IHG Hotels that recognise status

Hotel: InterContinental Sydney
When: January 8-9
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: Preferred Partner Rate at 20% off at $320ish/night
Booked: 1 King Classic
Received: 1 King Classic East Harbour View; booked on NYE and was upgraded on NYD
Amenity Offered: Drinks or 600 points. Got a single drink voucher which I used on a glass of chardonnay while waiting for my room to be ready as it needed to be inspected (arrived shortly after check-in time).

Also got given a selection of beers since my IHG profile said I liked good food and drink; not sure why. Maybe I've finally stayed here enough times or I now have an Annual Lounge Pass, or it was just too damn hot that day? (All the ice in the bucket had melted by the time I returned to the room)

Can't use your $25 Ambassador credit on the minibar any more.

Hotel: InterContinental Melbourne
When: January 13-14
Status: Diamond Ambassador (until the points got credited as a Platinum Ambassador two days later)
Rate: Cyber Sale Member Exclusive at $240ish/night plus 12% or 15% cashback via TopCashback
Booked: 1 King Classic
Received: 1 King Junior Suite
Amenity Offered: Drinks or 600 points. Got a single drink voucher which I used on a glass of sparkling wine while using my $25 Ambassador credit on half a dozen oysters from Alluvial.

First time using an Annual Lounge Pass for both hotels. I prefer the Sydney lounge compared to the Melbourne lounge; service, food and ambience (and views of course) is better.

Hotel: Crowne Plaza Sydney Burwood
When: January 17-18
Status: Platinum Ambassador
Rate: Best Flexible @ $213pn + $30pn for parking (multiple entry)
Booked: 1 King Bed Premium City View with Bathtub
Received: 1 King Bed Premium City View with Bathtub (maybe? I did get an email saying "your reservation has been upgraded" and the room was bigger than expected so possibly the junior suite. No change showing in app though.
Amenity Offered: 600 points, no drink vouchers offered (not a problem, we were going to a friend's for dinner).

I asked for, and was promised, a 1pm late checkout (no point requesting later since we'd driven up and the parking is only until 1pm). Despite this, I had a call at 11:30 and the trainee manager banging on the door 15 minutes later 🙄 the room smelt pretty noticeably of damp, but we aired it out with the balcony doors and it cleared okay, so might have just been the weather.

I think it's the plumbing 😩 is been like this for years
Amazing. Luckily for me, no plans for future stays, just a bit of a mattress run since I have a couple of longer IC stays planned that I'd like to get the double points offer on.

First time using an Annual Lounge Pass for both hotels. I prefer the Sydney lounge compared to the Melbourne lounge; service, food and ambience (and views of course) is better.
Both hotels lounges are a downgrade on the prior offerings. The rooftop SYD lounge was awesome, and often got access on reward stays as a regular when I should not have, back in the days of no benefits when using points.

Hotel: InterContinental Wellington
When: January 2026
Status: Platinum Ambassador
Rate: NZD $295/night (Visa cardholder rate)
Booked: 1 King Classic
Received: It's complicated. I think it was a 1 King Premium but if anything, it might be more of a downgrade. More on that later!

Bit of an odd stay to be honest, fortunately it was only two nights with a late arrival and early departure. If you look up rooms on the IHG website you'll see it starts with Classic as the cheapest, then Classic Low Floor and Premium. However looking at the pictures, the Classic and Classic Low Floor look renovated and much nicer compared to the Premium category. Well, a bit over a week out from my stay I saw the room type update in app to "1 King Premium" and wasn't sure what to make of it.

Arrival
I arrived just after midnight and check-in with the night team was fine; it was here that the receptionist noted that I hadn't been upgraded and offered compensation of $70 F&B credit or 10,000 points. The lack of an upgrade seemed odd as the hotel was not full according to the website, but anyway I took the points. He also couldn't see my milestone lounge pass in the system but arranged access after showing him the award on my phone.

Room
My room was on the 8th floor and although not as fancy as some newer ICs, it was fine. There was a large desk, ample storage space, minibar and a large TV with Chromecast. Complimentary tea and coffee was good and even included a few biccies, something I don't see a lot of these days. The view was nothing special, just looking onto other buildings on Featherston Street. Ambassadors are meant to receive complimentary mineral water and this has typically been commercially bottled water or filtered taps on each floor for guests to self-serve, however here they had two glass bottles on the table which I think they might have filled from the tap! A small jar of honey had been left on the table as a welcome gift, haven't had the chance to try it but I certainly hope it's worth it after the rigmarole having to declare and present it at Aussie customs 😂

The bathroom was fine with all the key amenities, including a scale. There was a cool window between the bathroom and bedroom which at the touch of a button can be made completely opaque. The shower had both a rainfall and regular showerhead however the water pressure was too low on the rainfall head for my liking. Housekeeping was quick and did a good job.

