Hi, can someone help me with my next trip to the US. I'm a QFF Gold, I'm flying the following flights:

  • QF7 SYD to DFW connecting with QF4508/AA429 DFW to RDU
stop in RDU for two days
  • AA1541 RDU to MIA connecting with AA1726 MIA to MCO
stop in MCO for five days
  • QF4504/AA351 MCO to DFW connecting with QF8 DWF to BNE/SYD

The QF7 and QF8 flights are in Y+, whereas the others are all just in Y. On QF7/8 I'm sure I can take onboard two carry on bags, but will will be the case on the connecting AA flights? and also the RDU to MCO leg? does QFF Gold mean anything for additional carry-on with AA? I 've read that as a oneworld sapphire, if I do need to check in bags i shouldn't have to pay for them?

I'm going to try to take a roller bag and a "computer" bag (well its a bag with a computer in it and some other stuff)

For flights to/from/within the USA there is no additional carry-on allowance for any class. i.e. It's the same for all classes.

Basically you are permitted one bag and one personal item.

With Qantas the limits are: (Qantas Baggage | Carry on baggage | Country Specific)
Passengers may only carry on one bag plus a personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack or similar, per passenger.

How Much Can I Carry On?

You can carry on one small bag plus one personal item per passenger as long as the carry-on bag fits comfortably in the sizer without being forced and does not exceed overall dimensions of 45 inches (length + width + height).

The maximum dimensions cannot exceed any of the following measurements: 22" long x 14" wide x 9" tall or 114cm (56 x 35 x 23 cm).

All carry-on items should be stowed in an overhead bin.

Personal item
- includes: purse, briefcase, laptop bag OR a similar item such as a tote that does not exceed 36 inches( length+width+height) and must fit under the seat in front of you.

AA lets you get away with whatever you want. It borders on the ridiculous, so my tip is get in early!

Thanks for the responses. So it sounds like:

1) Keep the laptop bag as small as possible so its a "personal item"
2) Go wait at the gate as early as possible. I assume AA does have priority boarding for oneworld sapphire?

Yes indeed.

I would caution against bending the rules if you want to keep your bag in the cabin.

The only airline to measure my carry-on luggage has been AA, and they've done it a few times now.

And, they weren't singling me out, they measured/weighed everyone. Seems to happen on the fuller flights.

On all occasions I've had one roll-aboard bag (48/34/23cm [105cm]) plus a small bag for my laptop (goes under the seat in front). No problems.

Also, this is the laptop bag I use. It will fit a 15" but I actually have a 13" MacBook air (very slim!)

Crumpler bags are neat.
This is the roller bag I have, dimensions are: 55 x 35 x 23cm, 2.4kg (source here):

This is the one I was trying to pass for a "personal item", dimensions are: 31 x 56 x 22cm (source here):

But to be safe this can be laptop bag instead of the above, dimensions are: 45 x 33 x 11cm (source here):

AA size limits for "personal Item" is 36" or 91.5cm.

31 x 56 x 22cm is 109cm (43") and 45 x 33 x 11cm is 89cm (35").

Hi all,

travelling next month LAX-JFK on AA4 J class.

Trying to do carry on only as only away 8 days not including flights (and will discard old socks jocks as I go).

i have got away with the following on QF international, but wondered about AA even in J??

55cm roller (no probs)
mini back back (should qualify as personal item)
soft nylon suit carrier (basically just the suit on a hanger - no hard casing)

thanks in advance

US regulations mandate one bag and a personal item in any class (hence this limit even when on QF in First/Business to/from the USA).

Airlines can make their own rules within that.

Many PAX stick with the 2 pcs but try to get away with oversized bags.

Three pieces is likely to be too much - you may get away with it on one flight, but cold be forced to gate check on the next (or stuff one into another).

Here's AA's web page on their rules: American Airlines Carry-on Baggage Allowance Information On AA.com

Thanks, I guess I will try my luck as it is really just a like a jacket they would hang up for you in the closet.

gate checkin is far more preferable to full checkin as you get it back at the gate at the other end

6 months ago we did 9 AA flights in J & F.
I had a small hard roll aboard, a backpack and a Hedgren travel handbag.
As we boarded one of the flights, I was told I could only have 2 carry on bags. I simply stuffed my Hedgren bag into my backpack, proceeded down the aerobridge and took it out when I sat down! This was unbelievable considering some people appeared to have the contents of their house including the kitchen sink!
All other flights were ok.
