Hong Kong Hotels

+2 for the Four Seasons which is one of the very best hotels I have ever stayed in.

If you want to stay on the island it's ideally located - adjacent to a large mall with lots of eateries and a supermarket, above the train station to the airport, a 3 minute walk to the ferries to Kowloon, a short walk through the mall to the metro rail station and a 10 minute walk to the Macau ferries.

The standard rooms are generously sized (especially for HKG) and the pool has marvelous views of the city and towards Kowloon. If you can get an option with breakfast they do a nice western and asian optioned breakfast buffet.

Once off plane grab an Octopus card to use while there, hand in at city bag drop and get portion not used back.

Have been to HK many times be back on 13th April, stayed at Prudential Hotel, Salisbury YMCA (both larger rooms for HK) and last couple trips The Kowloon Hotel club floor, the latter has small rooms but great near waterfront location (near Salisbury) has oodles of club floor benefits plus I meet friends staying there too.

We enjoyed the Intercontinental Grand Stamford. Good balance of location/price/amenity. Kowloon side.

If you need to stay on Hong Kong Island, the Cosmopolitan in Causeway Bay is a great hotel. Often the rooms are quite cheap because half of them look out over a cemetery, so chinese people wont buy them because of bad feng shui. But the hotel is well appointed and in a great location.

On Kowloon side, the Novotel in Jordan is pretty good. Modern, along Nathan Road, and i've always been upgraded. The Novotel in Wan Chai is a nice hotel, but the rooms are a bit older.

From an ex-HK resident :)

If you're here strictly for pleasure and for the first time I'd suggest staying on Hong Kong island in either Causeway Bay or Central - the standard of hotels is pretty good so it really comes down to your priorities in terms of facilities.
I second this thought process. Stay on HK Island rather than Kowloon. You can always visit Nathan Road if you really want to be accosted by the touts. I find the atmosphere around Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Central areas to be much more pleasant than on the "mainland". Plenty of markets (such as Bowrington Road Market or Jardine's Bazaar.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, I now have some research todo! :D

If budget is not really an issue then all of those 'five star' hotels will be great. Location is not much of an issue in HK because of their great metro, except for some lines which split and you need to change and transfer. In some cases at Kowloon it's faster and easier to catch a taxi than fuss with changing trains and doubling-back on your route. I think Kowloon is better for the nightlife and 'colour' compared to Central which is good of a day but at night you want to head to Causeway Bay for all the shops.

If you are there for a few days then get an 'Octopus' card, it can also be used to buy drinks and snacks at 7-11 shops, that's something we were supposed to have had in Sydney before the Olympics!

Any recommendations/experiences for Hong Kong hotels where you've used some kind of benefits through Amex? I really can't do the FS, Mandarin Oriental etc that run at around $500, but am wondering about the Langham Place for a slightly more reasonable treat...

Its my birthday while I'm in HK (in September) so am wanting somewhere nice but simply can't break the bank.

Another option is the Lanson Place which is part of the Small Luxury Hotels group so I will get breakfast, an upgrade (I'm thinking of sending a nice email kindly mentioning its my Birthday blah blah) and late check-out.

I'm leaning more towards the Lanson Place given the benefits and it seems to be pretty well priced.

Anyone have any experiences here?

The other option is to split the trip (I've got 8 nights to play with) and have a purely indulgent treat for a few nights and then somewhere nice, but a little less indulgent for the other nights.

I'd love to try to W Hong Kong but its so expensive!!

There is really more to do on Kowloon, central being a business centre which can be a bit sterile, and as mentioned by a previous poster you really need to get to Causeway Bay if you are staying at Central. W Hotel is at the Elements which is at Kowloon Station and it is not exactly convenient as it is on the airport line and not on the main MTR line.

To me I would rather stay at the Peninsula (surprised no one has mentioned it!!!) but you can't go wrong with the four seasons or the mandarin oriental on the Island. The key is to stay somewhere close to a MTR station, so the others 5* to consider are Sheraton at TST, and JW Mariott at Wan Chai.

For a taste of real Hong Kong where the locals are, Langham Place is fantastic, especially with club access. Often good deals on 3 nights or longer stays.
Royal Plaza is a lot cheaper but big rooms for Asian standards.
MTR below both these hotels also.

I just checked out of the Langham Place. It is a great Hotel and easy to get around from. Taxi from Kowloon station to the hotel isn't much at all, less than $10 from memory.

Also unlike the Kowloon hotels you don't get hassled when leaving for copy watches handbags or suits!

We always try to stay for a bit at the Peninsula (you're right, no one else here seems to be particularly fond of it) but spending a week there might be a bit much if you want to get out and about around HK. Then there's the cost (far better value for money around town) and the tower rooms are closed during the renovations this year so there's no prospect of a decent view. Absolutely spot on about being close to MTR though, but there's no shortage of hotels meeting that criterion.

I've had this happen a couple of time on the south end of Nathan Road, but found it very easy to avoid that area. Plenty of other things to see and do in TST.

We usually stay at the Royal Plaza hotel in Mongkok. It is directly above the Mongkok East station with direct access to Shenzhen and adjacent to a large shopping centre. Rooms are big and price can be very reasonable.

Rooms are indeed big at the Royal Plaza (and possible one of the nicest pools)..I love the fact there that train line underneath goes straight to LoWu for shopping!

Agreed, Royal Plaza is our choice when we stay in HK. Location is excellent!

+1 on this, Big rooms, price is very good and I for one like being in Mongkok. For me this is one area where you still feel like the old Hong Kong. There are some other very nice hotels but bang for buck this is hard to beat. Of course some like the amorphous hotel that could be anywhere.

I also really like the W as a more upmarket place.

I stayed at the Royal Plaza a few weeks back and be warned, that it's currently undergoing renovations until sometime next year. We were on the 9th floor, the highest before the floors that were being renovated, and from about 9am onwards there was a lot of noise coming from upstairs. The direct access into the mall was also blocked off.
