How good is the Qantas First Class lounge in Sydney?

A couple of weeks ago LHR T3 had atrocious food but on the upside a plentiful supply of Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle, never seen anything like this in the SYD F Lounge

Jealous!
I went through LHR T3 Galleries F twice in the past month and they had Taittinger Millesime 2005 and 2006... different one each time

Many comments on this - the MEL (when it is open) First Lounge does not get as crowded as SYD's, the service is more personal and attentive.

There are also reports from those into Massages/Facials/Treatments etc that the chances of being able to book one are better in MEL.

Finally it's closer to the original VLA gates with direct lift access to the gate for QF9.

Currently sitting in MIA Admiral's Club en route JFK-SXM (Saint Martin/Sin Maarten) for a few days (then to Turks & Caicos next week - what are the workers doing?!), with a single miserable drink voucher in my hand. Pleasant enough surroundings in that typical AC style but that's where it ends.

SYD F is hard to top all-round IMHO.

CCR is seriously underwhelming - did I say SERIOUSLY underwhelming?

QF is hard to beat for champagne and wine selection. Choices are eclectic.

EK F in DXB is palatial but only Moët NV?! Not good enough! Same at CX Pier in HKG.

We are spoiled for choice here with 2 excellent F lounges in MEL & SYD.
Not many countries have 2 lounges equally as good in 2 different cities.

Food wise Syd F is a 1000x better then BA LHR T5 F.

.

I don't believe our dining here in Aus has in any manner any fear points of being inferior to any pommie offerings.

This reflects the whole cultural gamut of how we best integrate a society of immigrants but I shall leave that to the social theorists.

SYD does not have a First Class lounge. There is a First lounge for one Oneworld Emeralds and First Class customers are also welcome.

I would have to say the SYD First Lounge is quite nice and a pleasant place to spend ~90 minutes before a flight.

I also like the BA LHR T5 First lounge. The First lounges in HKG are OK but are extremely boring.

The EK F lounge at DXB (A gates) is very large, well staffed and has very good quality food (in my limited experience of one visit so far). This would be the best lounge I have been in to date and about the only real positive of the QF/EK alliance.

The QF F lounge at SYD can get very crowded at times and the food can be of questionable quality as I was served 'raw' fish the last time I was there (and it was not meant to be raw.....). Getting a table is a real challenge (you can obviously order anywhere within the lounge but at the table is better).

The QF F lounge at MEL is better than SYD IMHO as I was able to get a table, a nice seat after dining and they cooked the food last time I was there. Service was very slow however.

I used the renovated CX F Wing lounge at HKG for the first time yesterday. Nice outlook over gates 1 to 4 (same as previously available and handy as CX171 to PER departed from gate 1). I like the very dark decor they have gone for. 'The Haven' was a bit too cafeteria style in arrangement for my liking (if they are looking for an upmarket feel). Food was good but not the same range available as in the EK or QF lounges.

The BA T5 F lounge at LHR is not too bad either. As with the CX lounge, food was good but not the same range available as in the EK or QF lounges.

I put the SYD Flounge at the top as much for sentimental reasons as anything... love the spa, food, wines, etc... such a good way to start a trip

I find MEL Flounge nice, but somewhat smaller than SYD

Love renovated CX F Wing - Mrs Paddy and I spent a good 90 mins rejuvenating in a cabana :) and love the restaurant breakfast, especially juices.

Paddy Jnr and I will be passing through DXB early on 26 Nov - transferring from QF1 to EK7 so we'll have a good 2 hours in their FLounge, which I'm looking forward to immensely. :)

For the smokers amongst us the Emirates F lounge in Dubai has a killer cigar bar which gives it the edge.

I think the QF F Lounges in SYD and MEL are pretty impressive. I especially like that you can order from an a la carte menu rather than there just being buffet food. I quite like The Wing in HK although the food is not as good as QF F Lounges. The EK F Lounge in DXB seemed quite good but I only got to sample the breakfast menu. The QR F Lounge in DOH was also impressive. Not sure about the alcohol on offer in any of them as I don't really drink.

I have not visited either SYD or MEL F lounges but it seems for next year to LAX I have a choice, I could either fly the day before to SYD and jump on QF11 or leave from MEL on QF93.
Is the SYD F lounge that much better than the MEL lounge that I should route my trip through SYD ?

It won't cost me anymore in flights, just a nights accomodation, though I haven't been to SYD for a while so wouldn't mind that.
Suggestions ?

My preference is MEL in a "first among equals" race. MEL whilst smaller has everything SYD does. However, because it is smaller the staff are able to offer a truly personalised service.

Love the cigar bar in DXB! Have to say though, the food in CX Wing F lounge is better than SYD or MEL F lounge imo.

... ?
Go through SYD for QF11 - solely because the afternoon menu is more extensive. (Make sure you connection time is of at least three hours.)

FWIW, all things being equal the relative quietness of the MEL lounge over SYD wins. e.g. If it were a choice of QF1 over QF9, I'd take the MEL departure.

Great advice. This is what we do for every OS flight....even if it's only across the ditch.

Our next one is in a few weeks......QF8 and then QF11. Perfect for plenty of Flounging time :D

Not sure I'll bother doing this for the newly timed Asian flights.....excluding CX100/BA16 of course;)

The MEL F lounge is comparable to SYD F lounge and I would not waste money on 1 nights accommodation just to try it out.
