AA refurbishes 737's

I think it will be a little while yet before all are gone as some are only 14 years old, however they move to QF link or freight.

IIRC there are enough -800's on order to replace the rest of them.

Sure, but that does not mean they are retired, I would not be surprised to see them move across to replace the 717's, especially as that would add IFE as a benefit to the flights currently not getting it, would also help with the FIFO charters as well. I would also expect some to go to AAE.

Arent the 717s relatively young (compared to the 734s).

The 717 does the job for QLink so I would have thought they'll stay for some time longer than the 734s.

Different capacity too. 115Y vs 12J/132Y

Qantas dont own or operate the 717s anymore, they are leased and operated by Cobham, the 737s would allow more flexibility and capacity increase at little cost given they are owned by Qantas and probably paid off. Most of the FIFO are all Y, and the domestic 400s are 150Y config, the 12j/132Y is only applicable to the ZK's x 4.

I think QF are mindful of the A320 threat from strategic in that market as well, having a larger aircraft (compared to a FK100/717) with IFE on offer is a significant advantage.

Like others here, I'll be happy when AA MD-80s are gone.

I dunno. When I'm flying Y, I like them a lot, especially if you get a seat on the port side, with only two in the row. The wings are far enough back that you've got a bloody good chance at a view, even if the seat selection is limited.

Then again, I really lucked down when I somehow managed to piss off a checkin chick in Oklahoma City last year. My co-writer got a window seat up front, but instead of getting to sit beside her, I got the very last seat at the back. Not quite sitting on the toilet, but pretty close. And a lovely view of the side of a big old jet engine, murmuring softly in my ear.

She ever gets into my taxi at Canberra Airport, she rides in the boot.

My comments stem from the fact that I always seems to get the row next to the engines. So I spent the whole flight with my ears buzzing and had to shout to my wife sitting next to me.

Probably the only time I get to shout at her without getting beaten up afterwards

Whilst I enjoy flying, I didn't enjoy the MD80s!

The big problem I have with the AA B757 is the F seats are bloody awful. I haven't flown on one of the refurbished 757s, but I'm guessing that they're much nicer. On the other hand, I actually quite like the MD80s ... the F cabin is v quiet due to the position of the engines.

Apparently only one bird refurbished to date, and AA focus is more on the 737s.
Unf as I have DFW-ANC,ANC-ORD and EWR-LAX on 757 in Sept. The pain is worth it for the 450 SCs though

I was up the pointy end of an MD80 on Monday, and it was delightful. Very quiet and without a view obstructing wing to be seen anywhere...

It was obviously in a bit better condition than the noisy old beast in which we travelled last October from DFW to SEA.

AA have also ordered more 737's:

Ninety-two more airshow orders for Boeing
POSTED BY JOHN GILLIE ON JULY 21, 2010 AT 3:39 PM

Boeing took the wraps off 92 more airliner orders today at the Farnborough Airshow as both domestic and foreign airlines and leasing companies continued their quest for new, efficient capacity.

The aerospace company, which builds its airliners in Everett and Renton, got orders from American Airlines for 35 more 737-800s to replace its aging fleet mainstay the MD-80.

By the end of 2012, American will have 195 737-800s in its fleet. The next generation 737, built in Renton, is 35 percent more fuel efficient than the MD-8

Wow, 195 of a single type is a lot..... shows how big AA really is.

IIRC, WN is the largest operator of the 737 series with a total of 541 craft (173 x 733, 25 x 735 and 343 73G -- sauce: Wikipedia), probably followed by FR with 250 x 73H (again from Wikipedia).

Yes, do realise others have more, however both those operations run exclusively 737s. AA have plenty of other AC as well. :-|

I was suprised to read last night (QF mag) that QF still have 24 737-400s in their fleet.

yes, i thought that was a lot too - guess they can be handy for some of the routes that are still strong enough for the QF brand, but a 738 has too many seats. Thinking some of the Nth Qld routes, CBR etc.

Still a lot of 737-400 operating ADL-SYD.