As for the room and upgrade/lack thereof, I'm not entirely sure but I think what's happening is that they are progressively renovating the rooms and all of the Classic ones are done but there are still Premium ones to go. So I could argue that in some ways they downgraded me by moving me from a renovated King Classic to an unrenovated King Premium. Given it was such a short stay I was happy to take the compensation points, but it's something to note if the upgrade is important to you.

Club InterContinental
The Club is located on the 7th floor and has beautiful harbour views. There are a variety of seating options however the nicest spots are by the windows. F&B presentations include breakfast from 6.30-10.30am on weekdays / 6.30-11am on weekends, afternoon tea from 2-4pm and evening drinks and canapés from 5-7pm.

Breakfast consisted of cooked-to-order eggs cooked supplemented by a small buffet of mostly cold and a few hot items. I got the eggs benedict with salmon and it was superb, the coffee was just ok.

For afternoon tea I arrived in the last half hour of service and I think they had run out of clean tiered trays because they just plated my set. It was a generous set consisting of two sandwiches, a quiche and three sweet items - teas were from T2 and although not much of a tea fan, my Gorgeous Geisha tea was lovely.

The evening service was the busiest - the food offering was entirely self-serve with one hot canapé (teriyaki tofu) and two cold items (watermslon salad and poached prawn on mini toasts) supplemented by a selection of cheeses, cold cuts, crudités etc. The drinks menu was extensive with five coughtails, two mocktails, a broad selection of NZ wines, local and international beers and standard spirits. Over the course of the evening I had a gin and tonic, a non-alcoholic beer which turned out to be Corona Zero and two coughtails, the Botanic Garden and the Harbour Lights - the coughtails were the highlight. Staff regularly offered top-ups and came around just before 7pm for last call, they were happy to double park you before the end of service. It was a nice service overall but some suggestions for improvement would be to offer a hot plated canapé to each table, introduce more local spirits (the G&T featured Humdinger gin which was the only NZ spirit on the menu) and in a city known for its craft brewing scene, surely they can do better than a Corona Zero for the non-alcoholic option!

It should be noted that this particular Club InterContinental has been awarded "Oceania's best" on numerous occasions and going by the view and the friendliness of the staff, I can certainly understand that. Some small things that could be improved but still a nice experience overall.

F&B
The hotel has quite a lot of dining options, in addition to 24-hour room service they also have The Lobby Lounge, the casual all-day Two Grey and the more upmarket GPO. I stopped by The Lobby Lounge to have a light dinner and use my Ambassador F&B credit and welcome drink voucher, I got a club sandwich (NZD $36) which was really good, probably the best thing I ate at the hotel! I'd note that the Ambassador F&B credit here is NZD $25 which is on the lower side considering it's meant to be the equivalent of USD $20. For comparison the IC in Auckland offers NZD $30 and all the Aussie ICs do AUD $25. Anyway, NZD $11 for a club sandwich and beer after the credit and drink voucher is a steal in anyone's book 😊

Amenities
There is a well-equipped gym and a large indoor pool. The hotel is going through refurbishment and the public areas look nice.

Location
Very convenient being about halfway between Te Papa and the Beehive, the cable car is just a few minutes walk away as is the waterfront. Wellington is a very walkable city. If you're looking for a dining recommendation I can highly recommend Graze Wine Bar in Kelburn, a few minutes walk from the cable car station at the top of the hill. Phenomenal experience at the chef's counter!

Final Thoughts
I had an issue with the minibar which I spotted when reviewing my bill on the TV - looks like they did the inventory reconciliation on the second day of my stay rather than prior to check-in and as a result they replenished a missing mixed nuts and M&Ms consumed by the prior guest and charged $18 to my room. I advised the receptionist at check-out and he waived the charges without a fuss, however I did find the "guest denied" comment next to the reversal on my invoice kind of funny! Ideally they should get these things right in the first place as it leaves a bad taste.

My overall feelings on the property are mixed, happy to return but I wouldn't pay a premium for it. I get the feeling they are trying to keep costs to a minimum. Brand loyalty and my lounge pass are what made me pick this hotel but I think I would have been just as happy and saved a bit of money staying elsewhere, like the Doubletree across the road.

Thanks. Stayed there a few times but the update is useful. Will be there in mid-March for a couple of visits.

Hotel: Intercontinental Brisbane
When: February 2-3
Status: Platinum Ambassador
Rate: Best Flexible @ $322
Booked: 1 King Classic
Received: 1 King Classic High Floor Club Access
Amenity Offered: 600 points or drink vouchers. Accepted the vouchers, got the points anyway (same as a previous stay). Also availed myself of 4pm checkout and $25 AMB F&B credit

I had promised myself I would wait until the renovations were well progressed before I stayed again - this hotel was overdue for a refresh long before it left the Hilton stable - but a family emergency meant I needed somewhere I could stay put long enough to find out if a loved one was being transferred to the PA for surgery or if we needed to schlep out to the boonies, get some work done while we waited, and potentially extend the room several nights if they were moved down. I figured my best bet (while booking a hotel from gate 9 at CBR) was the combination of high status and potentially lower occupancy would give us the most options, so the IC was it. 4pm late checkout was no drama and they were happy to confirm the room could be extended for several nights if needed (we didn't).

