IFE worth USD250

I just flew LHR-HKG on a CX flight; the IFE was non functioning ( other than the moving map ) ; on arrival at HKG I was compensated with USD250 of CX vouchers . Pretty generous compensation for the non provision of a service I wouldn't have used if it had been available methunked

It's really good to hear some good stories though and not just the bad ones.

This type of compensation could/would send QF broke if they applied it to the AVOD :!:

Which cabin were you travelling in Dave??and was the whole cabin non functioning or just yr seat/row...I agree 250 is nice compensation but i would have my doubts (pls refute if wrong) but I'm sure CX would baulk at giving away vouchers for 250 to nearly 400 pax.Again the voucher is great for regular travellers but most in the Y cabin tend to be infreq international travellers so the reward may be compensation may be something that will never be redeemed..

The last time my IFE went down on SQ I was offered an A$75 Krisshop duty free voucher. Oh well, better than nothing.

The captain announced before departure from LHR that it wasn't working and rather than wait for it to be fixed , he was gonna head off to make sure that we got to HKG on time and that noone missed connections. He stated that there would be compensation available at HKG

I was impressed; that was a pretty decent compensation for lack of a service that I wasn't going to use ( the moving map was working which is all I use anyway ) . I would hope that all got the same compensation since it was the same service that was unavailable

thanks Dave. Its reassuring i suppose that carriers other than the red rat have trouble with IFE...I suppose losing yr slot departure ex london is actually more expensive than 250 per pax

Being at the pointy end I presume you'd get more compo than others. Maybe Economy got $50, Business got $150 and First got $250 or something like that.

i am impressed they were upfront about that from the start. so many times on QF i have had AVOD troubles, followed by a couple of hours of fiddling from the crew, who usually let slip at the end that "yeah it wasnt working on the way up either!". this really gets to me - if it isnt working then just tell me so i can get on with some work or just get to sleep.

the other thing that irritates me is when they decide after 30mins of AVOD being on, and the usual numerous issues in spots throughout the aircraft that they need to reboot the entire system, which can take up to 45mins. why dont they just do this as a normal procedure everytime the plane is on the ground? it would make it more stable and ready to go straight away, and reduce chances of needing a reboot in the air. (i might be stupid in thinking this feasible - perhaps they cant due to auxillary power issues?)

finally i wish QF would turn on the IFE much sooner after takeoff. as soon as the seatbelt sign is off, get it going. sometimes they take ages to turn it on...

Might have something to do with QF having a captive market. CX has to compete with all other airlines, to, from and through asia. Whereas QF has a monopoly on full service Domestic flights in Australia with FF points and status, thus resulting in many of their customers chosing to fly QF purely due to status, points and FF membership. Also with the restriction and thus pretty full US/Australia flights why do they need the expense of fixing the IFE.

Personally if Singapore or Air NZ offered a status match, I'd be flying *A on all my international flights from here on in.

i think AVOD only available in F + J on CX isn't it? so that would mean less load on the controller and less bandwidth issues.
