A new level of weird - random perfume attack

Sitting happily in 1b on the Perth -BNE flight last night. Dinner finished, chatting to the pax next to me when I felt a 'squirt' on the back of the head. Turned to see the guy in 2a with a small perfume bottle in his hand muttering something along the lines of 'that'll help you with the ladies.'

Man, I stank....

I had had absolutely zero interaction with this person, was not being loud and hadn't even turned round prior to this.

The person next to me was off-duty crew and had never heard or seen of anything like this before. We discussed what to do and agreed that a quiet word with the CSM was the best approach.

I went up front and reported it (the staff did complement me on the scent though...). While doing so the person sitting next to the sprayer came through to report that the guy was freaking him out too. Hopefully, QF have marked his card for future travel.

I had fun explaining to my wife why I arrived home stinking of perfume....'oh yeah? some random guy sprayed you? pull the other one....'

I've had someones bottle of perfume leaked all over my coat up in the overhead locker once before (that was an interesting one to explain as well), but I've never heard someone deliberately spraying someone else like that... I personally hope 2B gets put onto a "no fly list" as that is absolutely down right rude...

That's bizarre. If it were me, I would let it go, but you could email QF. Had it been a different pax, it could have turned to fisticuffs.

If it wasn't on a plane my reaction would have been much more robust. It was close to assualt....what if it had gone in my eye?

Nutters everywhere! I dare say with at least 2 pax registering their wariness about his odd behaviour, there should have been at least a 'caution' flag placed on his file - or one would hope so.

I believe in Oz this is criminal assault, it is in some other countries (thanks Google). If you did have an allergic reaction and died, then QF would be liable and the guy would be charged with manslaughter.

So next time you are randomly sprayed you could just fall out of the seat clutching your chest and scare the living sh^&t out of the creep. However this may be more difficult in Y, so I recommend all future travel in F and J.

Obviously it is on the lower scale for an assault, but it may well be deemed an assault (along the lines that spraying water on someone *can* be an assault)

I hope you showered, obviously being a sandwich short of a picnic it would very possible that he also mixed some of his own "bodily fluids" into the container with it.

There is a legal concept that requires a provider who has a closed environment to provide safe refuge for their guests, I don't think it's applicable in Australia at this stage but there is a movement to make it apply for premises where alcohol is supplied, which would mean aircraft get included in the net.

Qantas also has a duty to protect the safety of its aircraft and its passengers, so there would be scope under the relevant CARs in that respect, which is why the crew are given the powers of arrest normally associated with a constable of the law.

I think that this elusive super-mega-VIP uses urine to mark his territory and not perfume. He did mention something about a wet seat in the Saphire shed...
