Whatever the nasty downsides, and I am sure there were many, of Gore & Skase's activities, you have to acknowledge their vision and drive to create a few pieces of superb real estate out of scrub and mangroves.

Very true. I feel very, very sorry for the investors who lost (sometimes) their entire investments, but there are plenty of other factors to consider.

In Skase's case, he was one of the rare corporate raiders who didn't just strip a carcass, but built some very real and lasting benefits for the Qld economy. A corporate raider with vision. Yes he was greedy, but he also did well for Qld. If Skase didn't lose his nerve and flee, I believe he would have had a genuine case and the real villians were the lecherious liquidators who onsold assets for just a pittance. Skase's board room table was sold to Stefan for $2000. It was worth so much more than that and Stefan then cut it up into pieces and placed one piece in each of his salons. I only heard of the auction after the fact although I had registered interest with the liquidators and was waiting for it (I would have paid 5 times the Stefen amount and it'd still be the prized table it was rather than a collection of blow-dryer tables for a hairdressing chain). IIRC, that table cost Skase over $30000.

Skase, Bond, Williams, Gore all made mistakes, but failure mode effect analysis' usually only go to one or two levels. Those guys faced three simultaneous financial attacks on their businesses, including the 1989 Pilots strike. Some of their subsequent actions were deplorable, but they were not the sole instigators of the calamitous losses suffered by many. Those were dark tmes for Australia, which I personally hope never to see again.

I checked the website and note that ICH is still pursuing that greedy little grab for cash ie charging $25ish for wifi; a subject well discussed (and universally loathed) by us FF'ers in other threads

Its free for RAs!

You might pour some white vinegar over it afterwards - to take some of the sting away ...

Any updates on any changes since IHG took over? Any "refresh" work? By all reports the resort was looking a little tired in the last days of Hilton ownership.

Can anyone help me - are the pools suitable for children ie. a shallow "play" section or all full swimming pools?

They are doing a fair bit of renovation work at present, so its ongoing after leaving the Hyatt chain.
While the main pool is not suitable for small children the lagoon pool is a favorite with my 4 year old.

Sounds good. Albeit it's on the GC so there's heaps to do outside the hotel, how many days until your 4yo got bored with the hotel grounds?

Hopefully the renovations get finished sooner rather than later. Did you find them particularly disruptive?

Have not noticed any disruptions, they are doing them a block at a time and generally the block is not sold during that time.

Can somebody tell me if this is how Sanctuary Cove are doing things ...

Booked a PP BOGO a few months ago, at $249. for Garden View Room. Two nights - that is, pay $249. for first night, and second night is free. Usual story, isn't it ?

Checking in next week, and looked up my booking ( logged in as Member ), and being RA, I expected to see an upgrade.

Well, I got the upgrade to Club Marina view .... but they also increased the price from $249. to $399. !!!

Is this what others have found ( those who are RAs ) ??

Should I be asking for the original $249. for the two nights on check in ??

I have found that they will modify the booking to show your upgrade and they will change the amount of people upwards and then show your rate as being for 3 people. Check, and go back in change booking back to 2 people. Otherwise turn up with your confirmation which you should have printed out when yo made the booking. I have learnt that you have to do this

SC is an "interesting" place.
I enjoy revisiting developments , especially upmarket versions , to see how they age.
I have my boat moored there atm , the marina is pretty tired and the village appears... stressed...
They seem to be trying tho' and the original ambience remains, albeit with a some patina that needs a scrub.
Pity really , as it was truly an icon of the 80's.. let's hope it enjoys a nice rebirth.

I guess Mulpha (the owners) are making a motza out of selling the overpriced blue board cookie cutter villas tho.

I guess not everyone can live in the penthouses, so the "multitudes" have to populate the support apparatus.
It's interesting to rock in at different times and observe who is out and about.
Can't go past Georges for a feed tho... maybe I should do a review ... :)

Agreed.. Ioesco is also a good choice for authentic Italian at Sanctuary Cove Village

George is a very real person tho.. saw him t'other day.. very Greek ...runs a tight ship... they were checking stuff out.. along with a tribe of helpers.. drives a little benz

Got an email back from SC reservations ...

They tell me, I had two reservations: First one is what I booked ( all details correct ).

Second one, is at the full Club Marina rate of $399. ( at the time ? ). Reservations say, that it was booked on a PP BOGO, and given it was made second to my original booking, it updated on the system, so that's what I could see on my bookings profile.

Point is, I don't recall doing it. In fact, I know ... I would not have booked at $399. so I'm almost certain, it wasn't me who made this booking.

They offered to cancel the unwanted booking, so no issue ...

All those strange reports you see on the FT pages .... ????

They got back to me to say, that they have had a few 'booking problems'.
My original booking restored, at the original price - so all good ...

looking forward to 'being there' tomorrow !
