So, after 92 flights this year with exactly the same cabin bags (Samsonsite 4 wheeler and a small laptop backpack), I was taken to task by the FA before boarding ADL-MEL flight today. This was the first time I have been questioned in this run of some 200 flights between MEL and ADL.

I was first in line and she asked me to place my bag in the metal frame and explained to me that if my bag was 110cm then I was not supposed to have a second bag OR I should get another back at 105cm.

I came close to a DYKWIA moment but then I realised that I actually wasn't really important at all.

Is this a shift in policy or did I just land the baggage naz_? Or maybe it was the fact that the 737 is named after Cann River a one horse town that can't handle the extra 5cms....

Careful.

I saw three horses when I drove through there last week :!:

Seriously though.

Technically she is correct so you really have nothing to complain about. They have to draw a line in the sand and it appears that you are on the wrong side of the line and have been lucky until now.

tbh QF has a lot of trouble with cabin baggage, ppl blatantly ignore the rules and lug 2 and sometimes 3 large bags on then complain when all the bin space is gone.

this leads to a need to rush on early to secure bin space and subsequent woes around priority boarding.

im all for them policing the rules but think the 5cm rule is a little rich.

I copped similar at CBR last week. The gate agent queried the weight of my legitimate-dimensions roll-aboard and it came up at 10 Kg. OK, it was strictly over the limit but it was just a few shirts, a jacket, small toiletries pack, iPad and Kindle - enough for a two night stay in CBR. I challenge many people to stay below 7 Kg with a roll-aboard. The wheels and frame of most of those things seem to be quite heavy.

He asked me if I had another bag to move some stuff to. When I said "no", he asked me to step aside and they found me a plastic bag. The younger FA assisting was embarrassed by the guy's officiousness and said he does it all the time.

I was boarding using my WP card and I was in 1A so he definitely wasn't cutting any slack for WP/Business class - or maybe that's why he did it . I saw plenty of people subsequently coming on and heading to the back with the usual collection of over-size cases.

It's the first time it's happened to me.

And Virgin is getting just as bad. Someone with 3 large bags tonight, well 2 and a box. Got a look from the FA but no words were said.

Virgin weighed my cabin bags in Perth on Monday... I had to swap things between bags to get them to be both 7kg ish.

How else would you suggest they draw the line then :?:

If the limit was 150cm then someone would complain if they had 155cm.

Personally - my rollaboard is 45in. I'm only allowed 1 carry on - yet someone can take 2 x 40in rollaboards.

If I put my rollaboard above and my soft backpack under the seat - I'm less of an inconvenience than the person with 2 rollaboards - but the rules don't see it that way.

I agree but I'm inviting people to offer a better option :!:

They may have been mingling/socialising with the Tiger Airways crew recently

So to put this into perspective my laptop bag is that thin that it fits on top of my roll-aboard. So I am not one of those folk who have a laptop bag that resembles what a Sherpa might be expected to lug to base camp.

I also liked the comment that I have been lucky on the 199 flights where I haven't been stopped. I might keep riding my luck.... the odds seem to be with me.

Plus, for good measure, I take the tiny little overhead space above row 4. Mr Considerate, that's me.

I too witnesses FA tell a passenger in front of me she had too many carry on (small carry on, handbag, satchel) it was a Saturday night flight Syd/Mel, I felt bad as I walked on with back pack, handbag and duty free and FA did not say a thing. Lucky I guess!

I admit I haven't measured my carry on but I'm quite sure it fits within regulations. I also take an Adidas satchel/laptop bag. Slim, fits right on top of my carry on, takes zero extra usable space. However for when I get a naz_, my laptop bag just fits in my carry on! Nice way to get away with it.

I support restricting items - my eyes were widened last week flying ADL-MEL. First time sitting close to the front in a 737, was in 4C. The amount of bags I saw go past me was just insane!

On a recent BA shorthaul fl saw a man (J) board last with 2 large bags: the larger must have been 150 cm wide and was 115 high so it took up almost all the overhead bin and the steward had to move other pax bags further back. It seemed really unfair that such a grossly oversize bag was allowed in.

I think there need to be well-defined, clearly stated size limits for carry on bags and these need to be the same for all (jet) aircraft regardless of carrier. I do not want a collection of bags so I can comply withthe chosen airline and do not want the hassles associated with code-shares and using different airlines on one trip.

I would also like some tolerance regarding handbags: we do not have lots of pockets in our clothes so need to be able to have a small handbag for phone, keys, money, cards, boarding pass etc.

New policy:

Straitman and dfcatch can carry on whatever they like!

(BR can too because he has the choccies)

Everybody else can have whatever they like as long as they don't use the overhead storage above us!!

THIS is where the problem here lies: I would be all in favor of enforcing the rules to the inch. The problem is inconsistency (oh really, how could it be, at Qantas? ;)): Either do it ALWAYS and put an end to those crazy "Monster backpack plus surfboard and three stuffed duty free bags" or "Overperfumed Wanna be Model chick with two fur coats, a laptop bag, three shopping bags from Chanel and Gucci AND a roller case" Why-classers OR let someone like the OP through with his 5 cm extra.

A consistent size would be nice. I have a carry on which is ok for most but not Virgin. So today for my weekend in Canberra, I will be checking the carry on size I previously took to Auckland for a weekend trip as carry on.

I would have thought weight was more of an issue due to safety - I don't want your 10 kg bag falling on my head.

With the exception of weekend trips my carry on is usually small enough to fit under the seat in front. That is so much easier.

And yes I am always in Y.

Get some training from Ryanair. All gate staff / FAs are well-trained to pull aside any large or heavy looking items at the gate for size bracket checks and weighing. There's always a nice pile up of pax near the gate waiting to have their bags checked, and others frantically repacking to make their bag fit in the sizing bracket.

FR takes no prisoners when it comes to cabin bags. None of this "personal items" stuff either - a laptop bag with even only just a laptop is another bag. So is a laptop in a sleeve outside a bag - you put it in a bag or it counts.

Such a system, however, ensures almost everyone is in compliance.

I had my hand luggage weighed twice at Brisbane international last week. Once by the check in lady at singapore arlines, who asked to weigh on the scales and again when going through security. it was only 7kg. i thought this was strange to have it weighed twice.
We had 10kg allowance each, Mrs bodie only had her handbag, and no cabin bag. i did some bags, strollers etc on the gangway to the plane, being checked in.
Coming back and i weighed bags to make sure we were right and it was 7.5kg. But at Changi, no weigh in on hand luggage.

Easy, if you have more than one bag, or it is likely to be oversized, check it into the hold. I have bags that I know fit the dimensions for dom or int travel, and if I am concerned about the weight - I weigh it!
