This should get some interesting comments, for the record on my last trip I saw a cyclist with a kitchen sink!

OVERHEAD luggage compartments are being dangerously overloaded as travellers avoid paying check-in fees to score the best deals on budget carriers. With checked baggage attracting increasingly higher charges, more passengers are opting to travel with just carry-on, creating a safety and logistics nightmare for crew.

“Everyone is trying to avoid paying to check in a bag by bringing everything with them onto the plane - including the kitchen sink,” Flight Attendants Association of Australia secretary Jo-Ann Davidson said. “It’s a serious problem.”

It's a news.com.au article

Say no more

But on the same note, sitting in the OOL gate area, it's interesting how comprehensive the JQ announcements are in relation to boarding and carry-on luggage....

Maybe the FA's need to be a little more strict with people. I recently saw some arrogant lady argue hard enough (i.e. not very) to get 4 carry on items aboard.

I'm personally not opposed to limiting carry on to personal items for in flight use only, and forcing everything else down into the hold.
Don't get me wrong, I love to travel HLO, but realistically I don't need 3 changes of clothes and the kitchen sink whilst on board, and my travel experience is not usually negatively affected by travelling with checked luggage.

Perhaps an expansion of the "premium hand luggage" service already offered for Dash 8 services, but across all plane types would be in order. The "hand luggage" is dropped down a slide at the door of the aircraft, and is brought out at the gate.

Just a thought

Not a very good thought at all.

Make sure you put all laptop/netbook/tablet/camera/cables and everything else in your luggage the next time you fly...

Also leave your checked luggage at the carousel, and assume it's gone missing and you won't get it back for 1-7 days

Then let me know how traveling without carry-on goes for you

All they need to do is regulate what is reasonable. And refuse to allow the large items to be carried on board. Like all things in life we never seem to find the middle ground but swing wildly from one extreme to another.

Been there, done that and for the most part it worked very well... (Well, minus the laptop, but I used it in flight)

It's just there is something to be said for walking from the plane to the kerb without having to stop at the carousel, which is why I do HLO most of the time when it's just me.

I thought there was a limit of 2 items for full service carriers and 1 item for LCCs. Enforce it, weigh it and ban rollerboards.

I know some people will not be happy but we can't keep everyone happy.

Why ban them? Because you can just about fit 3 of them in an overhead bin where 6 people are sitting. They are also totally inflexible and once they are in overhead bin nothing else can fit.

But hey. I see nothing wrong with one person bringing on board a rollaboard, a laptop bag, a handbag, an iPad. Do you think anything else would fit in the overhead bin?

Exactly. Enforcement from ALL carriers is required. I think the issue is when people take more than one bag in general, that is when it gets ridiculous and impractical to carry. That is the problem in the US - one bag, plus one personal item translates to two huge bags.

Carry ons will never be banned - you need to carry your valueables and tickets. If anything, I can see it eventually getting to a point where overhead compartments are eliminated and if you cant fit it under your seat, you have to check it.

I'm in two minds about this. I love the little High Sierra rollaboard that I've got and I use it pretty much always use when travelling domestically. But if I didn't have reliable priority boarding I'd probably fret about finding space for it, especially in the US. I also find it frustrating that when I have checked baggage I sometimes choose to board the aircraft later in the boarding process and then struggle to find overhead space for the (frankly, tiny) carry on that I have with me. But I can't blame them for trying to avoid the baggage charge. On a sale fare, adding baggage could be something like 20% more on top.

I honestly think that if the carriers (especially those in the US) eliminated the baggage charges a lot of people who are trying to haul massive amounts of carry on would choose to go back to checking the baggage. After all, those people that are bringing excessive carry on are the kind of people who will then cram a massive piece of luggage with 20 outfits for a weekend away and then complain to themselves that they can't take more!

There is, but have you ever seen it enforced? rarely.

And thats the point. Enforcement. Weight them, measure them, stick em in that fancy contraption thats at nearly every gate..

I've always stuck to the carry on limits - 7kgs each, yes 7kgs! Even bought a rollaboard carryon bag thats only 2.4kgs specifically for this - and have managed to go for a one week business trip with this and a small computer bag.

The only commom denominator that will work, is if they start policing it and start charging people for it.

MEL T2 weighed all carry on bags for a while there, I remeber once having do take my coat out of my bag and put it on before they let me through.

I've also had HL weighed in AKL when travelling HLO.

I certainly do not want to pay a premium on tickets to be forced to check luggage.

What on earth has weight got to do with it? If they are going to enforce the size limits fine - I just can not see the point in enforcing weight limits - BA have a 23KG limit - are QF's overhead bins not as strong?

On my overnighters, I can do one standard laptop bag and still get a fresh shirt AND gym gear in there as well (tip: Vibram Five-Finger shoes). If I have to take a roll-on carry-on-sized bag, I dispense with the laptop bag. It's just about making an effort. Harder for the girls, I accept that.

Well it is time it was enforced and see how we go. I don't think they will lose too much business enforcing carry on limits.

Simon you are one of the people I think about when these types of debates happen. I can easily fit 15kg each, carry it, lift it, into 2 separate bags when I am travelling. Do you think it is a good idea that I bring these onboard? I don't think so. I am one of the first people that wants to get out of there as quickly as possible but honestly waiting 10-15 minutes at luggage carousel is not going to kill me.

The day that luggage carousel delays happen regularly is the day I contemplate carry on only. And seriously I do not want to lug that rubbish in the lounge and all over the airport....

I am not sure of your intent JohnK, given you haven't actually seen the carryon I travel with so have no idea regarding the size of my luggage. Domestically I travel with a smallish rollaboard and a laptop bag that goes under the seat in front - in whY. Internationally I travel - in J - (if not travelling with dive gear) with the same rollaboard and a trifold suit bag that is significantly smaller than the regulation size.

It isn't the 10 - 15 mins at the carousel it is the 55 mins at the carousel waiting for bags that never arrive that concerns me. Followed by the three weeks in London waiting for bags to arrive and spending (insured) $2K on clothes to replace the missing clothes (note this seems a lot but two suits, business shoes and some undies mount up in the UK). That is my concern.

And something else that isn't about the 10 - 15 min wait for the carousel - what about the fact that my net luggage weight is significantly below either what I am allowed or the average pax - thus reducing my carbon footprint.

Looking at the past as well HOL lends itself to interesting and complex and good earning routings unlike going with checked luggage. I also don't have to worry about MCT as I know what I am carrying will travel with me.

Finally going through the airport - my rollaboard has my suit bag on top of it (threaded through the rollaboard handle) so has no real impact on my journey through the airport. I expect I am faster through security than the vast majority of people (I also actually get out of the way of people if I am slowing them down).

I assume you don't fly BA then given the risk of these little dangerous bundles in the overhead bins...

So overall:

- Lower carbon footprint
- No risk of lost/delayed luggage
- No burden on the insurance companies
- Less items in the hold meaning pax with checked luggage get their luggage faster
- Less checked luggage means less luggage handling which means cheaper air fares for everyone
- No fees for smartcartes or similar
- No being hassled to help lift my bags off the carousel
- No marijuan_ put into my bags by the small number of dodgy baggage handlers
- My camel suit doesn't get used by people that it shouldn't be
