Is it possible to do a status run for SG for cheaper than the $485 per year for QP membership?

If so why would anyone buy QP membership rather than go for status?

I highly doubt that you'd be able to find a run for 650SC's for anything near $485. Because if that was the case I'd be looking at runs to take me to P1 for nothing more than a couple of thousand.

EDIT: I'll change my answer, yes it would probably be possible using JASA's / FASA's, but it would also cost a fair few points.

Even with the sales the SC per dollar is around 3-4 if you're lucky so i guess a Gold run would be at least $2K, so i guess you wouldn't even get close.

I doubt it can be done, but knowing this lot, someone is bound to have a trick up their sleeve...

First hurdle is the four eligible QF flights you need to attain/retain status. Forget SCs, without those four tildes you get nowhere.

The QF website is showing some fares from $89. Get four of those and you've got your qualifying flights, plus 40SC. Just need 610SC for $129. A snap, really.

Qantas allow using only points for a QP membership but it is in the hundreds of thousands of points which would be in-proportionate to the value of a QP membership, especially since you cant use OW lounges abroad.

If it makes ya feel any better, at least a corporate membership to the Qantas pub *cough 'zoo'* is tax deductible depending on how adventurous your accountant is.

If you're talking a re-qualification (600 SC's) for $485, it's impossible. You're talking around 80c per SC and the requirement for at least 4 QF segments. Even if it's the initial joining of QP (with the huge sign up fee) it's still not really going to happen.

You can get SC's for around $1 per SC with a lot of effort, but that's in the USA only. The only other way is to burn a butt-load of points, which even at 1c per point (assumed acquisition value) it's going to be well over $485.

Last time I checked it's 75,000 points, very much so not worth it.

You may want to retry your maths there... Even stock standard red-e-deals SYD-MEL can get you down to 7c per SC...

I think you may need to redo your math buddy. 7 cents per SC.. Tell him he's dreamin

Sorry, I was basing that off one of those $79 fares (so technically 7.9c per SC) but just looking at the current options, it's more like 10.9c per SC. Still far short of a $1 per SC... -> I should have probably also put a few of these things -> in my original post to show I was more teasing and that I realised $1 was probably a typo...

er, 10SC for $79? I think that might not be 7.9c/SC.......

 -> Your right, ignore everything I just said. For some reason I was thinking about points not SC's... I personally blame a long day at work...

Its OK, we all make mistakes. That's what drugs and alcamahol are for *can't find delirious drugged out emoticon, sorry*

Whilst interesting I think your basic premise may be flawed. A status run to get to SG on top of the flying we do already may well be much cheaper that forking out money for the QP. If the only point was to get to SG for QP access, when would you be using that access apart from doing your status run (which would be in J anyway for the most part to get enough SC and give you that access at the time)?

In summary. Why? Huh? But interesting to think about nonetheless.

Hot dam! We were almost there with that 7.9c/SC.

The search continues. Let's perhaps readjust the challenge as suggested above.

Assume that a flyer earns enough SC in a regular year to make PS, including those four QF flights.

Is it easier/cheaper to get the remaining SC to attain SG than to fork out the money to buy QP membership?

That's easy if you happen to be in the USA as a part of your PS SCs. If you're not planning on leaving the country I'm going to say that it's pretty much impossible.
