Nice. However, it’d need to be a discount on J/F to tempt me, but there’s so much demand for J/F reward seats that they’ll never discount those.

A good deal but the usual QF ripoff with fees, charges, levies, surcharges and brown envelopes means the price is just about the same as a cheap carrier to some destinations. 35K to Tokyo return but $360+ in fees. Okay no one can fly that cheap but you know what I mean. I wish you could pay for some of that with points like you can with VA.

Exactly... the *only* thing this '50% off' sale does is accurately reflect the price of the seat in relation to points and co-pay. Flights to Europe are a little over $1000. Flights to Japan for $600 buying them full revenue. This sale just makes if fair and equitable for a few days during the booking window.

I guess it's cheaper for QF loyalty to get folk to use their points on empty seats they couldn't sell anyway than redeem for toasters (which cost money).

On the face of it I thought not a bad deal, but after doing some searching.

MEL-SIN 28000pts+$320
MEL-HKG 28000pts+$350

Assuming you get a sale fare for the $650 mark to HKG (a little over the odds really), a little over 1c per point before you consider points earn on a paid fare. I guess my QFF will continue in mothball status!

If you were to use this promo could you then upgrade to J Using Points? (subject to all the usual lottery etc)

Excellent value even with the high surcharges. Shame BKK not on the list.

I was going to book some awards anyway.

i know this promotion is for QF flights only, but is there anyway to force redemption via cathay pacific airlines? ie i want fly from ADL to HGH china via HKG, but qantas site would force me to fly to melb or syd , then to HKG and use cathay dragon for the last leg.

Don't know about excellent. Seems to just be trading points for cash at best. Probably the odd award in holiday periods that may present better value. Although obviously everyone is different and I know you don't mind redeeming for Y (and neither do I if I need to).

But I'd sooner pay SQ/VA $600 to fly MEL-HKG return during a sale than give QF $350 + lose 28,000pts.

I agree but SQ want over $1000 each SYD-BKK return for 25 February departure and 05 April arrival. I can't wait for a sale and my dates are not flexible as I'd like to be away during Catholic Easter and return for Orthodox Easter.

I think 24,400 points + fuel surcharge for 2 SYD-HKT is a good deal. A night in coughet and then head off next day to Pattaya.

Then returning HKG-SYD for 28,000 points + ~$280 for 2 is quite ok but I need to also add on BKK-HKG. Think lounge crawl in HKG would be appreciated. Or I could do same thing and book JQi ftom HKT-MEL-SYD or even find BKK-SYD direct on JQi.

For me an economy return trip for x 2 is much better than a business trip one-way for 1. I'd still need to pay the fuel surcharges. Just saying....

Im also thinking along these lines and going to attempt to book USA and Asia...

One of the very rare occasions where a QF Y international award fare (even at a 50% discount) makes any sense is for one way travel where one way revenue tickets are expensive.

SIN-MEL-SIN, 28,000 pts + ~ $470 AUD. Or I can buy a fare for ~ $565 AUD, so the 28K points saves a whopping $95.

Oh, not quite, for that extra $95 I would earn 9,100 pts, which I can almost use to get a Woolie's voucher worth $50, so the 28,000 points can save $45. How wonderful is that?:p

Slighty better if doing MEL-SIN-MEL for 28,000 pts + $290, but still < 1c per point.

If you assign any sort of value to the SC earned on the revenue fare, the value 'gap' closes even further (reducing the value from the points expended to almost nil)...

It's rare that a mid-long haul international QFF award on QF metal makes any general cost benefit based sense ... Even at half points cost.

Outrageous fuel surcharges and taxes going international w QF:(! (such a different experience to paying $7 to fly AA pts from JFK-DUS!)

The taxes make me depressed, I might be interested if the would offer 50% off J awards....
