Re: 28° Mastercard Cash Advances while overseas [No more free cash advances from 1/1/

The only way to not have the fee is to use their online service centre. My card was due on Sunday and I had forgotten about it. I logged in to the service centre on the Saturday and used the "pay my bill" option. I had to put in my bank account details and then they took it from my account. Although it says 3 days, I had an email on the Sunday saying my payment was received.

I think it says "up to" 3 days, this is largely because we have a very slow interbank money transfer system in Australia. But this is about to change!

How do you pay the bill with no fee?
Automatic Direct debit, pay monthly balance in full. Its a piece of cake.

When do they take it? On the due date, or earlier?

I have absolutely no idea. I have never cared enough to check. The payment goes through and thats all that matters. It probably says so on the statement after the direct debit is set up, or on online banking.

I think the 28 degrees is one part of a comprehensive travel package.

There will be various combinations of the following, but I have three cards in total for overseas purposes.

28 Degrees for all credit card purchases.

Citi debit for cash out overseas. No transaction fees and rates almost on par with xe.com.

The third card is the ANZ Platinum. Low annual fee of $79, but a small spend of AUD250 for any overseas trip (and that can include the taxes fees and charges for an award booking) will get fully comprehensive medical, baggage, personal liability and delay insurance. The card comes with low excesses, and covers anyone up to 81 years of age. This latter point saved many thousands of dollars for my folks over the years.

would agree with MEL that a two or three pronged strategy needed. I am with the 28 Degrees for credit purchases +Citi debit Visa for o'seas cash plan myself. Some premium cards offer points and also claim no forex charges o'seas, but frankly can't be bothered switching cards just for that benefit. Although on my o'seas trips I do spend a large part of the budget on hotels obviously, I am not that obsessed with chasing points I am going to do that. Insurance cover also does nothing for me, as a (minor heart) pre-existing condition rules that out as added "value.

The one annoying feature of the 28 Degrees card I recently found out about (thx to new operators of the card, not GE Money as before?) was hitting me with a 95cent charge for each out of sync topup (one of $200, other of only $30) to cover an unwitting credit withdrawal by my partner o'seas. They don't charge this for monthly on due date autopayment (obviously, as this is to their advantage) so i found this particularly annoying. Any way they can slot you with a charge it seems to me, like every other financial institution.

sorry have since realised there is a separate thread whinge about the 95 cent charge and how to avoid it - now noted for hopefully rare future events

For very verey spasmodic Intl travellers who have no interest in chasing FF pts and do not want Credit Card am I correct in assuming that Citi Debit is about the best out there right now for those who only want to spend / withdraw their own cash??

Yeah. There's that one and one by ING (or similar, I forget which one). Both do much the same. But citi is just as good a choice as any. (Although if you don't already have one the application and set up process can be very slow and painful.)

I didn't take out the 28 degrees specifically for the wi-fi. But I activated it and it works really well!
I never find the wifi to be that great to be Honest. It has it's drawbacks like speed, also it won't stay connected and have to reconnect multiple times during a session. Having said that I can check email send a few pictures and imessage.

Ah yes. Well I guess 'works great' needs definition. The speed may be slow (I'm not an expert on those things). And I agree you might have to connect multiple times... but... it 'saved' me on more than one occasion by providing internet access in China, the USA and Thailand when airport versions weren't available. At LGA it actually worked for five hours even though the LGA's own wifi is limited to something like 30 minute or an hour or whatever.

I wouldn't use it in place of a formal network (airport, hotel, lounge) - but if none of those are available it can come in really handy.

Citi is fine, also there is HSBC Everyday Global Account which costs the same, and you can pre exchange forex which would make it even cheaper.
