Yes I was looking at SYD-HNL awards for 4 people and the taxes were like $1400 for Y awards! Might as well book on Jetstar!

...so the 28K points saves a whopping $95.

Pretty much a QF 'award' is using points to buy a meal. The passenger pays the cost (in cash) for the fuel to carry themselves and their bag. The cabin crew and IFE are there anyway. And an award seat is a seat that would otherwise be empty. So no loss to the airline there.

I am of the view that if you have say SG or WP then the difference of a economy and business class ticket shrinks by a bit since you would get all of the on-the-ground priority in both cases, so the only difference would be the seat on the plane (assuming you ate you share in the lounge). In another words, you don't get all of the benefit on J class because your FF status already gives you the some of the perks as if you are flying J.

Same can be said between economy/business and first for WP holders.

I agree but SQ want over $1000 each SYD-BKK return for 25 February departure and 05 April arrival. I can't wait for a sale and my dates are not flexible as I'd like to be away during Catholic Easter and return for Orthodox Easter.

TG have a sale on just now.
$735.16 for those dates.

As a WP, I found four passengers in QF F for DXB-MEL with two toilets, and 2-3 FAs was still amazing. Business has lie flat seats and is great, but First takes things to a whole other level. I'd like to do First again, but my recent return trip to LHR (successful upgrades both ways) may well be the only time I do it, especially with First being axed from QF9 come late March next year.

As a WP I was quite happy to choose to accept an upgrade at the gate (I didn't have to wait that long - I got my upgrade about 60 hours before departure both ways) knowing that I would not be missing out on First Lounge access if I had to wait that long. Whereas if I didn't have First Lounge access I would probably have been more reluctant to request my upgrade be considered as late as at the gate, as the First Lounge experience is a valuable part of the experience of flying First.

Of course you can't upgrade from Business reward seats to First.

its the outrageous fees on top of the points used that are the problem, its about time Qantas cut us some slack and stop this gouging, the majority of international airlines charge a pittance on top of award points take CX and AS for example.

I saw those but not sure I can credit those fares to any program as they would be non earning? Also no lounge access other than possibly Priority Pass but have wife and daughter. If I am gong to do that then may as well go Scoot.

I need to fly Devonport DPO to Washington IAD early feb and thought I could use the 50% offer. Unfortunately, the taxes are very high and on this route it became too complicated due to the eligible sectors.

HOWEVER, when I check the Amercian Airlines website I find loads of perfect flight options with half the $$ cost even. Trouble is how do I get 80,000 points from my Qantas FF program to the AA Admiral club scheme??? Maybe someone here has 80k AA miles who'd like to transfer them to me and I trasfer 80k to your QFF account??

Walter---

Unfortunately you can't transfer points from QF to AA. Although not illegal, the barter of points is against the terms and conditions of QF and AA programs.

For the first time ever, this offer prompted me to use points to fly in Y. I've booked MEL-SIN at 14,000 points + $130 one way. The cheapest return cash fare available on my dates was $770 (with SQ). So even if we assume the cost of the one way trip would have been half of that, this would represent a saving of $255 for 14,000, which is about 1.82c per point. That's acceptable value in my book - although it's certainly nowhere near what I have achieved on many occasions in the past, it's a trivial amount of points - e.g. I made 10,050 points for $16 last week with the IG offer!

In reality though, the value is better than that in my case, as I want to fly back with SQ in J on points, and buying a one way cash fare is prohibitively expensive. Additionally, by flying out with QF I get F lounge access in MEL, as opposed to the SQ J lounge, which is pretty ordinary. And I didn't want to fly return with QF as they only have a night flight on teh way back. So all in all this offer was worth it for me, but as always it depends on individual circumstances.

I too used this offer. I'm off to Japan over easter and flight cost is ludicrous. Booked to Hong Kong return and will make my way on a budget carrier from there.

I took up the offer, PER-LAX over Easter and snagged Premium economy on the return leg (LAX-MEL) and paid for seat 80k on the A380 on the way there(SYD-LAX).

Still made for a cheap trip

In the end I decided against using this offer.

Taxes of ~AUD480 for 2 people and infant one-way to Thailand are bordering on the ridiculous. Then a different routing for the return and taxes of ~AUD400 totally kill the deal.

The combined taxes are close to $900 which is a return airfare for 1 person. I'll pay another $900 and purchase the other airfare.

Together we should earn close to 20,000 QFF points (and SCs) which added to the points saved are half the points required for a Oneworld award.
