Do I chase down P1?

I'd go for it. Although not necessarily for any benefit other than the better seat selection. A month after my qualifying flight my status has updated to P1 online, but I have not received the welcome phone call nor have I received my "platinum card with a bit of extra hard to read red writing on it" ... er, I mean Platinum One welcome pack. I'd go for it for the fact that it locks in an extra guaranteed year of WP if your flying happens to slow down a bit.

IMHO, if you're already travelling in work funded J, and have achieved WP after a long period of SG, why bother?

YMMV.

Worth chasing for 90sc even flying J - For me I like window and row 1 has easy access otherwise it's aisle seat in other rows - so the ability to select row 1 at booking and not have to wait till T80 is beneficial. Would I chase it next year if under 200sc yes.

P1 isn't all whizz bang, but I've found it worth having. I like the ability to 'release' award seats on otherwise busy flights. I liked the both leg upgrade to F recently. The bonus glass of J wine (not certain, but usual) when flying Y domestic is a nice touch.
The absolute killer benefit though is seat selection. I rarely, if ever, don't get to sit where I want. Given that I'm at the tail end of 7 week mega travel period that involves approx 160 hours in the air, this helps me retain sanity.

Hmm not had J wine yet in whY...

What sort of award release success have you had? I am wondering how successful I will be getting J awards to DXB next sep/oct...

I travelled in Y for the first time in a while last week (using up the Qantas freebie grounding flight) and was offered J wine.

Award release - 1 success for 1 attempt.
Having said that, I also set a U watch for the flight in Expert Flyer which triggered a week or so pre-flight so I cancelled the classic award and made it a JASA instead.

This seems to be the one thing P1s all agree is the "deal-maker" for P1.

Such a seemingly small thing...and yet so handy.

Agreed. It is handy when one can book a last minute flight and grab 4A/C/D/F on a 737 or 23 A/B/J/K on a 333. (I don't often fly domestically with QF but have been dragged kicking and screaming on a MEL-PER run this week by one of my employees chasing SG!! [What a tolerant, although insane, boss I am. :p We are returning with DJ though and I have popped the employee, and of course myself, into J with points!])

I think part of the problem is that some of the benefits are unpublished and are unlikely to be published. The empty seat next to me, even in J, has been most pleasant. I have experienced "J service" in Y. These are things that QF cannot really guarantee. I have also had the pleasure of a couple of op-ups to F, and I am very grateful for them. With all of the double SC P1's some of these benefits will be harder to come by. :(

The "improved" upgrade experience is better than previously and I have experienced it first hand....but in the greater scheme of things it is still a lottery and overall pretty poor.

The intent and concept were good. The delivery.....well as with most things QF does....is inconsistent.

My card - just as you describe it - has now arrived, some three weeks after the qualifying flight. But it did take two phone calls to QF. I think there must be an avalanche of new P1 members. :)

There was a Welcome phone call - but I missed it, and then sent a message saying that I didn't need another at this stage.

May be worth a phone call re your card? You may have already tried that, of course.

Has this been on int'l or dom flights and if dom - MEL-SYD or longer?

International - SYD-PVG-SYD....when I say J service it wasn't food!!! It was snacks and drinks, including champagne on boarding, and much appreciated. (Pyjamas too!) Also received drinks and snacks from the J cabin on MEL-AKL.

Other than seat selection, and one flight where catering was not assured I have seen no difference in service on domestic flights. (Primarily MEL-SYD-MEL for international connections...primarily to PVG which my UK colleagues fly to in Y....leaving me obliged to do likewise.)

I'm heading to PER tomorrow, Y, so it will be a good chance to see a) if priority boarding is enforced, and b) if there is any difference in service.

QUOTE ".... for the fact that it locks in an extra guaranteed year of WP if your flying happens to slow down a bit".

This is a good point if yr pts accrual could be come limited.

Seat selection has been very handy indeed - especially for those of us who earnt P1 with 90% DOM Y, although doesn't work so great on Q400s......

On board service DOM - varies significantly - from being ignored by the CSM (whilst they great the WPs sitting around me!) ... to being looked after with drinks and the like (although my experience is that it is very much crew / plane dependent - A330/747 crew tend to be the best here)

I've also had great service in getting award seats (DOM) opened up for family on difficult connections and/or busy flights ( tip: For award seats skip the Platinum Line - Email Platinum One)

Thanks for this - it will be interesting to see what happens on my SYD-WLG-MEL flights in whY...

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I am thinking that since I may not get this opportunity in the future, it is worth a shot. Even to open up more flights, seat choices, etc when/if required in future travel. I just hope that my UK trip at end of October does not fall into November, then I will have >250SC to obtain and that would be more difficult. Also hope that my maths add up, as the account summary does not add up your QF SCs (although easy enough to count in the account activity). For those interested, I will let you guys know how I go.

Sorry got to disagree there. The whole point, supposedly, is that P1 should be hard to reach, not three J returns MEL-LHR and a couple of YUPPS.
The whole point, supposedly, is that Platinum was once hard to reach....

Managed 2xJ + 2xY for kids to Tokyo last Christmas at peak time. Booked about 6 weeks in advance. Wife coming with me in J BNE to Europe and back this weekend over peak holiday period. This was booked about 3 months ago.
On both trips the P1/Premium sales teams were proactive and amazingly helpful.

Time for P1 plus++ ???
I'll hit 6000 by the end of this month without a double SC promotion.....I demand attention!!!!;)

Assuming you're talking about classic award - it's pretty easy to get to Europe in J (on other OW partners)....however, getting Tokyo flights is difficult as a WP.
