Quick question. If you are PS and have a QC membership with six months to run, then hit SG (which gives you complimentary QC membership) Is the QC membership extended by 12 months or effectively only six months? e.g. PS holding QC membership expiring 30 Dec 13 hits SG on 30 June 13. Does the QC membership expire on 30 June 14 or 30 Dec 14?

The Qantas Club membership that is paid for goes on old until your complimentary membership runs out then it resumes, I have four months on hold that I had left from 1997, tried to get a refund but they need the card details which after 16 years I dont have, so it will be there forever!

I believe it just goes "on hold" so if/when your SG expires, you'll then have the remaining balance of your QC membership to run. So in your example it would be the 30 Dec 14.

On a side note, I decided to take up the offer. Looking forward to maybe meeting some people in the QP.

Thanks Markis & Edge

I haven't done much travelling in the last couple of years so went back to NB, but have several trips coming up in the next three months which will take me from 0 SC to 570SC. One JASA run and I should hit SG if I don't have another work trip on the horizon, so I took up the current offer to get me through the next few months.

Cheers

Sounds like a wise investment at that price :)

Looking forward to seeing you more often. :)

Great to see the over-crowding issue has been sorted and they can have a sale to re-fill the lounges
</sarcasm>

I really don't get why people would actually pay for it these days. Now that BA are going, it's AA and QF. If you're doing a bit of travel through the USA it's good value, but if you're only going once a year the $99 30 days Admirals club pass is probably a safer bet (even though QP membership gives premium drink chits).

Have Qantas solved their over-crowded lounge issues?

The lounges have looked less busy recently....

i thought it wasnt a bad deal a bought one as a present, thanks for posting it.

while you might not see why someone would pay for it, i cannot see why someone would fly Virgin, each to his own.

I'd say the same for any paid-for lounge scheme. If you're travelling that much, I still think you'd have the status to have lounge access (and yes, I had paid QP membership for quite some time for my 3-4 transcon flights a year I would have and that was a corporate scheme I had with a previous employer).

I can't see why people would fly QF either so we're in the opposite boats ;)

The status argument you put forward depends, however. The bulk of my flights are red e-deals between Canberra and Sydney or Melbourne. Each of these legs earns 10 status credits. To gain lounge access on status I would need to do 70 of these legs a year (35 return journeys) - Totalling $9,730 (at the standard fare of $139.00 one way).

For most people, 26 return legs a year would be considered "frequent flying" (once a fortnight) - yet I would not attain gold. At the discount price of $470 and fortnightly return flights, I would be accessing a lounge 52 times a year at a per entry cost of $9.04.

For this example, and many others, it is much, much better value than doing status runs to obtain gold. I realise we all have different flying schedules and travel in different classes - so I think to make a blanket call that paying for lounge access is terrible value does not take into account the vast range of individual situations.

Cheers.

-edit- And I realise that you can get to gold cheaper than $10,000 through status runs, but this would still likely cost at least 2k or more, or a lot of points.

Your points are entirely valid yes. Obviously those ploughing that route in discount Y is going to be the worst example but yes, it's a frequent one.

Based on earning 520 SC's just from that though, it shouldn't be much effort (with a little planning) to top that up to 700 once off. Then, it's just 80 more per year to get (PER trip and a holiday?).

For those regular folk unlike us it's probably worth it, but careful consideration can increase status credit earn with minimal effort/financial outlay, when you're flying that often.

And in your case, $470 would be a nice tax deduction too :)

Agreed.

On a side note. They really need to extend the lounge arrangements with Emirates since losing the British Airways arrangements. It is a bit of an oversight that there is no lounge access through Qantas Club in places like Paris, Rome etc etc when Qantas now markets tickets to these destinations. Surely it couldn't be that difficult to sort out (although, I am basing this on the assumption that Emirates has lounges through most of Europe?)

I paid for my membership 3 days ago and it still hasn't come off my credit card... my profile shows Qantas Club so not sure whether I should call or just chill....

Well, Mum has always wanted to be a member and this sale came at the perfect time, as Dad got it for her birthday today.

I personally don't see the value but hopefully she does! It does make it an easy birthday present each year if she enjoys it, just renew the QP membership :P

Add QF flights as gifts for Christmas, Mother's Day, etc so she can make use of it?
