Hi all,

I have a flight booked on QF11, but I have to book a separate domestic connecting flight from PER - what are my options?

The best for me would be to take QF574 to SYD, arriving at 11:50 - would this be too tight to connect to QF11 at 13:05? If the flights are on different PNRs, will the bags be checked through or would I have to collect at SYD Dom, then check in separately? Would they give me both BPs in PER?

Another option is to take QF568 to SYD the previous night, arriving in SYD at 06:00. Again, if the flights are on different PNRs, would I be able to get the bags checked through?

The third option I was thinking is to take a DJ domestic flight to SYD - do they interline the baggage through to QF?

Another question I had was about baggage allowance - if all goes to plan, I will be SG for this trip, does my travel partner also receive additional baggage allowance (ie 2 pieces on domestic flight)? They do not currently have any status.

It seems like the baggage rules have changed somewhat since I last travelled to the US a few years back :(

Ring up Qantas, explain that you are travelling all the way with them, and they may be able to link the two PNRs together.

I haven't booked the domestic flight yet - was worried that I won't be able to check the baggage through, and if I take the later flight, I will definitely miss QF11 if I need to pick up baggage first...

I personally wouldn't chance that connection, it is very tight if you consider time to de-plane, transfer, go through immigration etc. The bags being checked though might happen as they are all QF flights, if you can get them onto the same PNR by ringing QF up, then they will definitely get checked through, and you should be able to get both BP's in PER.

Another option is to take QF568 to SYD the previous night, arriving in SYD at 06:00. Again, if the flights are on different PNRs, would I be able to get the bags checked through?

The red-eye is definitely the safer option, if on different PNR's it may not happen. AS QF have no way of knowing that you are connecting through.
The third option I was thinking is to take a DJ domestic flight to SYD - do they interline the baggage through to QF?
No. you will need to collect, then catch the train/bus (and pay for it) from Dom to Intl as neither DJ or QF will know you are transferring.

Another question I had was about baggage allowance - if all goes to plan, I will be SG for this trip, does my travel partner also receive additional baggage allowance (ie 2 pieces on domestic flight)? They do not currently have any status.

Baggage rules have recently changed, and the allowances will only apply to you.

That's a good point - forgot about SYD Dom and Int terminals not being connected!!

Will probably go with the red eye to be safe. Thanks for your help :)

Remember that linking the two bookings does not protect you if you misconnect.

QF->QF you will be able to interline on the two different bookings. Fairly sure you need to have your Itinerary for both flights for them to be able to do so.

Definitely, there's no way in the world I'd try to connect SYD Domestic to International in 1hr 15mins.

Just an update on this, as there were 2 nice surprises that I thought were interesting.

We were able to check in for the QF Int flight from the Dom terminal (after our DJ Dom flight), which let us catch the QF transfer bus! I didn't think this would be allowed according to the QF website, since our Dom leg was not on QF, but was pleased to save train/cab fare :)

I asked for the bags to be checked through to PER from LAX, even though the SYD-PER leg was on a different QF PNR. We were allowed the US baggage allowance on the domestic leg, which was very welcome. This was despite the fact that we had the domestic leg changed to an earlier flight, negating the interline of the baggage from LAX! As I read the QF website, the US baggage allowance only applies to the domestic leg where both are on the same PNR.

Thanks all for the advice here, definitely agree now that 1hr 15min for SYD Dom to Int would be a bit crazy :)

The rule actually states that domestic flights connecting to/from an international flight (both on QF) within 24 hours are allowed the international baggage allowance, on the domestic flight.

Well done, good outcome!

I originally thought that this might be the case, but the QF Website says:

QF Website said:
Domestic Travel is defined as travel not combined with any international flights on the same ticket.

QF Website said:
International Travel is defined as travel between two or more countries including any flights within those countries when they are combined with international travel on the same ticket.

I interpreted 'same ticket' as having the flights on the same PNR...

Baggage allowance being transferable for flights taking place within 24 hours does make sense though!
