Hello!

Just wanted to disprove the theory of saving on staff costs, you have to remember staff costs are basically fixed and don't really change through out the year. The roster for these staff has already been published and there are no changes in time or the amount of staff rostered (there are actully more staff due to the holiday period not having much leave avail for staff to choose from).

Also there are no casual ground staff either.

Still one staff member in the SYD J lounge has told me they're on leave for a few weeks from the 22nd.

If there is no change to rosters what are the staff going to do whilst the lounge is closed?

I'm sorry but past over promises and under-deliveries from QF have made us all cynics.

IMO it's being done to cut costs and devalues their J product over that time period. I'm certainly annoyed to be travelling J on Boxing Day and not have J lounge access (at SYD fwiw).

It probably has a lot to do with wanting to give as many staff as possible a christmas break. The J lounge won't be as utilised over the Christmas break thanks to quite a few companies having shutdown periods, therefore they can close the JLounge down over this time, still leaving a perfectly acceptable lounge option still open, and then use the JLounge staff to cover other aspects of the business (for which they are trained) whilst other staff are away.

It to me seems to be a smart way of getting employees onside, and with only a little bit of an inconvenience to their customers.

Many would be, but I do know the staff rotate between lounges too, so while some may take leave a lot won't either.. I'll ask on Saturday if they are making changes in the lounge while it is closed..

When did GOLD gain access to Jlounges?

Sounds like a re-fit is in the offering......I'm thinking this is a positive enhancement!

"Positive enhancement"?

Now there's an oxymoron if ever there was one.

SG has access to international J lounges. Sadly restricted to QP when flying domestically. :-(

I would state that the international J lounge is equivalent to the QP domestically.

Correct, however there is no QP in the Int ports........directing the SG from the J Int lounges to the QP will probably see them staring at the bottles on the duty free shelves:D

Just to put a positive slant on this thread, it has again shown the value of information sharing on AFF. I will be flying out of Sydney on the 1st Jan and now I know just to go to the QP. The reason for closure to me is irrelevant but I'm forewarned so thanks to the OP.

Which is great work from QF that we find out on AFF and not from QF.....

I loathe the "why can't I access the J lounge" debate, regardless of what the lounge is called, it's a 2-lounge strategy.

Sapphire = bottom lounge, while Emerald = top lounge. Not hard to grasp.

I wonder if the CLs will close too?

No they close them when parliament is in session ;)

You'd think an email to all affected J pax, and WP's would be in order.

Well it is on the website but not very prominently:

Eligibility and Access to The Qantas Club Lounges | Qantas
Note: From 26 December 2012 to 6 January 2013, our Business Lounges in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra will be closed for routine maintenance. During this time, our Platinum One, Platinum and Gold Frequent Flyers are invited to use our Qantas Clubs.

There are casual staff that will be affected by this closure. I have spoken to the catering staff at CBR previously and many of them are students who would normally use this time of year to do as many hours as possible to save money for the year ahead.

I've been told that all the staff in SYD T3 J lounge are casual, except one (who gets many mentions on AFF). Perhaps some of them will get some hours in the QP.

Bummer. Was planning on being in the BNE Dom J Lounge on 27/12. Guess the F Lounge in SYD will have to help us overcome our disappointment. Little Miss 6 has probably forgotten what the BNE QP looks like, so time for a reminder of where she'd go if she wasn't travelling with Mummy. ;) :p

Ummm... if she wasn't travelling with Mummy.... then she wouldn't be in a lounge. You should "educate" her by taking her around the food court and the gate area. :D

Unless, of course, M is already a bona fide Gold (or PG).... You may need to take her to the SYD T1 J Lounge then to give her a further "education"... ;)
