The swipe is easy until you're down to the last $50 or something and your petrol bill is above that, that's when it becomes a stupid nightmare.

I spent $50.01 and the gift card refused to work (declined) and the guy had to reduce the cost by 1 cent.

You can't also use the gift card and then top up the shortage by any other means other than cash.

My local just splits the bill when that happens and I pay using 2 cards. Easy.

The trick is to use the gift card last (get the operator to process the other part-payment first eg. $5 cash then $30 gift card for a $35 fill.

This is infact what BP T&C state.....any shortfall payment to be made in cash.
The point of my post was to explain that the terminal operator is usually happy to check the amount you have remaining on your GC and issue one payment for that amount, then payment for the balance of your purchase can be made using another GC or your Credit Card. No cash required.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I've taken to leaving the receipt showing the amount used and the amount remaining with the gift card and have been fortunate enough not to strike problems with payment, as I have used the $100 cards as two fills (generally $49.99 first and $50.01 to clear the card). The $200 cards I'll probably use as 2 x $65 and 1 x $70 fills, or 2 x $70 and 1 x $60. YMMV.

Well, I finally have used up all my Gift Cards and now back to buying my petrol again from Woolworths Petrol to gain my multiple FF points from EDR (I selected it rather than the x cents off).

BP, it was fun whilst it lasted, but now I need a new promo

I haven't filled up at BP since the promo. Usually more expensive and don't get the extra QFF..

I've got one more fill before my gift cards are used up....time to move on.

Used the last of my $200 cards recently but filled up today at Bankstown (Milperra?) BP where it was a few cents cheaper (8c) than anywhere else I saw on my trip across from Northern Beaches. You just need to be selective on any day. Likewise I can't wait for the next bonus offer.

Wish vintage cellars would bring back the 6 bonus point deal. It only required you to buy $21,666 worth of beer and bourbon to save enough points for Europe return in J on SQ! It's barbie season soon so they need to hurry up.

Yes good days indeed.

Unfortunately Amex have been sadly lacking in bonus promos fora while.........

Only using Amex now when I really have to (3:2:1 points on Plat Edge)

With the "improvement" of 3/2/1/0.5 points, I've ended up signing up for a Virgin High Flyer card with 1.25 points per dollar. Using it everywhere except for groceries and fuel.

Plat edge is:
3 for groceries
2 for petrol
1 for everything else
0.5 for utilities

0.5 for utilities

Also noticed it is 0.5 at Australia Post. I don't class AusPost as utilities, so all my stamps, Express Bags, etc. are now bought with another card as not copping 0.5 per dollar!

Thanks for the heads up. Didn't know that.

Can anybody here offer explanation for the different MR pts earn rates between Amex Plat and Amex Plat Edge?

Have alook at the amex site - https://www.americanexpress.com/australia/ . Just click on the picture of the card to get a rundown on costs and benefits.
The Platinum Edge page follows;
[h=2]Reward yourself[/h] With the Platinum Edge Credit Card, you receive complimentary enrolment in the Membership Rewards Ascent program[SUP]4[/SUP]

  • Earn 3 Membership Rewards points[SUP]4[/SUP] per dollar spent at major supermarkets
  • Earn 2 Membership Rewards points[SUP]4[/SUP] per dollar spent at major petrol stations
  • Earn 1 Membership Rewards point[SUP]4[/SUP] per dollar spent on all other purchases excluding utilities, insurance (except those issued by American Express), telecommunication providers and government bodies in Australia where you earn 0.5 Membership Rewards points[SUP]4[/SUP] per dollar spent

Thanks for that - as I said I am not the sharpest pencil in the tin.

I have just acquired David Jones Amex with 30K bonus pts and 3pt earn at supermarkets and servos.

I am still in a quandry as to just what AMEX thought processes are in relation to pts earn for Cent, Plat V Plat Edge or Amex DJ?
