AA buy miles promo, 50% bonus, increased annual limit to 60k

You can only buy or share 60,000 miles in a calendar year. Sharing is also poor value.

What you should do is buy as many as you can in this sale, and wait for the next one early next year if you need more and are prepared to wait. Typical bonuses are 12-20k on a 40k purchase.

Sorry if I sound a bit naive about this but it was only when I saw a post about it last night that I was even aware of this buy miles thing.

So I can go onto the Aa.com website and purchase 90k points for $1808 USD including sales tax and then use them for as normal FF points on one world?

Its probably fair to say that points earn is best in higher classes but just as an economy award I may be looking to go to the US next year and would probably go CBR-SFO-LAX-BRI-TSV-CBR. (looking to be in Townsville the weekend I get back).

Purchasing through Qantas it looks like it is $2480 but with AA it is 85k points + $213.20 USD.

So could I do this and save $400+ plus have 5k AA miles left over.

Am I missing a catch?

Thanks

Are you talking about buying QFF points or buying a revenue fare through QF?
If the latter: you will earn status credits and points, if any classic award on either QF or AA you won't earn a thing.

I'm also not aware of any CBR-SFO flights on OW..

I must be misinterpreting something here...

Oh, and you can't combine AA miles and QFF points.

On the CC - I've found when speaking with AAdvantage I always use the El Segundo method - works 100% and they don't get flustered.

Oh - and always, I means ALWAYS only speak with US AAdvantage.

Calling the Australian number is as smart as putting a pedophile in charge of the kindy.

Totally agree the Australian Call centre is a nightmare to deal with. I have had an Eithad Award booking which has not been ticketed after 2 days. Spoke to the Aus call centre who advised that Etihad required further passenger information, ie Title Mr/Mrs/Ms, and Date of Birth before the ticket could be issued. That's fine, I don't have a problem with providing additional information, however the customer service officer told me that they needed to cancel the entire award and re-book as they couldn't make these minor changes to the original booking. How can that be possible? - luckily there was another award seat available but in my opinion the Australian call centre do not know what they are doing. Dealing with AA in the US is a dream compared to the local office.

Oh, I meant direct.. AFAIK "CBR-SFO" is one segment

no it's not one segment. Otherwise it would be impossible for someone to fly on Qantas from ADL to FRA. There is plane and aircraft change in SIN. Likewise ti would be impossible for someone from CBR to fly to anywhere internationally on OW because there are no non-stops ex CBR. CBR-SFO or CBR-FRA or CBR-LHR is not one segment.

You might like to confirm the cost of the points. I thought 40k AA points cost $1800. 60k might cost a bit more.

According to the buy miles web site, 60,000 miles plus 30,000 bonus = $1650 + 7.5% sales tax + $35 fee = $1808.75.

According to the buy miles web site, 60,000 miles plus 30,000 bonus = $1650 + 7.5% sales tax + $35 fee = $1808.75.

Which is exactly what I paid 2 weeks ago for 90,000 miles

Correct, as mentioned in the first post.

no catch. Just it will be subject to award availability. If you are flying economy it is usually ok to the states. Premium classes are harder. You may have slightly less access to the number of award seats because you are booking via AA and not via QF (Qf may at times make additional seats available to their members only)
Does booking 4 award seats (i.e 4 FF AA accounts) to USA (same flights) via AA USA website seem like an impossible task or should I call AA USA? I have no AA status however QF Platinum.

In premium cabins - pretty darn tough.

F - impossible. You may get 2 seats on the same flight but you have to book at the 330 day mark.
J - possible, but you have more chance of winning an instant scratchie.
Y - sure - no probs, but that's not the attraction of AAdvantage ;)

I guess another way you could do it is if this offer is so attractive maybe buy 90,000 miles yourself and get a family member to buy 90,000 into their account for you (ie you pay for it) and then use yours to book one way and get them to book your return.... As opposed to buying miles yourself in this offer and waiting to see what the offer will be next year...

