Ah.....that is what we all want to know....

I tried to double dip a while back...without resigning as there was no fine print about "existing membership"......I received a new card but no bonus points or extra Qantas Club passess....despite their being no fine print.

Hence I noted with interest that they have now addedan existing membership line....I might try quoting this to them to see if I can gert the points on the last deal.

I did however start the 12 month free period again....and cancelled the old card when its 12 months were nearing.

I have an interesting scenario...

I signed up for a QF-branded Amex Premium card when the offer was for one year free, and only recently cancelled the card to avoid the annual fee.

What do you think my chance are of gettting the 30k points if I sign up again? Would I be considered a "new" customer?
If they look at your history, they may not approve the application. That is one of the risks of chasing credit card deals.

Fair enough. My credit history would only show two applications in the past 3 years, both of them sucessful, and nothing adverse.

Maybe its worth a shot, although I would be loathe to have a "credit rejected" entry put on my history...

But your Amex customer history will show accepting a First Year Free offer and then cancelling just prior to the annual fee being due, and then applying for a new card with a significant sign-up offer. They just may spot a pattern.

Yes they may spot a pattern...

But how much are you spending with them per month??

If it is healthy then I would imagine that they would still want the business. Their offers after all are designed to get people spending using their card.

If you don't havea card then they cannot make any money off you.

Whereas if you are just joining, taking the points and not spending then I would imagine that they would be fussier about signing you up again.

I was putting about 2k through the card each month, on average, so certainly wasn't a non-user.

I did manage to pay it off every month though, so they never made any money of out me directly (of course, with the merchant fees they would have made a bit, but I only ever used the card where I was not penalised for using Amex over Visa).

Well, I guess its worth a go, but maybe I should wait just a little bit longer, and see if that eases the pain...

Interestingly, when I cancelled the card, they did offer me to halve the annual fee on the card when it was due, so they did try and keep me (not that they tried very hard...)

I sure do wish I could get away with data sets giving 'patterns' with just two points :)

"mmmmmm, n=2, now time for the pub."

:)

i saw this offer was extended till august 7... the ad was on the herald sun website...

however now the ad is gone, so i was wondering if anyone knows where the link should be to apply for the card and still get this deal...

thanks

interesting discussion here. I am an existing Qantas AMEX Ultimate card holder. When i saw this offer, AND read the fine print, sure it says that offer is only applicable to new Qantas AMEX Premium card applicants.

My question is, being a Ultimate card holder and NOT a Premium card holder, am i therefore considered a new applicant for the Premium card? Or does the clause simply mean the offer is only for new AMEX customers (regardless of what card u hold/held)?

I signed up for the Premim card and received the card in the mail last week. This card is gonna cost me $195 for the first year (comes with the 30k points), i figured $195 for 30k points is pretty sweet. If they do not give me the points due to the fact that i was an existing AMEX cardholder, i would be really ticked off, and will cancel the card immediatey and get the pro-rated refund of my annual fee. No reason to keep the Premium card if i'm already holding the better Ultimate card.

.

No it says....

25,000 points offer only available to new customers who apply and are approved for the Qantas American Express Premium Card

I would read that as new customers to AMEX...who are approved for one particular AMEX product which in this case is the Premium card.

Just gave AMEX Premium card a call and spoke to a guy on the phone about the following:

1. I am an EXISTING customer of AMEX, holding the Qantas Ultimate card

2. I applied for a Qantas Premium card before the 31st July, and got it activated before the 31st July.

3. Am i still eligible to get the 30k points?

He said he was sure i am, but then put me on hold while he checked with his superiors.

This is what he came back with...

YES!

Doesn't matter if you're holding on to other Qantas/AMEX cards, as long as you are a new customer to the Premium card, and had applied for it and got it activated by 31st July, you're still eligible to get the points.

Just thought this might clear up some questions for everyone, including myself.

Then again, this is what he says over the phone. Who knows what'll happen at the end of the day. I guess only time will tell....will let you all know if i do indeed get the points in the next 8 weeks. I've got a big bill coming up and will reach the $1k minimum spend in abt a week...so i should see the points in my account by the end of September.

I'm happy to report that I got my bonus points of the first $1000 spent, and they were credited the next day, even though I was told it can take up to 2 months, so i'm very happy on that count!

However, I have 3 Amex cards and all 3 are almost maxed out currently due to buying a car through Amex. I got a call on Friday, firstly checking to see that the thousands of dollars charged to my account was in fact legit, OK great i thought its good that they're checking.

Secondly the lady told me my account is in credit review, because my income delcared with the recent application doesn't match my previous income, and also cos my cards are all near or at their credit limits. She then told me all my cards are suspended till i provide proof of income!!!

I never knew Amex were this strict! I told her, wouldn't Amex prefer me to not pay off in full each month (as i've always been doing) so that they get more interest, to which she didn't reply! Maybe they've got a scare from the US Sub-prime mortgage scene and are cracking down on how much credit they give to people?

Anyway I was pretty annoyed my cards were suspended till i fax them a bunch of documents proving that I do in fact earn X $, considering this was friday and I wasn't able to fax anything to them till monday, what a damn inconvenience!

I would suggest that most people look to use QFF points to travel domestic Oz and they don't look at AFF, FT or any other frequent flyer web site.

In that regard I believe the vast majority of FF point redemptions are at that 1¢ per point level.

So it's really only at the odds.

Myself, $195 for 30K points ... seems a no-brainer. ;)

...if you could use 30k points to actually get a flight anywhere. Given the fuel issue, there will only be less flights and more demand for them in the future. coupled with qantas selling the leftovers to card and hotel programs etc to boost revenues, the only use for those 30k would be in their merchandise store. Thats not a bad thing, lots of goodies in there, but you shouldnt have to pay to be a member of a mall program. Not with the Etihads and Emirates of this world banging on your competitive door.

I rarely use point for redemptions; Last month I redeemed nearly 200,000 QFF points for upgrades- I estimate the value of that redemption at ~9¢ per point.
