USA - a lot of banks charge an ATM fee so do your homework before you arrive to avoid those fees.

Thailand - almost all banks charge an ATM fee of 150 baht (approx $5). Apparently AEON Bank ATMs (Japanese) do not charge the fee but I haven't tested this yet. I usually take enough AU$ with me and the money changers (both at the airport and in Bangkok) have quite favorable exchange rates.

Read the thread, there's plenty of real life experience on how if done carefully, issues related to pre-paying be avoided.

There was no problem with my card being $3000 in credit a couple of weeks ago. Withdrew cash in Singapore at pretty good rate.

I would think that EVERY bank in the USA will charge you a "foreign" (as in, not one of ours) fee (which is the same as Oz really). Likely the cheapest you will get will be $2 - Bank of America for me I think using a debit card. Avoid Wachovia/Wells Fargo! - the screen in Florida told me it would charge me $5 - on top of the $2.20USD for the debit card - I went elsewhere naturally as i was not that desperate.

I can confirm that the AEON ones did not charge a fee when I used them last week. However, there really aren't very many of them in the city, so you may need to do a little bit of research to find one. I also heard that Government Savings Bank do not charge either, but I didn't get a chance to test this out. Anyone have any experience?

this is (happily) not the case. I posted previously in this thread of a bank that does NOT charge any fee. Its either chase or PNC. Whichever one it was did not have the usual 'you may get charged a fee' message.

Can also confirm the AEON bank in thailand does not charge (as recently as last week).

USA No, they all do not.

I cannot remember which ones did or did not now. But while some charged it at least several major banks did not. Just insert your card in several diferent ones and you will soon know.

In the states of California and Washington, the Chase ATMs had a fee, $2 or $3 can't remember exactly.

In Bangkok there is a government TBH150 fee (~$5) for using ATMs.

You pay this on top of any other bank charges.

I'm not sure that's correct, I was in Bangkok just a few weeks ago and some ATMs charged 150baht, but AEON ones did not, there were no fees at all.

Confirmed - no fees on AEOM banks.

The one in the TOPS complex on Silom Road however is now not clearly marked - just a small badge on it. If you are near that one (and there are only a few in Bangkok), you enter through the main doors of the mall and then walk up the stairs, and it's on the first floor. There are three cash machines all close by each other.

Used all over Hong Kong and Macau - no problems

Machines did all state a third part fee may apply - no mention of how much - looking at the statement - does not look like I was charged any fee at all.
