Do I chase down P1?

I would like to hear opinions from my AFF colleagues if I should go after P1 in my current membership year. I am currently in Rio for work on a RTW J trip and when I return at the end of Sept I will easily have over the 3600SCs required, but will fall short with about 2300SCs of the required 2700SCs for QF flights. My membership year end Oct 31, so I will only have 1 month to attain ~400SCs. I am based in Perth and travel mostly overseas in J (work policy is +7hrs), so my trips to Singapore are in Y. I have the requirement to travel to Bangkok for work in October and maybe off to UK again end Oct or early Nov. If I did travel to Bangkok and depart for the UK by end of Oct, I would be ~90SCs short of P1.

My history is 10 years at SG, with this my first year at WP and it would be nice to get to WP1 after all the travel done this year (just an ego thing). But really, is it worth it? After reading a few posts regarding the perceived benefits of P1 and the not so great reviews from our elite travellers/members, I am not sure. Would also be nice to have work pay for the travel to get to WP1, but maybe I have to dip into my pocket just once and get a JASA? So, over to you: should I go for it and if yes, how best to acheive the required SCs by end October.

Anything over 1200 SC is just a waste IMHO, crediting to AA offers better point earn/ burn for me.

I would chase for 90SCs especially if you are planning an overseas award in business as you should be able to get more J awards released.

I agree with markis10 that [added context not attributable to mark is10] once you hit LTG and if doing 4000 SCs of travel per year I would credit to AA once you retain WP.

90sc no brainer - go for it!
Given the travel I would assume you'd be [QFF] "Points Rich".

A one way PER-SYD/MEL JASA earns 80 SC's and would cost 36,000 QFF & ~$150 or ~50K.

Get the other 10 SC with a red e-deal the other way.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks guys for your response. For the record, only 50SCs were using the double SC promotion (yes I did get the promotion), as most of my trips were either booked before the July run or were after the promotion ended (for me anyway). Thanks Serfty, historically I am not pts rich and have earn/burn approach, but due to not having any spare time in Aus this year, I have earned ~400k this year, so I think a weekend away with Mrs H might be in order, before I take off again and upset the family.

I tend to agree with Markis10, but since I've already started the journey, I may see what can be acheived this membership year. Next year, I will start crediting other OW carrier programs, as I do travel a few times a year in US in both J and Y.

LOL. With double SC offers you can get it for 1800 SC's. The lack of any contact and real service may well be the result of too many P1's.

A lot of these DSC offers have been for short period - 2 - 3 months (yes I know some have been longer). The big one this year was three months plus an extra month for int'l only. Frankly if you manage to do 1,800 SCs of travel (1350 on QF metal) - I wouldnt begrudge you P1 status...

Sorry got to disagree there. The whole point, supposedly, is that P1 should be hard to reach, not three J returns MEL-LHR and a couple of YUPPS.

It's not easy to qualify for Platinum One benefits. To reach this new recognition level, in each membership year you need to earn a minimum of 3,600 Status credits*,with at least 2,700 earned on Qantas Marketed Flights^ where Status credits normally accrue.

We know when you fly as frequently as you do to reach Platinum One status, travel is so much more than just flying to a destination. It's the whole experience that makes your journey a pleasure. That's why Platinum One members are rewarded with the ultimate level of personalised service and receive additional benefits beyond those offered to other Frequent Flyers.

Three months of double SC's makes a mockery of P1 status. A well planned MEL-SIN-LHR netted 1120 SC's! I don't blame people for taking advantage of the offer, I certainly would, but it puts P1 somewhere below partner gold, or whatever it is called these days.

But if it devalues PG then surely PG is equally devalued? That is even easier to hit...

I am assuming the OP has hit LTS and is somewhere between LTS and LTG? I guess that is another thing the OP should also take into consideration. Perhaps also a star alliance program that offers lifetime status that they could work to.

Short of just 90 SCs, I'd go for it, although from most reports on here, the benefits are nothing to get excited about.

If enough of you buggers make P1 they will bring in a P2 :&

I think we'd more likely see Platinum 'enhanced' and benefits from that travelled moved up to Platinum One.

I really don't see many tangible benefits moving out of WP hands - there are a lot of WP and they would move en mass I think if for example F lounge access was restricted.

90SCs for P1?

Worth it for the advance seat selection options alone - pick any seat at any time in your cabin, international or domestic.

I will be WP at the end of the month and considered chasing P1 next year when my year runs out in January but I cannot justify it, the extras just don't appear to be that much.

If P1 included a certain amount of free upgrades to J it would be worth it but as it stands no way.

IMHO, if you're already travelling in work funded J, and have achieved WP after a long period of SG, why bother?

YMMV.
