What I ate today - the food thread

Catching up with former work colleagues at Patterson Lakes - typical pub food but always enjoyable.
We meet here a few times a year as it is halfway for each of us and staff know to give us a quiet spot so we can hear.

Couldn’t park near our usual Vietnamese restaurant today so went to the Maroochydore Plaza to the reopened Nyugyn brothers. Same as we remember with Mrsdrron having the vermicelli salad with lemongrass beef and I with crispy crackling pork.

Both look like decent serves of real food rather than 80% vermicelli in some cafes.

Back to the Tziki Bar today for lunch. Although Stav’s is the same owner, menu and food but much closer to us it has one major difference. Flies in their hundreds. So essentially the same meal but in peace. Staff still remember what we eat and do. A large glass of Sav Blanc for Mrsdrron and a pint of the pale ale from the craft brewery next door.

We shared a bowl with lemon potatoes and lamb plus a roasted cauliflower salad..

Beautiful and not a scrap left.

Back at my favourite Thai place in ADL. Rocked up with a work mate. No reservation. Restaurant was packed. Lucky to score a table for 2.

IMG_4177.jpeg

A pot of tea (as always) and in a fancy tea pot.

IMG_4178.jpeg

Had the mozzarella balls with chilli, picked veggies, fried and fresh basil. Absolute rockstar of a dish. 5 decent sized servings.

IMG_4181.jpeg

Went with the tofu and veggies chilli stir fry. Vegan style with roti and jasmine rice. The stir fry was a tad salty for my liking, but the rice made it better. The chilli hit was big in this dish.

Work mate went with ousters, stir fried beef and rice.

Amazing feed and excellent customer service. Flawless customer service. A must visit when in ADL. Recommend booking a table before going.

AFF Annual Gathering, 21 Nov - 23 Nov, MEL.

Dinner. Had a special meal request and well served.

Entree was grilled tofu in a bed of olives, green beans, cherry tomatoes, micro greens.

IMG_4077.jpeg

Mains was roasted cauliflower in a yellow/red curry based sauce. Loved this dish. One might even say that this dish was the envy of the table I was seated on 🤣

IMG_4079.jpeg

Gelato ice cream - mango, passion fruit and strawberry flavours.

IMG_4083.jpeg

Loved all 3 dishes. The cauliflower was the clear winner for me. I love cruciferous veggies, so easy win for me. The tofu dish was a good starter. Clean dish with crisp veggies.

AFF Annual Gathering weekend - MEL.

It was a busy and foodie weekend. I used to live in MEL a few years ago. I took this weekend to revisit some of the places that I used to frequent once upon a time.

Gol-gappe at a local eatery in King Street, MEL.

IMG_4041.jpeg

A fried and puffed dough that is cracked open, ever so slightly, filled with mashed potato, chickpea and various masala, then filled with spicy, minty, tangy water. Mouth watering evening treat.

Followed by a lovely meal at Flora, Indian restaurant near Flinders Street train station. Enjoyed an Indian thali after quite a few years.

IMG_4048.jpeg

Next morning, a fellow AFF’er introduced me to a traditional Andhra style restaurant (Jaathara). Had traditional idly, dosa filled with masala and fried dough balls (forgot to take pics).

Dinner at The Kathmandu momo house, CBR.

IMG_4015.jpeg

New Nepalese place opened in CBR civic. Wanted to give this place a shot, so went in one evening after work.

Nice ambiance. Very Nepalese. There’s live music on Friday’s and Saturday’s. I’m not a huge fan in live music in restaurants.

Started with little savoury pancakes, served with a spicy chutney and fresh veggies. Good entree. Very good chutney, nice spice.

IMG_4013.jpeg

Followed by mains. Asked for a recommendation from the wait staff and was recommended the Nepali khana set. The word Khana means “meals”. Went with the vego option.

A decent portion meal. Depending on how much rice one likes, might need another serve of rice (which is extra $). Otherwise a filling meal. This meal comes with papad, a dessert and a variety of curries and pickles. Very traditional style Nepalese fare.

IMG_4014.jpeg

I also ordered a side of roti.

A visit to Olive, ADL CBD on my last visit to ADL. A must visit IMHO when in ADL CBD. Amazing and very accommodative customer service and great food. Nice and quiet decor (except for a group of rather loud patrons in my last visit).

IMG_3924.jpeg
As always when I visit Olive, went with their set menu. The kitchen is quite accommodating with various dietary needs. We were a group of 3 (1 carnivore, 1 herbivore (moi) and 1 herbivore with a serious dislike to eggplants - I mean, what, who doesn’t like eggplants - anyways, each to their own eh 🤣)

The wait staff on our table was simply superb. She was very patient with our ordering. The herbivore that doesn’t like eggplants had to clear a few things before they could partake in the set menu. And as a table we requested changes to a few items as well - just to make sure that there’s enough for everyone.

It took a good 10 minutes worth of back and forth with the kitchen on the customisation and all the customisation were honoured with a smile. Did I say about their amazing customer service 🥹

Anywhooo - the meal started with focaccia bread with hummus and chickpeas.

IMG_3925.jpeg

Followed by watermelon carpaccio.

IMG_3926.jpeg

Followed by fried feta

IMG_3927.jpeg

Followed by iceberg wedge

IMG_3928.jpeg

Followed by roasted cabbage

IMG_3931.jpeg

Followed by eggplant parmi

IMG_3929.jpeg

Roasted cauliflower (for the herbivore who didn’t like eggplant)

IMG_3930.jpeg

Followed by coconut ice cream (not pictured)

I have been here twice and will definitely be coming back.

Coco Nine, Kingston foreshore, CBR. Thai restaurant.

IMG_3838.jpeg

Started with veggie spring rolls.

IMG_3841.jpeg

Followed by fried eggplant with a side of fresh chilli.

IMG_3840.jpeg

Followed by spicy vego and tofu stir fry with rice.

IMG_3842.jpeg
IMG_3843.jpeg
Loved the spring rolls. The curry was good (6/10). The service was slow for a weekday evening. The restaurant was 80% filled and it seemed understaffed. Some orders in our table took forever - sometimes simple orders (say a coke took about 15 mins). Food was good though. I’d do a takeaway next time.