The staff here have been great both times; after a brief fluster when I enquired whether the upgrade to Club level actually included Club access, the desk agent was ready to just grant it anyway. I didn't need it, just wanted to know what our breakfast options were, so declined. We did use the Ambassador F&B credit on dessert to accompany the free drinks before crashing out.

The Club room provided was a definite improvement on the High Floor (level 16) room I stayed in last - the air conditioner is still old, but not actually original, and was quiet and effective. Beds and pillows have seen better days, and of course no power points near the bed at all. Spacious and meticulously clean though which is all I really needed.

ETA: small mercies, this stay should attract both double nights and double points bonuses - will see when it posts.

Hotel: InterContinental Auckland
When: January 2026
Status: Platinum Ambassador
Rate: NZD $440/night (Visa cardholder rate)
Booked: 1 King Classic
Received: 1 King Classic City View (one-category upgrade)

This was my second stay at the Auckland IC albeit only a short one-night visit this time, the Ambassador late check-out and annual lounge pass made staying here an easy choice.

Arrival
Pre-arrival comms were good with an email from the hotel to confirm preferences and arrival time. I arrived at about 7pm after taking the Northern Explorer scenic train from Wellington (highly recommended by the way!) - the check-in agent was helpful and noted the hotel was almost at capacity due to visiting cruise ships so it was just the one-category upgrade for me.

Room
My room was on the 11th and highest floor of the hotel and was not just a pure city view but also had a partial harbour view looking towards Viaduct Harbour and the Harbour Bridge in the background, if anything I preferred this view to the full harbour view room I had on my last visit! The rooms have all the modern amenities you could ask for and the layout makes good use of the space. Waiting for me on the table were some small cakes as a welcome amenity. The bed was super comfortable, the TV had cable channels as well as Chromecast and the air-conditioning worked flawlessly. There is a fully stocked minibar and in lieu of bottled water they have carafes which you can refill at the Brita tap near the lifts on each floor.

The bathroom was well laid out with all the key amenities including a scale. Shower pressure and water temperature were excellent.

Club InterContinental
Due to my short visit and arrival just after evening canapés had ended I only got to experience breakfast and afternoon tea at the club. The club is located on the 3rd floor and is a large space with a variety of seating options and partial harbour views. The lounge is open from 6.30am-10.30pm with the main F&B presentations being breakfast from 6.30-10.30am, afternoon tea from 2-4pm and evening drinks and canapés from 5-7pm, with light refreshments available outside of these times.

For breakfast there is a small but pleasant continental buffet table supplemented by what I think is one of the best curated lists of a la carte breakfast items you'll find anywhere, I think regardless of your tastes you'll find something you like! I ordered the house smoked pastrami eggs benedict, which I had enjoyed on my last visit as well as the nasi goreng and to drink I got a flat white. It wasn't at capacity but the lounge was pretty busy with small groups from the various cruises. The coffee took long enough but the wait for the hot items was excessive, it was half an hour before the food came out. The staff apologised profusely for the long wait and I heard them telling a table which arrived later that there was only one chef out back hence why it was taking a while. Not sure if it was due to the influx of guests, the fact it was a public holiday or what but ultimately it was too long a wait and it's something the hotel should plan for. Taste-wise though, both dishes were excellent.

The afternoon tea service is a tiered stand with two finger sandwiches, two sweet items and a savoury scone with butter. The items are mixed up regularly but for my visit it was a cheese scone, raspberry cake, chocolate peanut butter cup and for the sandwiches it was chicken with brie and salami. All the items were good but personally I think they should ditch the savoury scone and replace it with something more traditional.

F&B
Advieh is the hotel's main restaurant/bar and is highly regarded by locals - I'd had a disappointing experience on my last visit but thought I'd give it another go for lunch this time and they certainly redeemed themselves. I had the handcrafted haloumi to start followed by the lamb neck shawarma, both were excellent and the presentation is very photoworthy. Welcome drink amenity vouchers are redeemed at the restaurant and there is a list of wines, beers and non-alcoholic drinks to choose from. My two course lunch with drinks came to NZD $33 after the drink vouchers and NZD $30 Ambassador F&B credit were taken into account, which was good value.

Amenities
There is a well-equipped gym located next to the club but it's a windowless space, if the weather is good a walk/run around the area is much nicer.

Location
Excellent for both business guests and tourists with transport connections close by and heaps of restaurants and attractions. Due to the busy location there is no driveway, just a couple of spots out front for a taxi/uber to stop in so it can be a bit tricky at busy times but they seem to manage ok.

Final Thoughts
A good stay apart from the long wait at breakfast. Pricing is at the higher end compared to the many other IHG options in the city but with the additional Ambassador / lounge perks I'd say it's worth it.
