... They are suggesting that the first 15 x 787 (which are for JQ) will be delivered by the same final date. So they are suggesting they will catch up the delay over the first 18 months or so. That would mean the QF 787s are planned to be delivered pretty much on time, and its those deliveries that will see the 767s move off QF international routes. ...
That's creativity on the part of Boeing, ignoring information released in December 2005.

The first Qantas 787 (and 16th for the Qantas Group) was to be delivered in July 2009.

It's now not going to be until on or after December 2009.

Jetstar had expected to take delivery of its first B787-8 aircraft in July next year.

So there is a definite delay of at least 4 months for JQ, probably more. Jetstar were to get the Qantas groups first 15.

As for Qantas specifically they were to take delivery of the first B787 in July 2009.
Seems like the delay is going to be 7 months to Feb 2009: Jetstar sets Dreamliner date | NEWS.com.au
... Hardware shortfalls have slowed Boeing's production line for the aircraft ...
No reference to when Qantas were to get their first one (was to be July 2009, then "After December 2009").

Given QF have only ordered the -9 model, I would say some time 2010 (as that is EIS for the type)

all 15 -8's will go to JQ

Do we have any knowledge on the planned routes for the QF 787s? Are hey expected to go into int'l service and thus have Skybed MkII? Or even Skybed Mk III ;)

Considering the first of the 787's are off to Jetstar, a delay can only mean that more of the QF leisure routes will remain will QF a little longer before being spun off to Jetstar and passengers enjoying Jetstar's "award winning" LCC customer service.

So maybe it's a good thing.

I've done HNL twice now with JQ and have found their service to be very good

Actually, I agree that it's not too bad. I've done BKK and found the service ok. But give me QF over JQ anyday. ;)

The thing I dislike (but it's a great business model) is the movement of low yield routes to Jetstar where the passengers then have no option to fly a full service carrier/the full service carrier airfares are heavily inflated compared to the LCC. If we see Jetstar flying the Kangaroo route, I don't think fares on Jetstar will be significantly cheaper than the current QF Red-E-Deals but overall, Qantas fares will definitely go up to a new base level. For the little longer that Jetstar have no aircraft, QF fares will be cheaper.

Interesting - this does not bode well for the cold soak test which will need to take place after the power-on and initial flight tests.

There was some conjecture in an Australian Aviation editorial (I think that's where I read it) that significant delays in the test schedule could see the 787 miss it's opportunity over the northern winter to conduct the cold soak test. This test can only be conducted in a limited number of airfields and only at the height of the Northern Winter (No Southern hemisphere airfields get cold enough) - missing this winter would add a significant delay in the certification schedule and therefore the 787's commercial introduction...

So I'm going to travel to Oz from LAX/SFO in Sept. Do I have any chance
of getting on some new metal (or should that be carbon)?

Possibly the A380 from LAX to SYD/MEL. At the moment, QF hope to introduce the A380 at the end of August onto LAX flights. At this stage, it looks like QF93 & QF94 (the direct MEL flights) will get the Airbus first. With one aircraft to start with, it'll only be a few days a week until more aircraft arrive later in 2008.

I can't imagine QF will update the timetable until much closer to the time in case there are further delays or testing takes longer than expected.

On a 787? Highly unlikely as JQ were going to get the first 787s delivered to the Qantas group anyway....

Yep thats correct and also means the A330's start coming back to QF as well :p

It'll be interesing to see what mainline decide to do with them now they're equipped with the ER engines. The original 4 QF aircraft with no skybeds, I guess they'll go back onto CityFlyer service between SYD & PER? (VH-EBA to VH-EBD)

The last two aircraft (VH-EBE & VH-EBF) were only delivered mid last year so hopefull QF had enough common sense to put the strengthened floors in and they'll join long haul ops?

When QF announced that PER-SYD/MEL was going to move to all wide-body operations, they did state they would be using A330 and 767 aircraft, so one would assume they mean the 4 original A330's.

I guess this means the end is near for the 747-300s? There is no way QF will use them somewhere else I guess? Sad, I still love to fly in in them! Beats the hell out of a 737 on that route :(

Not meant as a smart a** comment. Most things are better than a 737 on most routes.

I would say that retirement is not far away for the 743's. If the A380 had come on time, I suspect they'd already be gone.

The 743's cost more to run due to flight crew (ie required a flight engineer) and also no doubt fuel burn (but i am not sure if this is the case, just an assumption since they are older, no winglets etc)
The real problem no dount is the cost of a D check, if you bother doing it then you may as well keep them longer.

QF will receieve 3 x A380's in 2008, maybe even 4, well if all goes to plan anyway, + a few more A330's so even with more routes being flown i think the 743's life not going to be much longer.

Can't say i like them that much, i mean i would just as much prefer an A330 or 744, less so the 767's but any of them is fine MEL-PER.

Anybody care to guess if Boeing will make another delay for the 787 ?? just my speculation but i would say it could well do and it will be a slow start to volume production. I wonder how many airframes are built now ?
