Looking back to the golden days of travel before the jet age.....

I'll be attaching my private railway car (the private jet of the steam age) onto a train on November 14 and AFFers are welcome to join me for the ride south of Sydney to Thirlmere for a pub lunch.

Nov 14
Departs Sydney Terminal (correct name for country platforms at Central) at 10am
Arrives Thirlmere 12.05pm
Departs Thirlmere 3.50pm and arrives back at Sydney Terminal 5.48pm if on schedule.

The pub at Thirlmere is rudamentry but only 20m from the station.

There is no cost, but I do ask people to kick something into the can each trip which I pass on to Vinnies before Christmas.

If you're interested, let me know.

Matt
PS, of course like sitting in the lounge, refreshments will be on board.

Now to convince Mrs munitalP to let me go to Sydney that weekend :)

Oh man!

Sounds so good but I'll be overseas at the time. :(

Have fun, though.

So let me get this right... you (we) will have an entire train carriage going from Sydney to a pub down south for lunch, then coming back that afternoon?

Doing this trip for lunch with a bunch of AFF'ers sounds almost too good to be true?

Great invitation!

I too would be very interested ... but I'm already booked to go to Longreach that weekend. :-|

O.M.G.

You have your own private car? That is the most amazing and awesome thing I have seen all year.

I am scheduled to be in Orlando then, but am seriously tempted to fly back to SYD for that afternoon.

Awesome.

:):):)

Absolutely awesome.Always loved trains.Have to fly up from DPO for the weekend.Just tell mrsdrron it is to see the grandkids.;)
Well she will read this post anyway and find out. Will definitely think hard about coming.

Vec,

Yes, it is as you say. There is actually a train that day for the public hauled by a steam locomotive from the Power House Museum going to Thirlmere, I've booked my car on the back......like flying, we all like public transport it's just the public bit we don't like.

If there is interest no reason why it can't be done again for those who miss out this time.

I am too....but I'm going to be in Japan. I have to cancel my LRE trip....and damn it is going to cost me a pretty penny for the QF cancellation.

I am scheduled to be in Orlando then, but am seriously tempted to fly back to SYD for that afternoon.

Flying back from Japan to SYD in a hunch is a little easier than from Orlando, but that would still be a bit too ambitious to fly in and back for a day. :) Besides, my friend who is moving to Japan may want me to join him in Kansai during that week.

Ahh, so the consist is a bit more than the two car train shown in some of the pictures!!

Yup, a steam locomotive, extra water tanker to supply the loco as it can use around 100l per km, 6 passenger cars then another private car and then my own car, plus a diesel loco for back up. The train is running as a Christmas Special.

Sometimes I hire a locomotive and run my own train, but the Power House Museum doesn't run its engine too often so thought it might be a good ride.

If you're going to Longreach then I must be too. Bugger, as it sounds like a lot of fun and I'd have been very keen.

That's awesome. I'd love to do this, as would my father in law.

Interested!! Is that the same flight that bobs up on the QF site as QF268 (alleged to be operated by Qantas)?
