Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I suspect with Frankfurt it may have to do with QF needing to shift its air rights from QF5/6 to a codeshare... All of these can take a while.

...but the QF code has been on EK flights to FRA since the partnership went live in April, so I doubt it is that.

Also, the problem is occuring ex-DUS, HAM and MUC. I can only imagine it is an issue with advance availability of EK flights. QF are at 355 days (I think?), not sure where EK sits in that equation. Having said that I can generate a fare through the EK website on the EK code but QF metal (ie. flight number 5xx_) on the selected dates so maybe not?!

EK is loaded 339 in advance days in the GDS, I have a QF codeshare from FRA in August

Bit of chatter over on FT that the QF9/10 is not doing very well and will be dumped Emirates tie-up fails to boost Qantas performance - Travel & Hospitality - ArabianBusiness.com

Had a great chuckle with the last few paragraphs......

“The glaring weakness of the Qantas to Asia offering, of having no control over any full service on carriage beyond Singapore or Hong Kong or Shanghai is obvious,” Crikey journalist Ben Sandilands wrote on Sunday.

“If Qantas seriously expects such traffic to down gauge to the Jetstar [Qantas’ low-cost sister carrier] experience at Singapore or Hong Kong it is unworthy of credibility.

“It has not just handed much of its Australian presence on the Europe routes on a platter to its competitors, but provided Singapore Airlines through Virgin Australia and Cathay Pacific on its ownsome [sic] golden opportunities they are not ignoring.”

For the statistics noted in the article about the percentage of passengers flying Qantas falling, would an EK ticketed passenger flying QF be counted as an EK passenger or QF passenger?

As long as QF remain a part of OW - I'll stick with them due to DOM flights, easy point earn and easy redemption on CX, BA, AA.

The tie up with EK doesn't bother me however, the lack of option thru Asia is just dumb.

IMHO QF is stuffed if VA pull on long pants & signed up with *A

That would seriously test my loyalty if they did join *A.

I did MEL QF9 DXB QF1 LHR QF2 DXB QF10 MEL in April, QF9 on the way there was full as was QF1 (start of April). Coming back (end of April) both flights had about 200 pax total each (according to the QF operations sheet that the AA club in LHR had on their reception desk).

I'm in the same boat as well. I think I've mentioned here before that VA not being in an alliance is one of the few factors that stopped me from switching to them (or SQ, given my base).

I am surprised at this having flown QF9/10 three times since DXB route started: J is full every time and could not get my preferred seats 2 months out on 1 leg.

This, if true, smells like the QF29/30 MEL-HKG-LHR flights: always heavily booked but stopped "because of poor demand for these flights by passengers". If QF are not doing well internationally it is because they do not fly anywhere (much), try to route everyone via SYD and, for many ports, no longer offer flights on QF metal or at convenient times.

Finally the new route is not good: the flight time DXB-LHR is too short: I arrived severely jet-lagged; the menu is culturally inappropriate for most PAX (and is not as nice as previously); the London crew are often fatigued on the DXB-LHR sector (2 back of clock sectors with short layover) so not always up to standard; and QF have not sorted out supply and aircraft restocking issues.

If QF want a successful international service then they need to provide a service that passengers want to use not what management want to provide. IS AJ deliberately trying to sabotage QF international? Why link up with the airline that has stated that it wants to be the dominant airline to/from Australia? And then hand it most of the routes from Australia to EUrope & UK?

Which is the quietest time of the year. Personally I would take what Ben Sandilands and FT say with a grain of salt really. Sounds like wishful thinking on behalf of them rather than reality, especially as mentioned the time since Qantas moved LHR via DXB it has been the traditional low travel time, not helped by Easter being early. Now it is summer in Europe tt is now getting on for the peak season.

It's been a couple of months I would think Qantas is going to give it a bit more of a chance than that before talk of cutting the route.

Ain't that the plain / simple truth ?

"Why" is indeed the question ?

So what EUROPEAN routes (or any route for that matter) has Qantas handed to EK? From what I recall none actually. Sure they have dropped FRA, but no in favour of Emirates and they still fly to London. They also still fly to Singapore, but yes have dropped ONE PER-SIN flight, ONE PER-HKG flight and ONE ADL-SIN flight which ran a couple days a week, and last time I looked SIN and HKG were in Asia not Europe. So note really sure what routes Qantas has handed to EK.

Seeing that Sandilands mentioned VA In the article, how is there any difference in their current approach?

I would argue that the 28000 passengers a month ex ADL and 99000 a month ex PER to SIN last Jan had a component that were travelling to the UK and beyond now gifted to EK in the most part. 99000 SIN passengers (circa 3193 daily) but cannot fill two A330s ex PER, interesting ;)

You would argue. But not sure were your figures come from but there is no way Qantas (and remember this discussion is about Qantas) was carrying 28000 a month from Adelaide considering they had, what 4 or 5 A330's a week, and likewise Perth didn't carry 99000 a month to Singapore and beyond either as that would be over 3000 passengers a day. In fact I didn't realise there were 10 300+ a/c a day flighing PER-SIN. Lets not of course not forget that Singapore is not Europe, whilst yes some of those passengers may well have being going onwards.
