That's the issue. If you are already in the maximum zone but still have a reasonable amount of distance remaining and not used all five stopovers, you can call to add seqments at only the cost of the change fee, surcharges, taxes and levies. Sadly it is a risk to call to do so.

I have no timetables going back that far. Qantas did fly that route a decade later in 1998. A timetable effective 29th March shows QF514, QF538 & QF544 were all SYD-BNE-CNS schedules.

QF81 is scheduled over 5 hours late. https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/QFA81 My experiences are that it stays open for delayed departures. However, given the notice I would not be surprised if they plan on only keeping the business lounge open.

I flew through SYD on a Wednesday in March and the upper lounge was open outbound ~9:30am & inbound ~4:30pm.

I'll check, but back then Qantas had many multi segment "direct" flight routes. Off the top of my head, QF400 was MEL-SYD-OOL with QF475 OOL-SYD-MEL the SYD/MEL segments being the first and last flight of the day between those ports respectively. QF610/QF637 were similar for MEL-BNE-CNS & vv.

If you are in and out and on QR on the one booking you can get a much reduced accommodation cost for up to 96 hours (4 nights). I am booked on a DONE4 so no fare hijinks here. When booking I allowed a week to see Doha ... turns out it's during the FIFA Arabic cup and hotel prices are sky high...

No - there can be greater automatic award availability for Qantas status members, and can vary depending on status levels. This can be seen when a Bronze members logs on and sees different availability than that shown to a statused member for the same search.
