Please take out Travel Insurance

It doesn't actually say they didn't have travel insurance though did it (or did I miss something)

They are asking for help with medical costs. It is very unusual to buy TI to USA with limited medical cover. Radio station jock suggested that normal TI would not cover massive costs like this which is incorrect

I read yesterday they did have travel insurance so I’m not sure why the appeal is based on meeting those costs.

I can only guess that due to distance, people are just throwing money at the situation as part of their support but a $300K gofundme? Im glad Im not in the same situation as I doubt I have friends to cough up that much but then again, I know we're over insured when we travel (I dont trust credit card insurance).

I hope she has a speedy recovery.

Perhaps the article should say that the family staying in NYC for 3 months, or however long it takes , would need a lot of financial assistance.

I don’t think they have TI. Usual TI would include unlimited medical and travel companion cover so that travel companion can have accom costs reimbursed while staying at bedside of sick family member overseas.

I’ve never taken out CC TI.
What’s usual coverage on CC TI for medical?

Very sad

Yes but would need to be upfront about where the money is going.

ICU care for something like this would be around USD $10k per day. Then Add in operating theatre doctors other professional etc. This one could be over USD $1 million before the 3 months is up...

Usually for massive costs like this uninsured patients often get a discount or a write off depending on circumstances

It’s probably best not to be too literal, no need to be so specific at this time. The people who started the fund raising may just be family, and friends, and well wishers trying to help without being seasoned travellers and not know execatly where the diverse costs are coming from. There’s an urgency in this sort of occurrence.

Yes GFM is usually setup and supported by good people wanting to help.

But generally speaking it’s very sad that people still don’t buy TI. The financial costs can be massive and adds an extra unnecessary emotional strain on family/friends.

Medical cover is already unlimited. How can you over insure?
I qualify for credit card insurance and I still purchase travel insurance plus work insurance benefits as well.

Edit. I know I can only claim once but I dont like being screwed over in the fine print

We do the same. Depending on what is happened, I might claim on either one (but not twice) as sometimes the CC Insurance has better claim options than the paid one.

Whilst (assuming they have it) TI would cover the direct medical expenses, there are a lot of outside expenses which TI may not cover. For example for that 3 months it's unlikely the husband will be able to work whilst in the US, yet expenses such as rent or mortgage will continue.

My salary continuance & income protection (work benefit) kicks in after 3mths of being out of work and even then, its at 75% of income so even if they had it, they have to qualify first.

It does indicate they need the funds for various things including medical and rehabilitation expenses. $300k would seem a lot of money for four months of expenses, even including a mortgage.

My annual TI policy also gets QF points on its own along with the credit card points.

Wouldn't ever consider a trip without TI.

I knew a person whose mother had a stroke in Russia. The TI got her home with paramedics and J seats removed from the plane to fit the stretcher.

Cost was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and all covered.

If you can't afford travel insurance you can't afford to travel.
