Considering how many DYKWIA there are on this site, I wonder if they have ever suspected hotel staff ever purposely downgraded them or did something to their room?

He said the wealthier the guests the more likely they were to be loudly and wildly abusive, while celebrities are often the worst of them all.
"A lot of people are watching Downton Abbey now, and they think, 'Oh, I’ve got servants, too!',” he said.
"Especially the affluent, they treat people as they never would otherwise. Meanwhile, hardworking people - who might be getting screwed - won’t say anything.
"It’s the people who have way more money who want everything now, and they want it for free."

hint: labelling the forum membership as DYKWIA is unlikely to encourage discussion on your otherwise banal subject matter :)

I am not labelling the all forum as DYKWIA's, but as a NB nobody it is sometimes fun poking the bears! ;)

Met many Affers here, and none would fit into the catergory of DYKWIA.

Well Jacob Tomsky sounds like a complete c**k. I do hope his book fails to sell any copies. Why would you continue to work in a service industry for 10 years when you obviously don't enjoy it?

As for the OP's comment regarding the number of DYKWIA and having fun poking he bears - kind of makes you lose credibility for your posts.

Well I typed a much longer response using my Android phone (with Chrome) and the AFF site wiped most of it. Not happy. I always have compatibility issues with this site.

Anyway what I did say was.......

I have a friend who works in hospitality and he said that they decide what room to put you in within 10 seconds of arriving because by that point they spot the DYKWIAs. They get the coughpy rooms next to the lift.

I also learned that staff get paid the same rate regardless of the star rating of the hotel. Needless to say he prefers to work in a 3 or 4 star hotel. He believes guests are much more down to earth and don't think they are better than anyone else.

I'm glad hotel staff stay in the industry and don't give up. Need them to bring people back to earth.

It's similar, I think, to flight attendents. Some people are so scathing about FAs and suggest they are there to serve us and do as they're told.

If that is so then I seem to have escaped the worst, then, since I have never got a room near the lift (very rare occasions, but then the property was not very big).

Even the last time I was at a Mercure in Auckland and I had to push for my 'rights' to privileges on my (very lacklustre) Le Club Accor Platinum, I still got a room on a high floor quite far from the lift (and with a view of the street).

I can't be comfortable treating someone like a serf. So I never do so with hotel staff.

The only privileges you get at the Mercure are bonus points.

Room upgrades and in hotel benefits are only at Sofitel, Pullman and mgallery.

So that's why I always get the room furthest from the lift.;)

Urgent call for Tony Hancock-I need some lessons.;)

I always try to treat all staff with respect and friendliness- it usually pays back in many ways.

However- if someone really pisses me off, then I can get very very nasty

...and what 'rights' are they exactly?

Suppose from hearing from the rest here, they were none in this case.

I probably only made the point because IIRC there is a note somewhere that upgrades will only be considered where applicable and on request only, which I find odd since most other programmes it's automatically given (or not at all).

That said, if I wasn't entitled to anything then to tie it back to the thread, my request should have likely met some sort of retribution.

I seem to always end up in Siberia in desperate need of a golf buggy!
Would be much happier closer to the lift!
