Delays in BNE

But it can't be used at night because of a lack of lights? Aren't the delays usually in the evening when it's dark, especially as we get closer to winter?

I think you have been spending too much time at ZQN Sam, both runways are lit and in use at 10 PM last night:

RWY 19 FOR ARR. RWY 19 & 32 FOR DEP. TMP: 21. WIND: 220/6KTS. EXP INSTRUMENT APCH. TWY ALPHA 7 NOT AVBL. RWY DAMP. WX: SH IN AREA.
9:50pm - 24 Mar 13

I haven't been there for too long :(

But was under the impression the cross runway couldn't be used at night. Glad to hear that's not the case and with it open again, less delays (at least for me in my Q400's) :p

Correct, not suitable for night use and closed, which are peak times.

Not correct, as I posted in use at 10 last night, it's lit and available but lacks high intensity approach lighting and ILS. With the main runway US overnight it is in fact the only option, ie 1 AM this morning:

@ybbnatis: RWY 14. TWY ALPHA 7 NOT AVBL. RUNWAY 01 & RUNWAY 19 NOT AVBL, EXCEPT AS PER NOTAM. RWY WET. WIND: 190/8. CLD: FEW010. EXP INSTRUMENT APCH.

Therefore cannot be used in poor weather and is in limited use at night.

More fun to come it seems...
More disruption is expected as Brisbane Airport's main runway will close for repairs every night for a month | The Courier-Mail

Dont believe everything you read, the ATIS posted above clearly shows weather to be poor yet 14 in use, these days you don't need an ILS to make a precision approach, in that respect 14 is adequate. The major airlines have adjusted their schedules to make sure their bases are covered given the heavies cannot use 14 but otherwise it's no news, there will not be the delays to the extent as when 14 was US.

The runway is perfectly suitable for night ops, however the powers that be have decided against using it for that (excluding take-off in the 32 direction).

If you have a look at the two runways their landing/take off paths cross. There was an incident a while ago where a light aircraft (A Cirrus I think... can't recall) conducted a missed approach, didn't follow the procedure correctly and ended up pointing at an aircraft using the main runway and infringing separation standards. It was (unjustly) decided after that to stop operations after dark.

It's very frustrating as the frequent Dash 8 and ATR operators could make good use of the runway at all hours and reduce the strain on the airport as a whole. Why every operator is being punished due to the non-compliance of one private aircraft is anyones guess...

Interesting info.

Is it also possible BAC is restricting ops to try to twist the wrist of the airlines (or more specifically us as the travelling public) that refuse to pre-pay for the parallel runway?

It all seems a little dodgy to me.

Its not a BAC issue, it's ATC related and to do with worst case scenarios, as an ex ATC I know that if something might happen, it usually does, and you need to be prepared.

It was a CASA decision (BAC have no control over that). Not sure if Air Services had anything to say about it.

ASA and Airlines were both in on the decision. Basically only RPT are eligible for Converging Runway operations now (when being conducted).

The 2 main issues at night are the lowest safe altitude on the missed approach and the lack of azimuth visual cues to judge the actual position of aircraft, it's very difficult at night to judge how far away an aircraft is. This is also relevant for the decision to line up and depart aircraft off Runway 01 vs an arrival to Runway 14. It was decided with the amount of traffic it was too much risk.

Runway 14 has VOR and RNAVZ approaches, Runway 32 an RNAVZ only, minima around the 600-750'.

Woah, all of the red eye flights to Asia (CX to HKG, SQ to SIN, EK to SIN, MH to KUL, CI to TPE and potentially BR to TPE) are going to be rescheduled? I don't think it's possible to do any red eye flights to Asia if they don't leave from 11pm-ish to 5am :O AFAIK, those are all pretty full flights - surprised this hasn't been publicised more...

There would have been done nice delays on Sun evening, my VA flight got in by 20 mins before the storm closed the airport. We passed it over Gold Coast - thanks to having a Medical Emergency onboard, ATC brought us in fast and first. Had we not had the ME, we'd have been circling OOL or perhaps turned back to SYD.

The joys of having increased traffic into BNE is a commensurate increase in delays.

Is there a reason the 32 isnt used more then for departures of 738/320s etc (when wind conditions acceptable - presumably most afternoons /evenings)? it would surely free up the main rwy for more arrivals.

Taxiways D, E, F1 and F2 (at least one of which is needed to use runway 32) are limited to aircraft with a max weight of 56,000kg. So it does not matter what the wind conditions may be, any aircraft exceeding that weight are not going onto those taxiways and hence not going onto runway 32/14.

So a 738 can't use it then? I thought there was evidence to the contrary earlier this thread.

Upgrading a taxiway is cheaper and faster than a whole new runway.....
