Honolulu will our luggage be charged as excess? Haven't flown in the states for a while but I've been reading that you only get carry-on included for flights within the USA?

Thanks for any help.

Is it one PNR or separate trips?

If one PNR i.e. MEL-HNL-LAX then the luggage allowance will be included on the HNL-LAX leg.

If you have a separate ticket HNL-LAX then the ticket will tell you what if any luggage allowance you have. Also, note that if you have any QF status even NB you may get some free luggage.

Our Itinerary is Perth-Syd, Syd to Hon.... 5 day stopover and then Hon-LAX if that helps. It was booked as one flight via Qantas just the stopover in Hawaii for a few days.

It’s probably a no to the upgrade, you can’t use Qantas points. If you have AA points and it’s booked as an AA flight (not QF codeshare) maybe, but I’m guessing you don’t.

You’ll get the Qantas allowance (excluding the extra frequent flyer allowance) for the whole ticket, including AA domestic - so 2x23Kg each.