Not sure if you have seen the US dividend miles offer as well (if you have only just seen this AA offer), that is another good one to consider although CBR is probably a difficult place to start as not sure any *A airline flies out so you would maybe need to get the first leg down to SYD or MEL yourself... You could do a J trip stopping in the US and Europe for only about $2100-2400...

Good point, just wondering if a EXP and WP would have a better chance of more F and J seats or are the award seats simply limited and it is which alliance member gets in first. In other words does being elite with 2 OW airlines increase the chances of more seats in F and J on the same flight? Probably not but I will give it a go sometime in the future as SWMBO and the apprentice SWMBO all want me to take them to Europe in F, guess I will just have to settle for J by the sounds of it.

QF may make additional seats available for its own elites, but I'm not aware of any other seat holding for elites on cross-program redemptions (which would require a concerted effort by all OW members to hold back seats for elites)

So wanted to share my "nightmare" with AAdvantage reservations. Spent more than 10 hours with them on the phone and still nothing ticketed!

Wanted to buy two one ways PER - xHKG - HAN and SGN - xHKG - PER on CX J. No other way to go via oneworld it seems?

Sector: PER - xHKG - HAN
1/ Wanting to charge 57.5K miles per sector instead of the 35K in the first instance. Told them to look at the award table and they conceded it was 35K in the end. Held the reservation whilst I buy the points.
2/ Called the Australia line (24 hours) at 10pm Perth time - seemed to be diverted to America to ticket this award. Had to be charged the 21 day expedited ticketing fee (no issue). Cash component came up to US$120 I think including ticketing fees...

  • Agent says will need to convert it to AUD before charging your credit card. It will be A$200 please. Excuse me? How does your system do the FX conversion? They look into it and say oh we need to charge the Australia service centre fee (NB: according to information volunteered by this call centre, you don't have to pay the Oz call service fee if you pay the 21 day expedited ticketing fee). Tried to tell them that US$120 fee is correct and since it already includes the expedited US$75 service fee. It seems to be you (or your system) is stuffing up somewhere either in the FX conversion or double adding another Oz service centre fee. They don't seem to get that...
  • After going on hold (agent needs to speak to supervisor), they finally concede that it shoudl be around A$120 and take my credit card details.
3/ Take my credit card details, booking status changed to "ticketed". But knowing that this is not sufficient without a e-ticket number, I monitor this vigorously. 24 hours later not here - I call the call centre who assure me all is well. 48 hours later, no e-ticket number and I know something is wrong and call back again. This time they say oh, we need a copy of your photo ID and credit card! What? This is new and I have never heard this before. I leave it as that because I have other fish to fry with them on my other leg.

SGN - xHKG - PER (CX J)

1/ Again, Asia Zone 2 to Oceania should be 35K points in J but they wish to price it as 57.5K again (i.e. two tickets as Asia #2 to Asia #2 and Asia #2 to Oceania). After being put on hold (I need to speak with my supervisor) multiple times, they concede it should be 35K points and proceed to hold the reservation

2/ Called the Asian office (HKG) to try and ticket - thinking that they will understand CX routings and geography a little better.
  • Lady says it is 57.5K points please. I say no, its meant to be 35K and this was agreed during the reservation process. Sorry sir, can't see anything and we can't do anything - we can only price according to the computer system and have no flexibility - you will need to call the US Aadvantage desk.
  • I call the US desk. Again, the agent said it is 57.5K miles please and I say no that is not right. It was initially agreed during the booking process that it was 35K points She tries to make excuses that you are going to HKG first and I say no, I'm transitting in HKG. I just want to get from SGN to PER and it seems that is the only way to do so in J. She puts me on hold and comes back and says ok, I have checked with the relevant department and it is 35K + some taxes.
  • She says how would you like to pay - online or credit card? I think it will be great if I could pay online and she says she'll send the payment link to my email address on file (on hindsight, I am not sure if this option is even valid at all or whether she was just deluded?).

