Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Looks like we are right royally stuffed out of Perth then unless they want to run a 747 up to DXB or they have something else up their sleeve.

No - a 330 can make the distance (both 332 and 333).

The 320's are operated by JQ;)

Just thought of an indirect benefit. If flights to SIN are retimed for more day time flights, then perhaps the new QF lounge opening hours will be extended back to 2011 hours. Then those on JQ/3K flights in the morning can once again have lounge access :)

On another note. Why do we need to ditch the ref to 'kangaroo' route. It is still a stop (ala hop) to get to LHR, except the long/short segments have been reversed. Perhaps the 'Skip' route lol.

I have read the whole 92 pages, but haven’t found the answer to either of my questions.

  • Can I transfer my Skywards points to my QFF program?

  • Can I still fly QF from PER -> SIN

The PER -> DXB leg is too long for me. In the past, I have travelled PER -> SIN -> DXB -> a European port, with stopovers in SIN and DXB. Four days flying but no ill-effects and no jetlag.

Exactly! This is a kangaroo route!

I wondered if (using MEL-SIN as example) we'll see QF timing that matches the current JQ flight timing a late morning departure, returning mid evening back to AUS, and JQ flight moved to provide a direct connection from PEK instead of 12 hours or so in SIN , arriving back in MEL in the evening.

No - you can't transfer points between the programs.

The indications are QF will still fly to SIN, but with possibly improved times.

Exactly! This is a kangaroo route!

Heavens! The Kangaroo Route has gone via the Middle East before:
From 1959 Qantas introduced Boeing 707s to the Kangaroo Route, and in 1971 added Boeing 747s. These aircraft cut the time required to travel from Europe and Australia, as well as the number of stopovers (from the late 1970s flights would typically travel via Singapore and Bahrain). Fares dramatically fell in cost, opening air travel to more people, with Qantas subject to increasing competition on the Kangaroo Route by other carriers.[SUP][citation needed][/SUP]

Hence the name Kangaroo Route, right? :D If it were ever on a direct flight without the stops, then it wouldn't be a Kangaroo Route.

Surely QF 1/2/9/10 will be retimed now - is there any need to have aircraft sitting in LHR for 15-17 hours each day? Perhaps we could see daytime flights return London-Australia. This could potentially free up 1-2 aircraft for an increase in flights to North America.

Only if there's no headwind, and don't plan on having much reserves. Not quite viable, I think.

And funny enough, if you need/want to transit in Singapore, EK can get you there as well from MEL/BNE.

It seems that there are still missing pieces of the puzzle. QF intends to retime the HKG and SIN flight for better Asian connections. In HKG, there's KA, but for anyone connecting to KA, there's no reason for them not to be on CX for the first leg. And then from SIN... what exactly are pax connecting to? If they are taking Asia seriously, Jetstar is not going to cut it. It has its place in the market, but it's not exactly where you want to connect your premium pax to.

I'd imagine SIN would serve as a hub to India. I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of enhanced agreement with Jet Airways to cover more convenient connections into India - by 9W retiming their Mumbai and Chennai services.

Dont QF 1/9 arrive in the morning to the UK? that way people who have spent $10K can start work straight away?

Seems like the Kangaroo route passed through various Middle Eastern cities before that -
The Kangaroo Route was first flown by Qantas on 1 December 1947. A Lockheed Constellation ferried 29 passengers and 11 crew from Sydney to London, with stopovers in Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta(Kolkata), Karachi, Cairo and Tripoli (passengers would stay overnight in Singapore and Cairo). A return fare was £585, equivalent to 130 weeks average pay.[SUP][6][/SUP] Qantas changed the routing to variably include other interline stops, including Frankfurt, Zürich, Athens, Belgrade, Rome, Beirut, Tehran, Bombay and Colombo.

After reading all of that history I can't see any reason to change the name from the Kangaroo Route.

+1 The history is there!

EY allows Falcons to be transported to more destinations in the cabin.FalconsThe carriage of animals in the cabin is restricted to falcons only and is permitted on all types of aircraft subject to the following conditions:Diamond First ClassUp to 2 falcons per guest (per seat) are permitted. Charge for each falcon (which is considered 3 kg) is 3 times the normal excess baggage rate of the journey.Up to 2 additional falcons can be carried when an extra seat is purchased within same class. No excess baggage charges for the additional falcons will apply........................................................................................Or you could save money by sticking a piece of meat on the window and watch your falcon fly along side!!

wow...what a thread! halal, drugs and falcons...

If this partnership allows QF to getting the books back into the black than that can only be a positive. Lets face it, they are suffering from being stuck in one corner of the world, with an ageing and poorly invested fleet with a highly unionised workforce being paid well above competitors in Asia and the Middle East - (this is not a judgment on the unions - just a $ for $ comparison between QF and SQ/CX/TG/EK/EY et al)

If a tie up with EK means that QF can focus on flying in Asia with better scheduling and product than that can only be a positive. For those really wanting to transit SIN/HKG, then the OW options still exist anyway (BA/CX) - so what's the big deal. DXB allows for better options into Europe rather than the waste of a back-track from LHR.

Will be interesting to see where QP fits in amongst this. Obviously QF lounges are OK, as well as DXB T3. But nothing has been said about EK owned lounges (outside DXB), as well as guests.

I'm amazed at some of the xenophobic comments. Meat in an Islamic state being Halal? That's understandable. You'd be quite surprised by the amount of food in Australia that is Halal. Vegemite? Yes. Kit Kats? Yes. McDonalds? Yes(in some circumstances). If you're not Islamic, I don't see what the issue with halal is? Considering you don't believe in the justification for the process, how does it affect you anyway? It's still meat at the end of the day!

Just an observation - in JED there is no pig product sold. All you get is "bacon beef" which is inedible.

Don't you care about how those poor Vegemites and Kit Kats are slaughtered?

On the topic of the SIN flights retimings, given the SYD curfew, it's virtually impossible to operate night flights to SIN, so really, the only option is to have an 11am or midday flight, arriving into SIN at 5 - 6pm, making most of the later 3K connections. After which, the planes can depart for their return journey at around 8pm, arriving into SYD at approx 6am. In that sense, the opening hours of the SIN lounges don't need to be extended.

If they do indeed attempt to have a night flight ex-SYD, you would arrive at SIN at about 4am-ish - probably not the best way to start a day but for those travelling for work can get a full day of work in.

That was a cut and paste from the article, need to add quote marks.
LHR-DXB is band "B" - APD for a journey from the UK to UAE is £65 / £130.There is not that much of difference between £65 and £92, and in any case, both rates are still onerous.

Aside from a slight reference to 24 hours, it does not mention that those who simply transit DXB would pay the full rates.

See here:
It will give one way to avoid/reduce said tax but only with stopovers at DXB. i.e. APD at £184 for Premium Economy LHR-xDXB-SYD is the same as for LHR-xSIN-SYD or LHR-SIN. ...
See here:HM Revenue and Customs - Air Passenger Duty [2. Rates and structure of duty]
The amount due is dependent on the final destination and class of travel of the chargeable passenger.
...
APD shall be charged on the carriage of each chargeable passenger at the rate appropriate for the place where the passengers’ journey ends.
Journey means the journey from the passenger’s original place of departure to the final place of destination.

The original place of departure and the final place of destination mean the original place of departure and the final place of destination indicated on the ticket.
But:

  • where a journey includes two or more flights, and
  • any of those flights is not followed by a connected flight,
the journey ends where the first flight not followed by a connected flight ends.
