My tourist friend ripped off in Sydney

My haircut costs ~$2.50 and I tip 25%. ;) Went up ~15% recently so the tip has decreased. :p

Baht, baht ;), that's cheap. I'm guessing no happy ending though.

I pay $15 for a hair cut and beard trim here in Australia.

I am happy I only paid 100 baht for the haircut. She is quite happy she had another customer pay 80 baht for the haircut and give her a 20 baht tip. So happy endings all round. ;)

Seriously though she is a very attractive 44 year old who is working hard trying to get her son through University with very little time for herself.

I've paid (recently) various ranging prices for styled haircuts*:

London = $55 ( inclusive of champagne)
Switzerland. $55 minimum price
Singapore. $40 ( senior stylist )
Melbourne $60 ( Toorak)
Philippines. $5 - 15 (province > Manila)
Gold Coast. $30 ( My favourite Stylist)

Prices equated in AUD.
(excluding well deserved gratuities)

* The only 'happy ending" for all of the above was my shortened hair & a more styled demure.

These are all well respected salons which included shampoo, blow-dry, hot towel, & head massage with qualified hairdressers.

I still cannot fathom how some rogue could possibly attempt to fleece a male of $110 for a simple trim:
without any happy ending

I duly hope Hayden is still playing 'Sherlock" on this case..

Hmm - my haircut is either $20 at my old barber (which is a hassle to get to) or now $49 at Grand Royal Barbers in Sydney - one of only three places in the world where I have found I can get a simple hair cut done consistently well.

As mentioned in an earlier reply, I had a very similar if not exactly the same experience at a hairdresser in DARLING HARBOUR shopping centre. Asian guy working by himself, dirty salon.... And he tried to grossly overcharge me. I'd be 99% sure it's the same guy.

One question, why didn't the OP's friend check the price prior to the haircut? It sounds easy now but I always get the price in a form I understand prior to commencing a transaction.

the 460 dollar sounds very rough!

might go and have a look during my lunch break tomorrow :D

Enquire about the $110 mens trim 'special" .. Do they have a menu? Do we have to book? Can we pay by card? Are they in the QFF program?

For those who may be interested, I sent a brief email to Harbourside management in order to bring the issue with this particular tenant to their attention. I received this response:

"Dear Mattg,
We appreciate the time you took to write to us.

Please be advised we are raising this issue with the relevant tenant and in no way do we condone this type of behaviour or practise."

Had a wander around the harbourside shopping centre the other day but couldn't find the place I reckon, only saw 2 hairdressers but they had advertised prices, offcourse by the time I got there I had forgotten the address...

You asked about other tourist rip-offs. One not uncommon one in Cairns was for a restaurant to have the foreign language menu with higher prices. Not that they aren't astronomical here anyway. This "bonus" went in part to the tour guide who recommended the establishment. That is a while ago and don't know if it still happens. Really damaging to the tourism industry that one.

I know a restaurant in sydney that has the cheap options in mandarin and the expensive prices in english.

Auxiliary fees for translation into English, perhaps? Wait... I thought the official language in Australia is English?
