Likewise, starting to look like a bottle shop at my place... :)

Ahh, you will fit right in. Now you have signed up (to AFF) don't be shy - feel free to post your experiences in the "nice wines" thread ;)

Re: 2015 Vintec wine cellar offer

Well mine (the big one) was delivered yesterday and is a nice bit of kit. Filled it and let it chill overnight, with the top at 6deg for white/champagne and the bottom at 12.
Given they said it could be up to 16 weeks - I was pleasantly surprised to get the call last week!

You might want to think about those temps.

Am getting the big boy tomorrow - am I correct in thinking around 13 for both sections - regardless of white / red?

Large fridges should be used for cellaring, not serving.

The lower the temp the harder you make the fridge work to maintain that temp.

There is no need to have it too cold.

I keep my reds at 15 and my whites/champagne at 12.

I hear the compressor in my fridges come on about once a day only.

I think it would depend on whether you are setting it up for cellaring, or serving.

Only cellaring - and will be predominately reds - will mostly likely have red/whites together in a zone

I'm happy with my 15 degrees for reds.

Vintec says 12 to 14 degrees:

'The recommended cellaring temperature is between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius. Whichever temperature you choose, the key is to remember that the temperature must be constant.'

The 6 degrees suggested earlier by Beena is unnecessary and I would caution against setting the temp so low as it may damage the wine over the long term.

.

Totally agree with this, plenty of evidence that consistency is much more important than exact temperatures.

I usually turn off my Kitchener during the Winter months, and set to 15 at other times. It lives in the garage where the temperature doesn't fluctuate much. I haven't had any problems so far.

How old is it?

Re: 2015 Vintec wine cellar offer

Thanks. I've been thinking of getting one. Have you been happy with it?

For my circumstances, which is a relatively compact space, yes without a doubt. I don't see how I could store what I have any other way.

I have a peltier 430, this model stacks two bottles deep. If I fill it (and I do), there are two effects :
1) larger pinot and sparkling bottles can be difficult to place and extract and I sometimes have to distribute them alongside thinner bottles. If I organised the shelves for a less compact format this would not be an issue.
2) The double depth means a database is essential because I can't see everything that I have.

However it keeps the bottles happy and that's the most important thing. I keep the ageing bottles separate from the others so I don't have to move them around, and every year I will go in with the database and move a few bottles around to rationalise it. For me the latter is no bad thing because I get to look at a few of them again!

If you have fewer bottles or more space, it may not be your cup of tea. However it is a very low power unit, the vibration is minimal, and in terms of bang for buck (dollar per bottle stored) it's good value.

Recently had to move the 110 bottle dual zone due to renovations

Am running both zones at 12

Notice the labels are bubbling - esp the Penfolds - any one experienced this - any ideas? Hasn't happened with previous fridges

I did have a lot of water starting to develop initially when the temp was accidentally set to 12 and could see how your problem would develope. Bump the temp to 16 and that should solve your problem

Cheers Dr - my fuzzy logic figured both zones at same temp (12) may reduce thermostat kicking in - will try

No issues with labels here using a low temperature

Temperature and humidty are two different things.
Obviously the lower the temperature, the less ability of the air to carry moisture, but the Vintec should be capable of removing that.

Your regular fridge is probably opened far more often than your wine fridge, and operates at ~4 C, yet the objects within usually aren't coated in moisture.

A higher temp may help. But I'd also check the seals, drainage etc. as well.