3/ Anyway email never came so I call US reservations again at night to finally try to ticket and they want to charge 57.5K points again! I say NO, the agent I spoke to in the afternoon has said its 35K and has noted it in my record. Unfortunately nothing! And then we spend another 2 hours trying to fix it to 35K points (a lot of time being put on hold). Finally, all done and now ready to ticket and pay with my credit card. Oh sorry! We can't accept your Australia credit card. I try to get them to put 00000 in the Zip and AU as the state (instead of the El Segundo method) but she says she can't set this up. She says there is an authorisation to debit 35K points and taxes for your ticket though and maybe to try the Australia office. I say OK.

4/ Call up the Oz office (24 hour line) and want to ticket. THEY WANT TO CHARGE 57.5K points again and that there is no record of 35K on the file. I give up...

Thinking of totally cancelling both booking now and kinda regret buying the 90K points in this promotion. What should have been a really simple process seems to have wasted 10 hours of my time... And, I don't even have the consolation of anything ticketed.

So this whole foreign credit card issue really is annoying so would appreciate how others have gone. It doesn't help that I have to fight so hard for them to charge the right miles SGN - PER too! And not having CX availability online is also such a pain.

YMMV.

So an update to this rather incompetent situation. If this is representative of US legacy carrier operations, I am quite sure they all deserve to go bankrupt.

PER - xHKG - HAN
1/ So update on sending credit card with them.
  • Tried to fax the credit card to them but line perpetually busy.
  • Call up again and they say don't fax but email credit card + ID to the Fraud Audit department. I do that, and include two booking reference on the covering email (we booked two J tickets together but somehow reservations split the PNR during ticketing)
  • 24 hours later got an email response from a real human saying card is good and account ready to go
  • Shortly after, PNR #1 ticket was issued with e-ticket number. But PNR #2 still on hold
  • Call up again and ask what's going. Agent says there is still a block on PNR #2 and need to resend credit card details?
    • Such gross incompetence! Points + taxes were both coming off the same AAdvantage account + credit card, both PNR's were included in the verification email sent off to AA HQ!
    • So resend credit card details Fri midday PERTH time. No response to date. Call up AA to find out why, and they say that the Fraud Audit office is closed

SGN - xHKG - PER

1/ Still trying to ticket this. So they agreed to go and ticket at 35K miles per ticket after receiving authorisation from someone who can make a decision. But received an email yesterday saying to call AA. Find out that ticketing department is knocking back this ticket and want to charge the 57.5K points. Not sure how hard I am going to push this as I am really fed up with speaking with AA. Might use my Avianca miles instead.

Not sure how such a relatively simple process can segue into such a nightmare? It sounds so simple but we have seemd to hit brickwalls with AA every step of the way. To be fair, I haven't tried the El Segundo method. Tried the ZIP 00000 and State AU method but agent said they couldn't set it up.

I'm happy that I have Avianca miles. So probably book an SQ J back from SGN - PER for cheaper price too!

the main problem you are hitting is that AA wants to charge you the higher price for the SGN fare, and everytime someone agrees to the lower, it comes back at the higher. I would have given up on the second go! I appreciate this is frustrating, but no more so than the inane response from the QF call centre that they won't waive a service fee because 'not all redemptions are available on-line' routine (liek how is that my fault??). QF doesn't offer some stuff, and neither does AA. If AA can't find a published fare for SGN-PER then it's going to have to be constructed as a double award.

just wondering if the availability of F points redemption flights will fall with this promotion, sounds too easy a way to book an F flight, suspect that for the average public without EXP status seats will be very scarce, if not impossible to find, does anyone have any experience with this at the moment?

Does an EXP have the ability to request award seats to be released when they are not listed as "available"? (Like a QF WP can do for classic awards)

yeah - i've booked several QF F awards with these points promos (no status with AA). AA offers a standard 40K allowance each year, and each year for the last couple of years has always upped that to 60K in december (with bonuses on top of that). So this is nothing new.

QF F availability can be scarce, but with sufficient forward planning and a little flexibility (a week here or there) I've been fine (although these have been for flights AU-Asia which are now drying up except for HKG).
